The man is such a gift to society, because he tirelessly champions emotion, sincerity, and emotional authenticity over thinking, logic, and rationality. He knows how to bypass people's psychological defences, and get to the heart of those things we all try so hard to repress and suppress.
For me, the most magical moment of the event is the sound of all those children calling out to him mingled in with the strains of the theme song.

I'm well of aware of how fickle audiences can be at Cannes. Nonetheless, your comment comes across as needlessly judgmental and hypocritical. Here's what you implied:
1) Anybody who attends Cannes is automatically pretentious and stupid (likely in some cases, but a sweeping statement all the same);
2) Anybody who enjoys David Lynch's work in general is pretentious;
3) Anybody who enjoyed the new episodes of Twin Peaks - despite not really understanding them - is pretentious.
I, for one, didn't attend the Cannes premier, although I loved the first two episodes and felt like giving them a standing ovation myself. Having said that, I also didn't have a clue what I'd just seen. So I guess that makes me one pretentious motherfucker, doesn't it!?
P.S. You misspelled "Cannes" and "pretentious", which makes you sound like a dummy.

I remember seeing TP:FWWM at the cinema in London went it came out. I was about 19 at the time and I fucking loved the movie. I saw the movie at least 5 times in the cinema only to hear it had been booed at Cannes at some point. WTF? People are fucking idiots when they can't see the genius in front of them. They don't know whether to clap or boo or what til they're ordered to do so. Lemmings!! Thank god for us true fans who kept the dream alive so this day would finally arrive!!
@Chris X I love the Return too. When I heard that the whole season was directed by Lynch it seemed too good to be true. Fortunately it was true. Was so excited when it finally arrived. Basically I think us fans have been spoiled recently and I'd be happy to see a fourth season. 😀
