Last night a Hinge date asked me my spiciest take in this world so I told her Travis Etienne will be the fantasy bust of the year. What’s your spiciest fantasy take?
Robert Tonyan can easily be a top 5 TE by the end of the season. He'll likely be the go-to redzone option on a team that's had one of the best offenses over the past few years.
The Ravens need a running back whom they can send in motion and/or line up as an extra wide receiver when needed. They don’t utilize their running backs well in their passing scheme.
@@macattack6054 - We’ll see. I’m as big of a Greg Roman fan as there is, and even I’m skeptical. He has almost *NO* ingenuity when it comes to the passing game.

their offense isnt completely without checkdowns. checkdowns put a defender in an area that Lamar may want to escape to. Hence "Lamar is the checkdown". if they had checkdowns all the time defenses could figure out which side of the field Lamar wants to escape to beforehand and take it away. Running qbs are most dangerous when their WRs drag defenders downfield.

I was waiting for a mention of the Ravens also having a bottom 10 offensive line last season. The passing numbers Lamar put up the first 9-10 weeks of the season are amazing considering what little he had around him all season, talent wise and scheme wise.
@@Nerevarine420 his TD/Int ratio last year can be taken out of context so easily from a pure numbers stand point. I really hope the ravens find answers. I feel Rashod Bateman can be a guy that can win one on one and break tackles after the catch and it can help a lot. If ravens can’t defeat this, we will be in trouble
Baltimore needs to learn how to mass protect against very obvious blitzes. Very rarely will coaches rush more than 7 defenders (because they don't wanna leave a reciever open). So use your tight ends, a receiver, and the Halfback to buy you time.
The thing about cover 0 is even if you max protect, the defense still has one more defender. If you motion a tight end into protect, the defender guarding him just adds on to the blitz
They do the problem is most of the OL was backups/3rd string by week 5. Last year doesnt count. Ravens are going to be dominate this year if they stay healthy.
Just realized around the 9:10 mark that Deebo Samuel can fit pretty well into their offense. He is a good running back, and not having to pass it means no sacks and picks. It would also mean that when he goes to receiver mode he should take some defense with him letting Lamar run the ball. I think it could be a perfect trade for the Ravens. And as far as I know, 49ers probably don’t want to keep him assuming he wants to leave.
Well you're mistaken, deebo was never going to get traded this offseason. And now that the draft has happened, there's a 0% chance they trade him as they wouldn't even be getting a first rounder this year for him. The 49ers usually sign all of their top players in late July, and even if they can't get anything worked out they theoretically have 3 more years of control over Deebo's contract.
Probably yea, it could work pretty well. It won't though. Deebo doesn't want to play a RB type. And sure I don't give a fuck what he wants just as much as the next guy but giving up assets for a guy just to try and make him do something he doesn't want to do will create a huge mess. It's a nice hypothetical but that's about it.
@@guyfromnewark He is a WR, but he did run the ball quite a bit last year. And yeah money is a good point. But they would be giving up something that would possibly free up money.
Deebo can't be a full time gadget WR forever. Takes a huge toll on his body and endurance. If they insist doing so he would def want a contract worthy of his unique specialization, to along with the missed games he may have due to those responsibilities.
I love how you are able to articulate the game in a way that is friendly to people without deep knowledge of football. Personally, I love watching but I often have no idea what's going on besides "they're blitzing" or "he's going for a big throw". Seeing you break the game down with graphics is super helpful and helps me appreciate the work that coaches and players are putting in both on and off the field.
I find it fascinating when defenses find answers like these to an offense that has been great in the past. I've said this before but there is just a special place for great defenses in my heart.
Yeah this fact has been known for months now. If Phins decided to Blitz you 40 times in one game you know it's a problem. I think Lamar didn't prepare himself properly to handle pressure and the OCs didn't give him enough sways to scheme around it.
@@kingsantacruz2866 I don’t think that’s the case cause honestly teams who had the personal to blitz like the Dolphins did always did it to Lamar so he already know . Lamar was literally top 5 against the blitz in years before last, Lamar will be completely fine it’s really not his fault his teams o-line doesn’t block or pick up blitzes at all, and he still can win and his coaches low level passing schemes make it even harder
People acting like Lamar wasn’t 9-4 (2nd in the afc) with half his offense injured before the season started and all the experts saying it was going to be a bad year and still got them to 2nd in the afc eyeing a bye in the playoffs before he got injured.

