After hearing all the mixed reviews with the movie, I was shockingly disappointed with how much I landed on the “despise” side. Literally nothing in that movie felt “good” besides the animation to me 😅😅
The best way I can describe some of last year's animated movies is like a buffet. It has some stuff not everyone will enjoy but overall, there is some nice things to like.
Thank god you addressed the hell the animators went through during the production of across the spiderverse. Many reviewers push it aside and praise Lord + Miller while ignoring the abuse their animation team endured. The fact they kept releasing different versions in theaters with alterations that people kept trying to spin it as " Cool because it's like different universes haha! " when it's really just tedious and useless shit they should have fixed in the first place is very annoying. People in general just have little respect for animators. I really wish more people had sympathy towards them / critiqued the directors for treating them like shit.
I've seen an alarming amount of people who said "lol who cares" in response to the mistreatment. How soulless can these people be. We can have a good movie and good working conditions not one or the other.
For a comparison of productions Spider-Verse overworked employees through indecisive leadership of Lord & Miller Mutant Mayhem let their employees rest when they needed it, allowing work-from-home, and sometimes only working 3 days a week for needed time off. (Can we please operate all animation productions like Mutant Mayhem please?)
Despite how much a liked Across The Spiderverse (although compared to the last movie I thought it could’ve been better), hopefully for Beyond The Spiderverse Lord and Miller will actually treat the animators like people.
That begs the question, I wonder what the working conditions were like for the Lego Movie, after all, they put a ton of work into making the animation feel authentic to those old Lego animations + many other new techniques to circumvent the limitations at the time
@@cyberz55 Well considering the Lego movie was in development for 6 years compared to across the spiderverse which took around 3 I bet the working conditions were at least better. Honestly I have a strong suspicion that a lot of it comes from heavy crunch culture from Sony.
I feel like Ruby Gillman just needed to be longer, that might not have bumped the film into a smash hit but I think for the story it could have helped flesh things out better.
The Peasants uses its handpainted style to mimic popular styles from a cultural period in Poland know as "young poland" during which the book its adapting came out and I think they did a great job. Also several shots in the movie are direct references to known (at least in poland) paintings from said period and its pretty neat if you can pick up on them - rare advantage of being polish lmao
Top three animated movies for me this year. 1. Spiderverse(masterpiece nuff said) 2. Nimona( if spiderverse didnt come out this year this would be my favorite) 3. Tmnt( i do agree that the villains turning was rushed but this was my most rewatched film of the year and made me laugh a lot. Jeff rowe is an awesome director).
Omg thank you for bringing up the inflated expectations for Dreamworks by ppl online. I always loved Dreamworks and grew up watching the 2000s movies, and i always loved how different each movie could be. To treat Puss in Boots 2 like the beginning of a "Dreamworks Renaissance" or something ignores all of the amazing movies they've already made, and that their releases have always been inconsistent.
The only problem with making a good story for the mario movie is that Miyamoto will literally murder someone who tries to make the story more then a basic plot
While I agree that Ruby Gillman was hyped up too much, due to Puss in Boots The Last Wish, I don't feel like The Last Wish was some anomaly, where DreamWorks just threw mud at the wall, to see what stuck. It was a clear case of everyone sitting down and thinking about how they could actually create a story worth telling. We need more of that in the industry.
It was always going to come out after Elemental. Elio was always scheduled to be the film to come out after Inside Out 2 according its original release schedule.
Just too add a bit of nuanced my understanding is that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller especially the former where used as mouthpieces by the studio's higher ups but either way what happened was really messed up.

