Best size trimmer line for tall grasses? .080, .095, .105 put to test.

  • I fill spools with .080, .095, & .105 trimmer line and take the FS-90R out back to see how they hold up in some tall overgrown grasses. Yes, Stihl color codes their line, makes it a much easier with customers that aren't too fluent in the ways of outdoor power equipment.
    No, I don't normally work outside in those clothes, was getting dark and I wanted to finish this up.

    I like .080 for regular grass, even tall grass. .095 for the heavy stuff. Never has anything it couldn’t take down unless it was woody stalks. And then u need the brush cutting blade.

      All I use is .080 and i cut down fields of thick weeds. 15ft last me a long time. Spins faster, cuts cleaner due to higher speeds.
      Line is also cheaper and you get more. Less strain on your weedeater, it’s the best option there is.

    Years ago, I used '105s,' on a Jonsered RS40 Pro. But even that line was no match for the power of the machine. So I started using heavier lines that we're discarded from fishing vessels and they worked. I recently bought myself a machine powered by a Kawasaki TJ35i E and I bought a 3lb reel of 95 with it- needless to say the line and machine compliment each other and there has only been one occasion when the line kept snapping against what we call "stone grass"- but that was the exception. No more ever since so 95s do well for me and my machine.

    I appreciate you putting up this video. I enjoyed seeing the difference in performance. I have light to medium duty work on multiple properties, so I use the .080 round line. I have a 5 lb. 2000 foot spool of .080 line and I've had it for about ten years, I'm about half way through it. I only paid $12 for it at Walmart. I'm still reaping the benefits of that purchase, but unfortunately, the product has been discontinued ( gee, I wonder why? - not a large enough profit margin to keep it on the shelf). No troubles with old nylon line at all, the line still does it's job well and is not brittle at all. I would like to get another huge spool at a good price. Do you know any good industrial/commercial sources that have 5 lb spools or larger? Thanks again for the video! :)

    I’m running either 0.095 or 0.105 line. Unless you are cutting really fine grass, I’d go thicker than 0.080, just seems to last longer between re-spooling heads.

      OH NOES! Please god don't buy a yard machine. I'm not saying buy a stihl, but yard machines are horrible. Get a Stihl, echo, husqvarna, something with a better service after sale system. Yard machines are a pain to get parts for, and honestly, I wont even work on them as the cost of repairs is often more than the unit. Just my two cents

    • @Human1337
      @Human1337  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Mike Bishop Really just depends on what the material it is that you're cutting. If you've some heavy brush, and nothing around that can screw up the blades [concrete, fences, etc], then the stihl cutter blades work really well. You can sharpen them easily as well, makes them damn convenient. For around houses and residential areas though, I'd stick with trimmer line, safer that way.

    IMHO that is the wrong machine for mowing that bank. The old way was to use a big yellow Flymo swinging on a rope. A classic Flymo will cut brambles and things that shred cutting lines. They are almost unbeatable unless one happens to have an Allen-Scythe (an ancient British Made machine that is very useful for cutting brushwood and jungle up to about an inch thick) The big problem with those machines was that there was no jack-plug or panic button and it was not unheard of them to run-away from the operator and end up in the river!

    Vortex .095. Will run true not all over the place and will Outlast any of them lines 10 to 1 okay 5 to 1 depends on who's using machine that's not brush what works really well in Brush I see you can buy them now is the ones that have the chainsaw chains that flopped and they make them in the loops even backwards so the cutting teeth are to the inside I've always Built My Own so if I decelerate the chain goes into the groove and will stop cutting which is very nice you can actually run more restful teeth you know what I mean if you ever confront in the brush you got to hang on to it cuz it's a Mean Machine only make the chainsaw chain lipstick out 2 in at the most.
    Of course when I really want to get serious with the brush I get myASV Bobcat or my Cat put the old bull head on there are the feet con or the visimo which one of them will do the work of 10 men but it takes three mechanics to keep the damn things going extremely expensive to run masticator better to get a tractor with a rotary mower heavy duty one will do a lot for half the cost get everything PTO way cheaper and way tougher and you can put the horsepower to it bobcat in the skid steers got all the hydraulics in the hydraulic motors for the other stump grinders and masticators and every other attachment you always get a maintenance some and electronic stuff goes out and you can't even work on them you're in the business I know you'll look at that someday a tractor that you can used skid steer attachments on the front small enough so you can load it in your dump trailer and tow it with your pickup grapple Forks save your back! You can load you dump trailer brush and took the chainsaw and cut it down and pack it down with the tractor get a lot on there with no chipper.
    Have you learned Square file at least considered it your chain should cut better then a new chain ,skip tooth, never run it dry even if you have to mix a little diesel in your to break the glaze, never dull even for one cut, only cut wood not dirt and bark. Change speed no control you have good saws well maintenanced good job. Bark is dirt never suck it into your cut or touch it with your chain moving jog your chain 3 inches at a time it will debark your cut and your chain is not cutting it is pushing and you might slightly being a little tiny tooth if it was rolled in dirt charger chain on branches in Brush never suck bark even on a branch into your cut if you're cutting think about that little hand saw you use Jean on your saw cuts better than that so in one or two strokes so that's not a bar a bar length that's a half a revolution of your chain if you change not going fast you're not going to throw the whole entire chain on nothing that's a lot of tips but someday you'll get it and it will save your back and you tons and tons of work and lots of money there's a start
    I don't think too many Pros watch this video anyhow that's I left you this message here