Great video. Hey Alex - Maybe you can make a video about Tyler Huntley and what you saw on tape when he started for the Ravens last year? What were the similarities in the offense and what were the differences? 🤔 It looked to me like Greg Roman simplified the offense for Huntley so he could make quicker reads and check downs, but I am very interested in hearing what your thorough study of the tape discovers.
Please remember how bad the offense line play in general was last year. It should be a whole new and improved line this year. Last year they had big al being a turnstyle, ronnie stanley last half a game, and a life long guard converted to center
literally the worst O line i’ve ever seen baltimore dress. Grossly understated. A lot of people are going to lose money this year gambling against Lamar
I’m so glad you made this video and called out Roman, it’s been his biggest issue as an OC in his career & why he’s never considered for HC jobs. His failures with guys like Kaep, Tyrod & now Lamar to name a few are all the same correctable thing he doesn’t coach well, hope he can figure something out and soon
Thanks brother, yeah.. I think Lamar is just so talented, Roman is incapable of sinking his battle ship. But Roman definitely isn't helping (in the passing game)
@@AlexRollinsNFL Completely agree, their run game is so exotic but the passing concepts are quite vanilla. They act as if Lamar didn’t play in a vertical passing attack in college under Bobby Petrino, they should look to mix in some of those principles and add the sight adjusts & quick game counters
Biggest thing for the Ravens this year is the O-line staying healthy. Getting Stanley an All-Pro LT back 100% will be huge, Morgan Moses will definitely be an upgrade at the RT, and Tyler Linderbaum gives them the best Center they've had since Ryan Jensen. It's clear they are trying to recapture the 2019 offense, that just straight up bullied teams into submission I just hope as a Ravens fan it works out.
Greg Roman has NEVER been adept in the passing game in his his life. His run scheme's are great...his passing scheme, or complete lack of them, are worse than Chip kelly. it's high school passing in the NFL. The solution for the Ravens is to either get rid of Roman, or bring in a pass play designer for him. I repeat, Roman has never been adept in the passing game.