Can we at least agree 2023 was still a bad year for theatrical animation financially aside from Super Mario Bros. and Across the Spider Verse being adaptations, and now we're getting more sequels as opposed to originals in 2024 like Kung Fu Panda 4, Inside Out 2, and Despicable Me 4.
Thank you for not including the poorly animated bargain bin movies. Those are always the most boring part of any animated movie rank, looking at you Saberspark, cause nobody has seen them, and you don’t have to watch them to know they’re shit or meh.
My problem with the Demon Slayer "movie" is that they didn't remove the credits of the entertainment district, so there was just a large wall of credits in the middle of the movie. (I heard some people left the theatre when they saw them thinking the movie was over, which is so funny) I sure everyone knew this was a cash grab but I didn't expect them to literally slam the episodes together without adding or cutting anything. Of course the episodes themselves are incredible (especially s2 ep 17) but that's what they are, episodes. They weren't intended to be viewed this way. For example, after ep 17 there was a massive cliffhanger that kind of losses all of its impact.
I'm very happy that in 2023 my two favorite media (Animations and Videogames) had much more ups than downs! This helped me in my last year of high school...
At this point Despicable Me 4 is probably going to be better than most of what Disney put out, at least Illumination are aware of their audience and who exactly their catering to.
Your description and ranking on the Mario Movie is one I completely agree with as a Mario fan. It’s the film that you know it was made for fans and nothing more, I can love all aspects of it especially the adaptations side, but as an actual film, it’s pretty mid, and is weak in a narrative structure. Also, Across the Spider-Verse is by far the best animated film of the year, but good, the animators definitely deserve respect.
Everyone in the Miraculous Ladybug fandom was saying how the movie was better than the actual show. Which, yes, it kinda is… except, the bar wasn’t very high to begin with, so that isn’t saying much. 😂
Ruby Gilman lost me with how it portrayed teenagers, you could just tell it's a portrayal from middle aged grown ups with all the forced unnatural progressive speak like saying prom is a "post colonial patriarchal construct" and goofy dialogue like algabae and mother flipping. Even the most awkward teens don't do this crap. It seems like an allegory for second generation immigrants (not saying this is necessarily the intention but being one myself I could see patterns in how Ruby sees things) which is interesting but kind of takes a backseat to the less interesting plot about being some kraken princess. That's my perspective as an adult anyways, I'm sure a 6 year old would like it fine

I felt spiderverse was a great movie in a writing sense but was too much in an animation sense. There is something to be said for more subtlety in scenes and that some scenes were brilliant due to the stark contrast.
For It's SpiderVerse or The Boy and The Heron but I won't be sad if The Boy and The Heron won Best Animated Picture but my hoping that Spiderverse Won the first animated movie for both movies to win oscar ❤🎉

Well if it wasn’t for spider-man ATSV, i would say Black Clover: Sword of the wizard King was my 2023 film. That was a very hype ass hell movie. Would suggest to anyone who is an anime fan, black clover fan, or if someone wanting to get into Black Clover
The only bad thing about this movie is the fact that it reminded me of Bridget's theme from Strive 💀 something I never thought I'd be saying about a Guilty Gear song 😭
Elemental gave me a real big piece of humble pie. I watched the trailer like "oh fucking God, ANOTHER Romeo and Juliet story" only to watch it turn out to be not that generic.
Remember when we thought that Ruby Gillman would be a great, heartfelt story that would continue Dreamworks’ pattern of kicking Disney’s butt in theatres, and that Elemental would be far inferior… yeah….
the reason the peasants is animated is because the book was released in a polish impressionist period, and the entire movie is inspired by era-appropriate paintings. there are a few scenes that are exact redraws of famous impressionist polish paintings and I assume the whole idea of the movie stemmed from that. very pleasantly surprised to see it here btw!
The situation behind Across the Spider-Verse is probably one of the worst situations in media. Fuck Lord and Miller. These animators are amazing in their own right and deserve all the praise and all the extra help those two got deserve praise. And Oh my god, a FRICKIN 12 YEAR OLD worked/animated on this movie…Feck. You know, I still think Animators and VFX workers should have their own union.
I haven't watched the monkey King yet but when it comes to a retelling of the journey to the east I recommend sayuki because I think it's actually pretty good
I haven't watched unicorn wars, but I have seen other reviews on it. I was shocked to see that it really did come out last year! It always seemed so.... unique... that I truely thought that it cam out in early 2010s So glad Disney didn't get to partake in awards ceremonies this year
Nice video! I do have some feedback about how you did the transitions. I’d prefer the transitions to be more related to the movie with its music and longer than they are. The transitions are honestly way too loud and hurt my ears a little. Plus the music is short and kinda gets annoying after awhile as it keeps on repeating and never gets any less loud. Still good video and your thoughts were interesting to hear!
I really liked Suzume, i went into the cinema blind(ok it's a Shinkai movie i kinda knew what i was in for) and really enjoyed it though i made a joke to myself about a minute in and inadvertently called the end reveal, Mario was very mid and i wish it did more with it's characters, like i really liked the Peach backstory scene but wish it went on longer, And yeah Spider-Verse was great and I'm really hyped to see a certain character they've confirmed will appear.
Aside from Across the Spider-Verse, my favorite animated movies to come out this year (or just movies in general) were Suzume and Wish. Suzume had a lot of incredibly endearing moments and shows how much Makoto Shinkai films really do understand their characters to really get me to feel for them when it wants me to. Wish made me realize how much of older Disney films I had been missing in a while and I like how it tried to be a little more subtle and open to interpretation with its messages. It was a joy to watch for me and it is unfortunate to see you not like it. I also would like to see Nimona, The Boy and the Heron, and Mutant Mayhem soon.
@@dejus_e I personally never care if a movie becomes predictable as long as they make the story entertaining with fun character moments, good jokes, the works. I definitely think the side character variety could've been stronger, but my eyes and ears were on Asha and King Magnifico the whole way through. That and the movie was beautiful and the songs were a legit jam.

