I'm African and I am dying to meet her and ask her which country I come from. If she doesn't correctly say my country from the 54 countries in Africa, she is getting canceled.
This victimization is getting really offensive for people who actually are victims.

I know this is another echo chamber channel but I have to say this take is bad. If someone who interacts with customers shows racism a company would sack them to avoid backlash, to protect the people of that race and keep a certain standard of customer service. That means practically anyone has the power to get someone fired depending on the actions of the customer service provider. In this instance of course it was not racism but personally I feel it was understandable ignorance and all she had to do was explain and not over-react. This was not an instance that got him fired hopefully partially because most people are disagreeing with her and clearly it was not racism.

I had to speed it up because It was so heartbreaking. This usually doesn't happen to me. There was something about his voice when he asked for forgiveness that just made me lose my composure.😭

As a white guy I had a very similar conversation with an Asian uber driver where he said I looked French and I replied that I was Scottish heritage. We had a very funny conversation about the differences in European facial features and laughed. I can't imagine how sad someine must be to get this uptight about that

I work with a lot of guys from India and they are always very curious about my green eyes and wonder where I’m from because of how rare bright green eyes like mine are. They’ve found it fascinating to learn about my family and how surprisingly enough because we have an English background a lot of us have green eyes. It wasn’t racist at all. It was just curiosity about the different features humans have and it’s been a fun topic discuss because they have their own differences that I got to learn about

That's the way it usually goes. Someone sees something, makes a guess based on their own knowledge, experience, assumptions, etc... asks that person about it... and then the person is wrong. And then you have a conversation about that. I'm mixed race of a few and people ask me if I'm Mexican, Native American, etc all the time. I'm not, not even close, but it doesn't offend me at all. It's often even hard to tell where someone's actually from even if they're native.
There was that one Japanese guy (I think Yuta or something) with a TH-cam video where he asked Japanese people if they could recognize from which south-eastern Asian country people were from. And... they had just as much of a hard time telling as non-Asians would. Even for Japanese people themselves they had a hard time telling.
It's just dumb to assume someone knows everything about you just by 1 look. Not just dumb, it's very arrogant. And then getting mad about it as well. Honestly, it's no different from those pathetic nobles that got mad at people not being able to tell their status just based on how the nobles acted. You'd think we went back to the middle ages.

She objects to the idea of Asians being grouped together, but then repeatedly refers to Asians in a collective way by saying "Us" - thus reinforcing the idea that Asians operate as a group and are indistinguishable from one another. You don't get to have it both ways lady...

I’m a black woman, I used to think it might be racist if white people say we all look the same. I recently moved to a town that is 98% white. And when I tell you, many times a day I think to myself “damn…many of them look the exact same”. I do not believe it’s a racism thing. I think it’s simply an ethnic thing. Even when two black ppl look very similar I can tell them apart because I grew up around black ppl. So it makes sense to apply to all ethnicities. You’d probably have to be someone who always grew up around people who were like so incredibly diverse
Pretty much, I would say that the human mind learns to distinguish faces at an early age, and if you have a limited training set, it's harder to pick up other differences as an adult.

Kind of true, if they are just acquaintances. But in the case of Asians for me it is hard to tell if they are Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese etc. put on top of that her British (I guess) accent. Asking people where they were from used to be a conversation starter, now I just rarely ask any questions that could possibly offend someone, which pretty much could be nearly anything. Sad. With that deterrent, along with everyone’s nose being buried in their phones, soon it will be rare to talk to anyone unnecessarily.

Thank you - my wife is filipina, and I can't tell you how many times she's been asked casually if she's native American, hispanic...or, my personal favorite, "what kind of asian are you?" 😂 We live in the southeast, so it's not too out of the ordinary for well-meaning folks to ask in ernest, not meaning to sound offensive in the slightest. She measures her response based on the intent of the person asking. If they're literally well-meaning and just curious, she'll kindly tell them. Only 1-2 times in the near decade we've been together has someone come off intentionally snarky / rude / mean-hearted...to which she either ignores them, or replies with "figure it out on your own time - have a blessed day!" I honestly find myself getting more upset in those rare instances than she does - but then again, she's so graceful and kind in all she does, it's just natural for her to handle even the most uncomfortable situations with such class. I'm very blessed to have her as my partner in life and best friend.