@@RhiscFactor yea coaching staff is lazy as in trying to soley rely on Lamar’s playmaking and insane athletic ability to bail them out instead of actually put a real scheme around him to help him.
The Steelers were the team that laid the blueprint on containing LJ. It's why they were able to sweep Baltimore 2 seasons in a row, and being 5-1 against Baltimore since 2019. They always send 5 rushers, use dline/lb stunts, and send Nickel CB blitzes, contain the edges and force LJ to throw or get sacked. But luckily not every team has the edge rushers like Pit.
Teams are successful against Lamar because the ravens don’t have good wrs to make them pay for blitzing so y not send the house. Majority of the time the wrs aren’t close to getting open an can’t win one on ones. It’s common sense!
@@Diggs-nw5iz Man the Steelers have always had issues covering multiple WRs even when they had elite defense in the 2000s lol. It's why Brady always had their number. I'm a Steeler fan too Btw
Good to see someone giving credit where it is due when it is due why it works when it does. So many people said just always blitz all the time simple as that. Not quite the defenses that had it work well I hate them as I am a Raven's fan but they deserve more credit if it was so simple there would have never been any success at all.
The ravens don’t have good wrs so blitzing the crap out of Lamar works. U can go one on one with our wrs because they aren’t physical enough to win. Also the ravens offensive game plan is trash!
I think people scoffed at the idea that losing David Culley before the season would have a major impact on the Ravens, but I wonder how much of an impact that had on the team's passing game throughout the season. The team was rolling with a new passing game coordinator, so perhaps a full year of experience will help for 2022. Harbaugh is also one of the top 5 coaches in the NFL, so I trust he'll help develop some answers for Lamar. Also, one thing that stood out to me in this breakdown is how often Lamar actually did a good job finding space in the pocket, even with the blitzes, to be able to find a receiver. The problem was more so that no receivers were getting separation. Hopefully Bateman can be more of an answer in this regard, if he can stay healthy for a full year. Lastly, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how blitzes work/don't work against the read option play. It seemed (anecdotally) that Baltimore ran this less last year, but when a team DOES blitz against a read option, who has the advantage: offense or defense?
Thank you!! The ravens have bad receivers! Point blank period. No separation, no awareness. The receivers Lamar’s has wouldn’t be starters on any other teams except Hollywood who is no longer there.
Football really comes down to getting a hat on a hat, it's really all about the numbers. You can successfully defend the read option/zone read without blitzing, and you can unsuccessfully defend it while blitzing. If there's a defender for the give, and keep, that's all that matters
Guy had no O-line, three starting running backs out, his 1st round WR sidelined, so yeah of course DCs are gonna throw the kitchen sink at Lamar because he literally was the only offensive weapon the team had.
Greg Roman is a genius. The first coach to truely utilize a qbs run ability. Has caused a trickle down effect in the nfl. However like you pointed out if they can stop the blitz they would be able to dictate what the defense will have to do. Lamar is highest ceiling player we have ever seen.
Wait so the ONLY season where this worked was the season where EVERY rb was injured and we had off the couch players? Ravens had to resort to a passing dominant style with b list receivers, decimated o-line and absolutely no pass protection from the makeshift rbs?!!!! Let’s see them try it again this year with a healthy/strong O-line plus Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins back. 😂Lmao.
Yeah pretty much lol, the rushing offense last year was actually terrible and you could tell it forced Lamar to keep throwing and throwing. Things will change with Dobbins and Edwards back. Teams wont be able to sell out on the blitz. Last year was a wild year.
Reminds me of what the Titans did in the playoffs when they beat the Ravens. Or maybe it was a pass coverage thing. Alex i would love to hear your take on that. Ive learned sp much about Football from you.
That was more the Ravens than the Titans. Felt like Roman used that game as an audition for a HC gig, Lamar threw the ball 50+ times when the team just came off the single greatest rushing season in NFL History 🤦🏽♂️
Good video with a giant “BUT” at the end. Why is it when Brady had down years no on blamed McDaniels? Or Brees, or Manning, or Montana, or any of a hundred different QBs? Why is it every analyst has a Pavlovian instinct to protect Jackson and blame the offensive coordinator? Does it occur to anyone that Jackson can’t perform the fix the coordinator sets up for him? Does it escape your attention that this is actually a common theme with QBs that play backyard football in the NFL? How many average QBs can read that a blitz is coming and hit the hot receiver in stride consistently, a dozen? two dozen? But we cannot ask those questions, we must protect Jackson at all cost. Funny how everyone said Tannehill sucked in Miami, then he gets to Tennessee and lights up the league, where we’re all these analysts with their critiques of coaching staff?
He did??? All I saw was him explaining how opposing defenses keep outcoaching Greg Roman in fact the biggest knock you can make on Lamar in the cover zero plays is how he either takes to long to identify cover zero or he doesn't know the playbook well enough to quickly throw to the fast receivers with a step on their defender
Isn’t more about simulated pressure that lines up as cover zero? There were so many players on the LOS then multiple players dropping from the middle of the line to clog the quick slant etc.
Good question, a lot of teams did that and Lamar struggled against it. However, a simulated pressure is a 4 man rush with one of the rushers coming from the 2nd or 3rd level, so it's a little different. What you're describing did in fact simulate pressure, but they were not "Simulated Pressures."
As a huge jets fan I will say our defense doesnt match up very well. We struggled against the run last year and I don't see it changing this year. Our defense is vulnerable up the middle. Saleh likes to have our Dline attack full steam ahead, not really reading blocks which often causes them to over run draws and traps. We should be better at setting the edge so getting outside might not be as easy as last year but if your oline is big and physical they could push us around.
I remember him having the same issues when he was in college especially if you hit him a couple of times. That's why he didn't go to the national title game. He lost against the UH. That was a great game.
