  • In this video, Dr. Kamal Singh speaks about Somatic Symptoms Disorder. Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) is a mental health condition characterized by the expression of physical symptoms that defy association with any discernible medical conditions.

Individuals affected with SSD often have heightened concerns about their health, leading to peculiar or unconventional behaviors as they attempt to grapple with their perceived symptoms. The condition may manifest at any age, and those affected commonly exhibit excessive anxiety about their physical well-being, frequently connecting benign symptoms to more severe illnesses.
    Symptoms of Somatic Symptom Disorders:
The symptoms of SSD vary among individuals, encompassing a spectrum of severity. Common manifestations include pain (with varying locations), shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, abdominal pain, and digestive issues like diarrhea or constipation.
    Diagnosing Somatic Symptom Disorders:
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) outlines criteria for diagnosing SSD, emphasizing the presence of distressing somatic symptoms that significantly disrupt daily functioning. The persistence of symptoms for over six months and the manifestation of anxious thoughts or behaviors in response to these symptoms are key diagnostic indicators. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough examination of personal and medical histories, accompanied by laboratory tests.
    Causes of Somatic Symptom Disorders:
Experiences of childhood abuse and trauma have been implicated in its development. Women, who are statistically more exposed to abuse and trauma, may be more susceptible to the disorder. Additionally, individuals with anxiety and a low pain threshold face an increased risk of developing SSD. Various risk factors, including drug and alcohol abuse, childhood abuse, and a history of chronic childhood illnesses, contribute to vulnerability.
    Related Disorders:
Several related disorders, collectively known as somatoform disorders, share similarities with SSD:
    1. Factitious Disorder: Involves the fabrication or exaggeration of physical or mental illnesses, sometimes extending to inducing illness in others.
    2. Conversion Disorder: Presents with symptoms affecting perception or mobility without identifiable physical causes.
    3. Illness Anxiety Disorder: Formerly hypochondriasis, characterized by excessive worry about having or acquiring an illness, with constant health-related concerns.
    Treatment for Somatic Symptom Disorders:
    1. Therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy proves most effective, guiding individuals to comprehend the emotional aspects of their symptoms and teaching coping mechanisms for anxiety.
    2. Medication: While medication isn't a primary treatment, antidepressants may be prescribed for concurrent anxiety or depression.
Acknowledging the need for assistance is crucial in managing SSD. Lifestyle adjustments, including increased physical activity, stress management, and the reduction of harmful habits, can contribute significantly to symptom improvement. Research suggests that 50% to 75% of individuals with SSD experience improvement with appropriate treatment.

Thank you for reaching out and watching my videos. I appreciate your interest in seeking help. However, I'm unable to provide individual consultations or treatment at this moment. My videos are intended for educational purposes, and I recommend consulting with a healthcare professional, a Psychiatrist in this case, for personalized advice and guidance. He/she will be better equipped to assess your specific situation by taking detailed medical history, conducting general physical examination, etc. and provide appropriate guidance. Cognitive Behavioral therapy works very well in such cases, and if needed, some medications can also be prescribed depending over the underlying condition.
Thank you for understanding, and I hope my videos continue to be a helpful resource for you.
