When I was 31 I started running after many years of drinking, smoking and eating bad food. I started from a heavy weight too. It took me a year and a half to run a 1:50 half and I got my weight down to 13st 4lbs even though I was still leading a bad lifestyle of junk food, smoking and drinking. Covid hit and I gave up and completely went back to my old ways for a few years.
Since then I gave up smoking. I have been 2 years sober and I am vegan too. I started running again a few weeks back at the age of 36 and I am starting from a much better position than before. I'd love to run a sub 40 10k. I'm not putting any pressure on it though. Just gonna take it one step at a time.

Great effort on the 10k PB, especially on your own. I'm training for a 10k PB attempt in a few weeks and hoping to go sub-40 for the first time. Current PB set a year ago at 41:59.

for people that are in decent shape and have access to a treadmill and want to start running, i recommend following this log below:
    Week 1, Monday-Thursday-Sunday
    Week 2, Wednesday-Saturday
    Week 3, Tuesday-Friday
From here, you simply repeat. You first need to figure out an ideal running pace for running 30 minutes without stopping. If your starting out, I recommend 6mph. You will also increase speed by 0.1 mph each time you run. Lets say you start doing the running log on monday (week 1). You will set the speed to 6mph. On Thursday, you will set the speed to 6.1 mph. On sunday, you will set the speed to 6.2 miles per hour. Each run will be 0.1 mph faster, and every run will be 30 minutes. This means you will run a slightly further distance in the same amount of time each time you run. What’s unique about this schedule is that it doesn’t reset to monday each week. It actually resets every 3 weeks. I made it this way so you can get 2 days of rest in between every workout. You don’t only get plenty of rest, you also always have the same amount of rest. If your lower body muscles adapt quickly and start healing faster, you can also try a 2 week cycle with only one day of rest in between. Week 1, Monday-Wednesday-Friday-Sunday
    Week 2, Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday

when you improve your running economy, you’re gonna fly; since you have the strength and aerobic base is growing. plyometrics will help too.

Hey Andrew, I really enjoy your channel and I can tell your an extremely disciplined and motivated person, as balancing a life of uploading videos, being a junior doctor, and taking care of heath along with things like social and mental wellbeing is incredibly difficult. I admire that. You truly do work hard and I can tell! I also see with this being about a year after starting your TH-cam that you want to keep your community growing and keep gain an extremely large following, I can make your goals happen! I am creating a startup group of TH-cam influencers who more than disciplined and want nothing more than the growth of their TH-cam channel. This group consists of influencers in the athlete/heath niche who meet weekly online over video chat to discuss each others analytics, give ideas, critique and improve videos, and learn from each others mistakes. This group will likely skyrocket the growth of your channel, as multiple minds working together are greater than 1. It is a small 1 hour commitment with massive amount of TH-cam knowledge in return! If you are interested, let me know and I would be honored if you would Like to Join this Start Up, If not good luck growing your channel, and view count, it will come brotha!!

I rather enjoy your videos, but wondering why you don't lean into the fact you are a medic, and show that aspect of your life, to set you apart from the thousands of similar "hybrid training" videos.

Yes, like "life of a runner doctor". That kind of stuff would give you views.

A couple reasons really… mainly because at the time I started the channel I wasn’t enjoying my work and felt it would be inauthentic to present myself as a doctor/fitness enthusiast as wasn’t sure that’s where I wanted to be going forward. Thankfully in a more positive place regarding my career with a better work life balance so would be open to including this aspect of my life a bit more - honestly didn’t think it would be that interesting/relevant but as a small channel I suppose I always need to be looking for ways to separate myself from the crowd - out of interest what sort of content would you like to see in regards to being a medic..?

@@AndrewRussellFitness I don't think it would have to necessarily be detailing your job as a medic (unless you wanted to) , but a few glimpses of that part life would I reckon provide more interesting and original context and background than than the usual shots of making coffee etc which every TH-camr does. People are endlessly fascinated by the medical profession

Actually they aren’t, some people clearly, but not loads. It would be a turn off to as many people as it would be an interest to others. Where it can be good is to show how you’ve balanced your training with a busy life (without necessarily going into the job, just like we wouldn’t expect you to go into any detail about relationships). 👍