Of course the absurd insults hurled at Lamar Jackson lately have been way out of line. It doesn't even rise to the level of criticism, but stays in the gutter of visceral repulsion. That said, Lamar is not at all above criticism...but constructive criticism. And his performance for especially the second half of last season left a ton of room for criticism. You can just watch the game clips included in this video and see where Lamar was rather weak last year. I'm sure he and the Ravens coaching staff spent many hours during the offseason constructively critiquing Lamar and themselves. But he's a rare talent at the QB position and they know it. And he's a hard worker and is driven to be great. So there's no doubt Lamar and the coaches over the offseason analysed to death the weaknesses in their passing game and QB play last season. We can expect that Ravens and Lamar to be much improved in those areas this coming season. He's only going into his 4th year as full-time QB1. The 2020 season was a virtual washout given how unstable and unpredictable everything was because of the NFL covid policies. And 2021 the team was decimated by an appalling number of injuries at almost every position. But I like their chances in 2022 with Lamar being a year wiser and the team being healthy again.
They did the same thing to my boi dak and all this sudden he became one of the best statistical qbs vs the blitz in the nfl. Don’t sleep on player development
Never knew that this film breakdown along with the previous film breakdown on the ravens by also Alex Rollins is why Lamar got left out of the ESPN NFL's top ten quarterbacks list according to anonymous football people.
the o-line last year was literally backyard football bush league. He is 100% not limited by the blitz (yet) he was just getting defended by a jv league squad.
I mean we can't forget that the Ravens O-line was awful last year he was always running for his life behind the pocket, hopefully we get our tackles back healthy we had guards playing tackle so..
The reason why teams did this was because the Ravens had easily the worst Offensive Line in Franchise History thanks to past prime Villanueva, plus Ben Powers, and Tyre Phillips being trash. Plus it also doesn't help that both JK Dobbins and Gus Edwards were out the whole season. I don't know if teams will be able to keep this up since the Ravens O-Line got much better this offseason.
Nah they will. Its not just the O-line but these DCs will test Roman's inability to adapt his play calling and utilize obvious answers to obvious problems. Last year proved it wasn't just a personnel issue but a coaching staff one.
@@t4d0W That was part of the issue I will give you that. But look at what happened in 2019 when the Ravens had a healthy Offensive Line. Teams couldn't blitz them.
I think something that you also missed with the Steelers is how they play against the RPO's. I genuinely believe they get in his head sometimes when he hands the ball off in those RPO plays and they still hit him. TJ Watt does it all the time against the Ravens.
Run game was one of the main reasons they could blitz. Defenses won't blitz that much when they have to worry about someone (not coming off the couch). It won't be the same this year.
That's because Greg Roman doesn't have a game plan for it , and the offensive line has been trash . We have to have the personal to give Lamar chance to read the defense. And call check downs Roman have every receiver going fown field.
Injuries in the backfield and the Oline is why teams were so confident blitzing. I guarantee the first two teams that try this with this revamped offense will get 200yards rushing on them and the play action will be wide open since they are sacrificing DB’s blitzing.
The key thing is Roman said that he doesn't come into games with a specific game plan because defenses play ravens so differently. Well they are going to need to start.
It's a team game an it takes more than just one man to win.But I do agree that it's on the coaches to see what adjustments need to be made to deal with any situation that's going on.Plus the front office needs to get a better reciving group for LJ8 to not get smashed every game, but our backfield is gonna be back on point this season.so LET'S GO RAVENS BEAT EVERYONE IN 2022!!
He’s about as inconsistent as any other qb. I can pull up film from any other qb who misses guys. What’s inconsistent is his receivers. You can’t say make a statement saying Lamar is inconsistent, but in the next sentence say his receivers drop everything an get no separation. Inconsistent is having hood to great receivers an not being able to get the ball to the often enuff. Lamar’s has bottom tier receivers.
You make no sense if his receivers aren't getting open , and he is getting blitz with a bad o line . He is gonna be off some plays . But this is a lazy take . Lamar throws the ball as good as any other quarterback he doesn't have the receivers that can make their bad throw look good either all quarterbacks thtow a bad pass don't be ridiculous.
If you go back and look, you'll see that the same exact pattern was the case for McNabb. Teams did the same thing, the same way. They collapse the pocket and stunt their blitz rusher to certain gaps and FORCE him to make accurate passes under pressure. The idea is nothing new, its also why Vick never really won anything. Yeah, he'd break out and put up a highlight here and there but the team would ultimately suffer and they'd have a losing record in the end.
Vick with the Falcons had us on the verge of the super bowl, these type of quarterbacks can definitely win big. I mean Hell Mcnabb and Vick literally played each other in the NFC Championship and Mcnabb was ever so close to winning that super bowl.
2:02 lamar has to see that blitz coming just based off alignment and prolly film. Clear as day the colts were gonna blitz so change the play. Idk if he has the power to change the play tho. Baltimore needs to learn how to mass protect against very obvious blitzes. Very rarely will coaches rush more than 7 defenders (because they don't wanna leave a reciever open). So use your tight ends, a receiver, and the Halfback to buy you time.
They max protect a lot against those looks.
Maybe you should teach them
Alex Rollins Seth Rollins M
Deebo is a WR not a running back and we already have those plus he's too expensive
Yea & it's happened all throughout history.
I Rembert in the early 2000s when defenses figured out the StLouis Rams
Definitely. Side tangent: I think it says a lot about where the league is that Fangio had such a good defense, but got fired
@@AlexRollinsNFL Well... to be fair. Broncos WERE 7-10....😅
Yeah this fact has been known for months now. If Phins decided to Blitz you 40 times in one game you know it's a problem. I think Lamar didn't prepare himself properly to handle pressure and the OCs didn't give him enough sways to scheme around it.
Honestly, I feel he didn't think anyone could catch him.

