Glock 17 Gen 3 - A review of the most widely used service pistols - is it right for civilians?

  • A Glock 17 is the hardly something new in the pistol world. This isn't even the most current version of the pistol. Did this pistol age well? Can the hype be believed?
The Glock 17 and the Beretta 92 basically both emerged on the American scene at about the same time frame, the Glock 17 championing striker fired actions and the 92 representing double/single actions. Due to Glock’s brilliant design of a highly functional product at a very attractive price point, law enforcement officers across the nation started trading in their 38’s for semi autos. But in the 30 years since it’s introduction is it still any good?
Now more than ever the Glock has very robust competition in the polymer service pistol market segment. Is the design still relevant? The design has been revised 4 times now, but none of the revisions would be considered disruptive. The pistol is clearly designed to a price point.
We take a look at how Austrian Perfection has aged. The pistol used is on loan from a friend and is a Glock 17 Gen 3 with a factory threaded barrel.

Glocks are work trucks. Not Lambo's. The reason 65% of the world's police forces use Glocks is because they want them to go bang and they do. Can't risk your life on a pretty gun that doesn't go bang.

I used to think that Glock pistols were overrated, but I have a lot more respect for them now. They're good weapons.

I've been saying for a couple yrs. The only glock I'd own is gen 3, 34. I found a very lightly used one for a very good price.
    I absolutely love the gun

I’ve got a stock Glock 17 Gen 3 for my general purpose carry pistol, and in that capacity it’s a great firearm. For fun at the range and target shooting, I love my HK USP9 Expert. It’s simply a delight to shoot.

My G-Block Gen3 23. Truly feels like a block, However, I do love it. The Trigger is actually not that bad after you polish it or shoot the hell out of it like I did.

You are 100% on the ergo's. When I bought my M&P I was actually in the store to buy a G19, but when I started handling them I found that my middle finger would not fit under the trigger guard in that little finger groove. Worked out ok though...I've since become an M&P fanboy. Thanks for another good video.

No, I've not shot one, but I got to fondle one at the Great American Outdoor Show. I don't like the new slide lock system, and I can't see how the few improvements did make is worth buying a whole new gun, not when I'm comfortable with mine. If I get another one it'll be the compact...I have a fullsize and shield right now.

Semi-auto pistols are reliable now because they all copied glock's design.

Interesting information, oddly enough I've been a Glock guy for a while and prefer the gen 3 models. On Memorial Day i purchased a CZ P10 C, and i shot better with this pistol than any Glock. I was planning on buying a gen 3 Glock 17 today, i was thinking because the length of the grip i wouldn't
Need to under cut the trigger guard. But after watching your video apparently thats a pipe dream. I hate modifications to my pistols. I'm all crapped out the fact that I'll still get Glock knuckle from the 17, i have large hands. I hope i got a good P10 the quality control isn't as reliable as a Glock pistol period.

So I've recently started competing with a G17g4 MOS in USPSA - I have managed to not get glock knuckle this go round and I've been training with it pretty extensively. I think it's going to be user to user dependent. The gun is not ergonomic - nowhere near what the P10 is. If they came out with a P10F that was optics ready - I'd probably go to that because I shoot the p10C so well - like zero getting to know you and I shoot them more accurately than my glocks. The later production P10c's seem to be doing better and don't forget each new glock generation seems to have it's kinks it has to work out as well.

Owned Glocks since late 90s & never hated the trigger but I can tell you that after several thousands rounds my Glock triggers are smooth as any polish job . Also not a fan of the serrated trigger on compact & subcompact Glocks so I swap out a G17 trigger when I can or Overwatch shoe.

Glocked 17 thanks for watching. I initially thought I was going to break one off in the Glock but getting behind it again - I just couldn't. The ethos are lousy, the sights are awful but the thing is fine. It just does what it's supposed to do!

TheHumbleMarksman, Makes me want to go shoot one. I want to shut myself in at the range with one Glock, and push myself to learn to shoot it better. I do like running close up stages and quick reloads with a G17. That's what I started out with, a G34. Take care.

+Practical Shooter I would be happy with a P01 omega honestly! Because my competition guns are double single I will probably keep my carry guns that way, but I would love to shoot one. I don't have a bunch of trigger time on the p320, only a couple magazines. Not enough experience either way to form an opinion. In hand they feel pretty good

  • @practicalshooter6517

My Sig P320 long slide (4.7" barrel) has such a high bore axis and so much mass, that it feels that I am waiting 30 minutes after the 1st shot, before the sights are back on target for the next shot. I don't really like that P320. I am wondering if the P320 compact is better in that regard, but now we are off topic.

Great video! I am wanting to get my 1st Glock. Do you think the Gen 3 is out of date? Should I go for the 4 or 5?

    • @TheHumbleMarksman
      @TheHumbleMarksman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

A gen 3 will still work- I would prefer a 4 because you have options with back straps but really I like 5s significantly more than both. I am competing with a g4 17 MOS and it’s been a fine pistol but I do prefer the feel of the gen 5s. I am going to try to shoot some GSSF next year and my goal will be winning a pair of 34g5s or a 17g5MOS if that’s a thing by then

+Elliott Butts depends on the application, carry/HD, absolutely. Competition, maybe not if you don't like it and feel like there could be something better. There is nothing wrong with the platform

Although I like the CZ because of my arthritis have great difficulty grabbing the slide. Although the Glock 17 is basically a plain bricks it's reliable and I can shoot it accurate and what matters most to me and everything else is secondary. You'll rather have a good looking gun that's a unreliable pos?