My wife is Mexican, came here in 2001. I'm on my HOA board where I live and I had to get estimates for sidewalk repairs. So a vendor comes and we're walking our property and just talking and I ask if he's Mexican. I told him what state my wife is from in Mexico and we were just joking around about women. His wife is American. So I was talking to my fellow board members and we had already been discussing three companies we had bids from, so I said I think the Mexican guy (for the life of my i couldnt remember his company name) is the best price and does the best work as he did the development across the street. Well one of the other board members says to me that's offensive and racist as her husband that died was Mexican! And I was flabbergasted and said BUT HE IS MEXICAN! And how can what I said be racist when my wife is Mexican?! People will be offended by everything and you have to keep it moving and ignore them.
She's also a hypocrite. Offended at being compared with 'them', she then states that what he has said offends 'us'! That she cannot see this is amazing.

Your example is a case of the classic false assumption some people have that naming a characteristic is racism. It is not. Judging because of an irrelevant or unjustified characteristic can be racism if that characteristic is race related, otherwise it is prejudice.

Firstly, let me state that I agree with you. People of our generation are intellectually and morally crippled. They've been unexposed to a lot of hardship and forgot about the higher purpose that is in dealing with it.

I am Italian and some Asians women told me they struggle to distinguish Europeans because they all look the same to them. they are right, it's difficult for a foreigner to distinguish between an Italian and a Spanish person. it was actually interesting hearing it from someone

I think the main thing I notice is that spanish women often have an oblong face opposed to italians, but aside from that it's hard. Often I can't tell the difference. Usually it's more about the way they dress. I can recognize an Italian person from miles from the way they dress lol people constantly think I am polish, french, hungarian...they rarely guess I am italian. I don't take offense. I mean it's not offensive to begin with

I'm Asian (Korean), and I get asked all the time what I am because people can't tell, which is totally fine. It's not meant to hurt or degrade you. It's a simple question to understand you or your culture better. People need to stop being such spoiled, entitled little shits and realize there is actual racism being experienced in the world.

Yes! I grew up in S.F., in the Richmond District, a mixed salad of ethnicities with a variety of Asians. As a kid, I was always interested in the cultural distinctions between groups and over time I acquired the ability to observe subtle patterns in appearance that might indicate ethnicity. Instead of being offended by my guess, they were entertained by my curiosity and surprised by my frequency of guessing correctly. I would follow up by saying hello or using a phrase in their native language. This never offended anyone, and instead was met with a smile that opened the door to friendship - enduring friendships now many decades old. The best man in my wedding is half Chinese. Fast forward some years and my young blonde son was the ring bearer in his sister's wedding. At the altar, his blonde hair stood out like a soar thumb in a line up that was otherwise entirely Asian. 😄 To think, the beginning of our friendship and discovery of what would become my second family all started when I was 11, after I approached a kid in boy scouts and guessed his father was a serviceman and his mother Japanese. (She's Chinese, but met his father in Japan... Close enough!)
I'll never understand how she was offended. I might easily do the same thing with no intention beyond starting a friendly conversation, which I believe was his intention as well. What she did will probably change his attitude toward Asians. His caution will make him seem cold and unfriendly, which may be interpreted as racist by Asians meeting him in the future. These leaps to accusations of racism in the absence of racism only makes things worse. Plus, she blew an opportunity to reciprocate and inquire about his background - to learn and build another bridge between cultures. Damn shame.
I was married to a woman from Laos. And you are right. Koreans are the hardest to tell where they are from. Should be proud of that. It is only natural for a man dating an Asian to look and try to figure out where they are from. Which is the opposite of saying all Asians look alike.

As a white guy who lived in China for 10 years and took lots of taxis - I had this conversation every single day. They tried to guess where I was from.
Nothing offensive about that. They are trying to connect with you by asking about your culture. They usually guessed wrong…but instead of being offended, I took the opportunity to share culture with one another.
Same experience here. 😂 Where you come from? Followed by a wrong guess and the assumption that you are a teacher.
Every single day. Who cares? How else are people going to learn about different cultures than by asking questions? Curiosity is the opposite of racism.

I'm Hispanic and my Uber driver was from Iran, we talked about culture, food, where my parents are from, his home life, and how he had to leave his business and home behind because of the Stuff going on in Iran regarding women's rights he was afraid for his wife and they came to America, and now he's driving for Uber to make ends meet. We talked about football (soccer) and I ended up giving him a pair of football shoes I had in my luggage I gave him a hug, and wished him success. We're all humans just trying to survive out here.