Huntley is a more athletic but weaker arm version of Baker Mayfield. The next time he looks to the left side of the field will be the first

The Steelers were the team that laid the blueprint on containing LJ. It's why they were able to sweep Baltimore 2 seasons in a row, and being 5-1 against Baltimore since 2019.

😂Lmao.

Everyone critiqued those miami coaches considering it was Adam Gase.
@@braincellsmc6481 I heard no criticism of the O coordinators in Miami UNTIL Tanneyhill went to Tenn.
Dude broke down how smart LJ actually is. That’s crazy
Alex how does the jets 4-3 and specifically Salehs defense matchup with the ravens offense and Lamar. Going into week 1?
As a huge jets fan I will say our defense doesnt match up very well. We struggled against the run last year and I don't see it changing this year. Our defense is vulnerable up the middle. Saleh likes to have our Dline attack full steam ahead, not really reading blocks which often causes them to over run draws and traps. We should be better at setting the edge so getting outside might not be as easy as last year but if your oline is big and physical they could push us around.
Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't. Two massive thumbs up on nailing this one.
Thanks Jojo!
I remember him having the same issues when he was in college especially if you hit him a couple of times. That's why he didn't go to the national title game. He lost against the UH. That was a great game.
What’s the UK rap song that uses this beat
But I like their chances in 2022 with Lamar being a year wiser and the team being healthy again.

the o-line last year was literally backyard football bush league. He is 100% not limited by the blitz (yet) he was just getting defended by a jv league squad.
When everyone is 10 plus yards down the field it’s no check downs and the blocking sucks but hopefully it’s better next season
I mean we can't forget that the Ravens O-line was awful last year he was always running for his life behind the pocket, hopefully we get our tackles back healthy we had guards playing tackle so..
That dolphins game was something else while cover 0 did stop them I had never seen so many drops in my life

Blitzing Lamar is incredible remember them Dolphins 🐬 game the extra heat was too much
The reason why teams did this was because the Ravens had easily the worst Offensive Line in Franchise History thanks to past prime Villanueva, plus Ben Powers, and Tyre Phillips being trash.
Alex this Annalisys got you a new sub...And I am saving it for Lamar Haters.
I think something that you also missed with the Steelers is how they play against the RPO's. I genuinely believe they get in his head sometimes when he hands the ball off in those RPO plays and they still hit him. TJ Watt does it all the time against the Ravens.
That’s what defenders do hit them the more times the quarterback gets hit even late messes with some
Run game was one of the main reasons they could blitz.
When Alex Rollins has 3 videos about your struggles as a quarterback/offense maybe time for new coaching or a quarterback
😂😂 Me and Greg Roman have some serious beef
Injuries in the backfield and the Oline is why teams were so confident blitzing. I guarantee the first two teams that try this with this revamped offense will get 200yards rushing on them and the play action will be wide open since they are sacrificing DB’s blitzing.
The key thing is Roman said that he doesn't come into games with a specific game plan because defenses play ravens so differently. Well they are going to need to start.
Ravens are gonna have to put in a 4hr/week film clause for Lamar cause dude can not read a defense to save his life. That's a film room problem.
Brian Flores had him boxed. Now he's the DC for Pittsburgh. Gonna be interesting
The line was hurt and RBs were hurt and they could get away with it, not this year, let them do it and see what happen to them.
Good teach tape
It's about time. Not sure what took so long.
Lamar is a inconsistent thrower but it also doesn’t help that the wide receivers get no separation and drop everything
Great comment!
But his wr core isn’t that bad tbh, I could see Hollywood being a number 1 because he has the speed to atleast threatening a team deep. Than he has Sammy Watkins, mark Andrews
Imagine if Lamar had a follow through and half decent mechanics for his throwing motion. He would be able to throw it 200 yards
That’s funny cuz out of his 12 games he threw well of 200 yards 9 times