wish is good when you have low expectations imo. the characters, side characyers and villains especially, were shallow and had no development apart from the short guy. the songs also had little to no depth. its died down to a 5/10 at best for me

Not technically animated, but it basically is. Hundreds of Beavers. It’s an absolutely insane slapstick comedy of a man becoming a fur trapper. The reason I say it’s basically animated is due to how much of it takes place on green screens. It uses actors in animal costumes and puppets throughout. Seriously, don’t let the look distract you. I know it looks dumb on the surface, but this is one of the smartest written films I’ve seen. So many gags happen and continue to come back and evolve as the film goes on. It is a genuine masterpiece and it needs more love.
I didnt really love spiderverse. Like it was good but the story did not resonate with me like the first one. Boy and the Heron takes my top spot this year.
So as a jazz fan when you finished talking about I immediately went to listen to the sound track now I have to watch this anime cause Holy shit that ost is fire forward is Definitely my favorite of the songs

I really wish GKIDS wasn't being so discreet about when they're planning to release Mars Express. It's one of my most anticipated releases of the year, yet have no idea when it's actually coming out!
I can't say that I agree about The Boy and the Heron. It's a gorgeous movie, with a lot of imagination and great scenes, but as a whole movie, I thought that it didn't hold up to the standard of Ghibli. There is little to no exploration of the characters, no real plot to speak of, and a surprising lack of poetry. A beautiful movie with little substance. Also, Miyazaki's most personal movie ? Really ? When The Wind Rises exists ? Porco Rosso ? Castle in the Sky ? Overall, a decent movie, but still a disappointment for a Miyazaki movie.

Lord and Miller treat their animators about as well as Mappa Studios does.
I'd either "Nimona" or "Across the Spider-Verse" ranks the top in high quality animated feature of 2023
Funny how migration was the illumination movie with very little licensed music, but the mario movie was the one that got stuck with all of them.
And the Mario movie had an original score too but illumination forced in the licensed music

I felt spiderverse was a great movie in a writing sense but was too much in an animation sense. There is something to be said for more subtlety in scenes and that some scenes were brilliant due to the stark contrast.
For It's SpiderVerse or The Boy and The Heron but I won't be sad if The Boy and The Heron won Best Animated Picture but my hoping that Spiderverse Won the first animated movie for both movies to win oscar ❤🎉

As someone who watched A Silent Voice in December and with it being my favorite piece of media ever made plus hearing a lot about Your Name I think ima add Suzume to my list.
Ngl I’ve only seen like four of the movies on this list in full length
And I also find it kinda hilarious how many people were hyping up Dreamworks as the next top dog in animated movies and surpassing Disney
But I honestly skipped out on the 2023 movie releases of both Disney AND Dreamworks
I guess I’ll have to say which movie impresses me more in 2024

Well if it wasn’t for spider-man ATSV, i would say Black Clover: Sword of the wizard King was my 2023 film. That was a very hype ass hell movie. Would suggest to anyone who is an anime fan, black clover fan, or if someone wanting to get into Black Clover

Elemental gave me a real big piece of humble pie. I watched the trailer like "oh fucking God, ANOTHER Romeo and Juliet story" only to watch it turn out to be not that generic.
Remember when we thought that Ruby Gillman would be a great, heartfelt story that would continue Dreamworks’ pattern of kicking Disney’s butt in theatres, and that Elemental would be far inferior… yeah….
the reason the peasants is animated is because the book was released in a polish impressionist period, and the entire movie is inspired by era-appropriate paintings. there are a few scenes that are exact redraws of famous impressionist polish paintings and I assume the whole idea of the movie stemmed from that. very pleasantly surprised to see it here btw!