Last Uber I took, my driver had an "accent"... I asked him where he was from. He said, "A place maybe you never heard of, Mombasa." I told him I have always wanted to go to Kenya. He was thrilled I knew of his home town and amazed that I wished to visit his country. We talked about The Big 5, the Maasai, their jewelry, the poverty in Mombasa, as well as Tanzania, Namibia, and Botswana. He was proud to talk about his heritage and delighted to meet someone who appreciated his culture.
This person was looking for a fight. She blew it.

yeah, most ppl are happy to talk about their homeland - myself included - ppl like her ruin interesting icebreaker conversations. i love leaning about other places from the perspectives of the ppl that are actually from there. i was chatting (gaming forum) with a pakistani guy the other day, and I guessed where he was from based on his name, which just happened to be a flower thats the main ingredient in my favourite perfume ❤ he was so happy i knew anything about his culture that wasnts... yknow, politics and sad stuff.

I joke around with an African lady and mentioned the name of two warring tribes in her country. She feigned ignorance the first day but when I pressed her on it she boisterously told me her father was very rich and they had a big house in the city and those ' people ' were way off in the country and were nobodies. All in good jest but it shows even touchy subjects can be handled lightly.

Illegal immigrants are one thing but people that come here legally wanting to better themselves and their life are fully welcomed in my eyes. The best restaurant I worked for was owned by a polish man and I’m so thankful to have experienced his culture. I’m so thankful to be living in the USA period because of how diverse it is. I'm a Brit in Japan, and yesterday I was cleaning my bike on my doorstep. A random guy comes up to me and asks me where I'm from, how long I've been in Japan, what Japanese food I like, what nationality my family is, and what passport I hold. He also told me that I'm a Christian. What do I do? Scream racism and get offended? In that case I'd be offended pretty much every time I stepped outside my house. People are curious, that's all.
That's the way people make friends, by asking about the person. Yes exactly, curiosity. Plus that's how we learn about other cultures too. Otherwise, we'll all roam around being ignorant. :)
Our family was stationed in Misawa for four years. We loved it. The locals were very helpful and were happy to try to work with us when we stumbled over the language. They appreciated that we tried to use the language, even if it meant using a phrase book, dictionary, and various gestures. They were just so happy to see people respecting their culture and trying to learn about it. Loved our time there.
I love how genetics combine. I like learning about people’s ancestral background, I find it fascinating. So far people have been proud of their heritage and are happy to share it with me. But I live in a small town with small town values.

I’m an ethnic Chinese Singaporean and have lived in Scotland for 6 years. I went to my local chippie and after placing my order the lady there said to me, while she was cooking, in her Scottish accent: “you have a strange accent! Where are you from?” I told her I’m from Singapore and she explained afterwards that while I looked Chinese, I did not sound Chinese, and was simply curious because she had never met a person like me before in all of her life making fish and chips at that store. She was very friendly and we had a nice conversation about what life in Scotland and Singapore was like for me. Nothing racist there!
I was just on a day tour in Scotland a week ago, and our tour guide was talking to my husband, myself (U.S.), and my Aunt who lives in Surrey, England. He was trying to guess where we were from based on our accents, and my Aunt's was completely throwing him off. Because while she has been living back in England for 7 years now, she moved to the states in her 30's and lived there for 30 years, so she had lost some of her accent. He was a lovely man who was just curious.
It makes me sad that the driver probably doesn't feel like he can ask this question any longer, he probably asked that question to everybody, enjoyed knowing where all his fares are from and what brought them to that particular city. A conversation that was once considered normal, polite, and expected when traveling abroad.

Considering the context of the video, your comment is fairly dismissive to bring up. On first glance, your comment has a lot to do with the experiences of the Asian in the video but looking deeper, it's quite different. Also, the experiences of those who emigrated later in life versus those who were born or emigrated earlier in their life tend to be much different.