The situation behind Across the Spider-Verse is probably one of the worst situations in media. Fuck Lord and Miller. These animators are amazing in their own right and deserve all the praise and all the extra help those two got deserve praise.

I haven't watched unicorn wars, but I have seen other reviews on it. I was shocked to see that it really did come out last year! It always seemed so.... unique... that I truely thought that it cam out in early 2010s

Nice video! I do have some feedback about how you did the transitions.
I’d prefer the transitions to be more related to the movie with its music and longer than they are. The transitions are honestly way too loud and hurt my ears a little. Plus the music is short and kinda gets annoying after awhile as it keeps on repeating and never gets any less loud. Still good video and your thoughts were interesting to hear!
I really liked Suzume, i went into the cinema blind(ok it's a Shinkai movie i kinda knew what i was in for) and really enjoyed it though i made a joke to myself about a minute in and inadvertently called the end reveal, Mario was very mid and i wish it did more with it's characters, like i really liked the Peach backstory scene but wish it went on longer, And yeah Spider-Verse was great and I'm really hyped to see a certain character they've confirmed will appear.
Aside from Across the Spider-Verse, my favorite animated movies to come out this year (or just movies in general) were Suzume and Wish. Suzume had a lot of incredibly endearing moments and shows how much Makoto Shinkai films really do understand their characters to really get me to feel for them when it wants me to. Wish made me realize how much of older Disney films I had been missing in a while and I like how it tried to be a little more subtle and open to interpretation with its messages. It was a joy to watch for me and it is unfortunate to see you not like it. I also would like to see Nimona, The Boy and the Heron, and Mutant Mayhem soon.

Imo Wish was kind of boring for me, we all knew what was gonna happen and it happened.
@@dejus_e I personally never care if a movie becomes predictable as long as they make the story entertaining with fun character moments, good jokes, the works. I definitely think the side character variety could've been stronger, but my eyes and ears were on Asha and King Magnifico the whole way through. That and the movie was beautiful and the songs were a legit jam.

wish is good when you have low expectations imo. the characters, side characyers and villains especially, were shallow and had no development apart from the short guy. the songs also had little to no depth. its died down to a 5/10 at best for me

Not technically animated, but it basically is.
Hundreds of Beavers. It’s an absolutely insane slapstick comedy of a man becoming a fur trapper. The reason I say it’s basically animated is due to how much of it takes place on green screens. It uses actors in animal costumes and puppets throughout. Seriously, don’t let the look distract you. I know it looks dumb on the surface, but this is one of the smartest written films I’ve seen. So many gags happen and continue to come back and evolve as the film goes on. It is a genuine masterpiece and it needs more love.
I don't know why. But the dying pelican scene from The Boy and the Heron has stuck with me for weeks.

I didnt really love spiderverse. Like it was good but the story did not resonate with me like the first one. Boy and the Heron takes my top spot this year.
So as a jazz fan when you finished talking about I immediately went to listen to the sound track now I have to watch this anime cause Holy shit that ost is fire forward is Definitely my favorite of the songs

1. Super Mario movie- I’m a huge Mario fan I loved the scenes the characters it just warmed my heart especially the Mario and Luigi scenes 😊❤💚!!!
2. Spider man across the multiverse- it was so epic I absolutely loved miles as a character the scenes were amazing 🤩!
3. Nimona- amazing movie with epic story and characters!
I really wish GKIDS wasn't being so discreet about when they're planning to release Mars Express. It's one of my most anticipated releases of the year, yet have no idea when it's actually coming out!
I can't say that I agree about The Boy and the Heron. It's a gorgeous movie, with a lot of imagination and great scenes, but as a whole movie, I thought that it didn't hold up to the standard of Ghibli. There is little to no exploration of the characters, no real plot to speak of, and a surprising lack of poetry. A beautiful movie with little substance. Also, Miyazaki's most personal movie ? Really ? When The Wind Rises exists ? Porco Rosso ? Castle in the Sky ? Overall, a decent movie, but still a disappointment for a Miyazaki movie.