I agree being sensitive is different. At least it used to mean that you were very emotional, empathetic, and feel things deeply and sensitive to others' emotions. So for example you may easily cry when you see someone else upset or watch a sad movie. Whereas some people who are not as sensitive don't cry easily, etc. It's a totally different thing just like they have appropriated the word "trigger" which is a mental health, trauma related thing, not just anything that piss you off. I'm an arab/Muslim and an uber driver was asking me about my hijab, the talib@n, !s!s etc. I was a bit shocked but I wasn't offended because he was an older white man and i assumed he probably never really met a arab/muslim and only saw us on the news. We had a really good conversation and I explained to him how not every Muslim supports these groups or are associated with them. He was very kind and open-minded. It's easy to get triggered, its hard to swallow you initial emotions and ACTUALLY talk about things.
❤ When ppl are from different countries they don't really know much about the different groups so when they meet someone who is actually from there they are able to ask about the different groups to better understand what's going on. When stuff is reported on news/media they just report on the current issue. They don't take time to explain the background of different groups and such. Every country is going to have different gangs, religious groups, ECT.

As a vegetarian for a decade at that point, I'd heard far less kind things - even cruel and threatening at times - directed towards me.
My seatmate struck up conversation with me (I'm of NW European origins, he of Indian origin), asking how I came to be vegetarian. He then shared with me that it is a feature of his culture and faith as a Sikh.
We had a wonderful conversation over the hours of the flight, celebrated our vegetarian meals, and talked more.
At the end of the flight, we shook hands and wished each other well and departed.
I would like to think my experience was not an aberration, but the norm among decent, civil people everywhere.

A true apology is not the words you use (ie I'm sorry) but the action to try and never repeat that original action again, otherwise it's like someone slapping you in the face, and saying sorry over and over again. How many times do you accept their apology before you realize they don't mean it? Forgive, change, remove yourself if need be, and move forwards. If you've done wrong, apologize and take the steps to make the positive changes you need to become a better person for yourself and for those around you, regardless if it's constant contact or a once off.

As an UBER driver, we are at a huge disadvantage. People do not realize that puttin a false accussation (or even low scores) just out of spite affect our work. If you get reported for sexual harrasement or something similar we could lose our account and the ability to continue working.

I hired a cab earlier today and the driver was an older Asian woman , I'm an older native American woman and I live in southeast Asia for some time back in the 80s , I asked her if she was from the Philippines , she smiled and began talking about Thai food and we had a wonderful conversation about Thai cooking which I absolutely loved .
there was not even a mention of racism both going and coming from my destination .

I’m German born and raised until 15 and I came to America and joined the military at 17 and over the years I’ve picked up a Southern accent and when ask if I’m from the South I tell them I’m German but never once did I feel offended or felt oppressed.

Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right. These days when someone says they are offended they believe they are in the right. A sad sad world, everyone loses their mind.
My wife and I went to South Korea for about a month once. Despite meeting literally thousands of Koreans, there were times I made a faux pas because I would reintroduce myself to someone I had already met because my brain itsnt well attuned to the differences in their faces. On the same token, many of the Koreans we met said that all of the white people looked basically the same and they had a hard time differentiating between us, and that they have the same issue with black faces. It's not racism, it's like speaking a language...it takes time and practice to become adept.
I had a Chinese guy (from China) tell me all black people look the same and I found it pretty funny.

Yep, Korean taxi drivers used to ask the same questions, just to have a conversation. Had pleasant small talks with them plenty times. I'm myself being Asian and it took half a year to remember my coworkers names and faces. And it was just the same for them with my friends. The beauty was that all of us were different and had so much fun getting to know each others culture ❤
I agree Asians look similar to Asians, Caucasian’s look similar to their kind, as well as Hispanics, and blacks. It’s not racism, it’s just facts.

Actually we need to stop caring if someone IS racist. Who cares. Racism is not illegal. Racism is simply a form of tribalism and therefor human nature. The notion that we can dictate the beliefs and opinions of others is quite silly. I dont care if someone chooses not to like any group. Because they have a right to their own opinion and often the stereotypes are true.
I just never take that claim seriously and automatically start calling out the accuser regardless, racism exist get over it.

The thing is - the fact that she didn't complain to the company to get him fired means nothing. She posted this video publicly for the world to see. Companies don't really need official complains to fire someone. If someone from Uber sees this video, they can very easily find this man. They will look into that woman's Uber history and see who the driver was that day. She makes it seem like she's so "generous" because she didn't complain to Uber, but in fact, she put this person in danger.

In world in which people post anything and everything for attention, without regard for the lives they destroy, yes she does need to complain directly to the company. If I ran a business I wouldn't take these whiny liars seriously unless they went through the trouble of direct contact. A review on their app or a freaking tag on the post. And if it's so terrifying doesn't she have a social warrior responsibility to make sure no other Asian woman sits in his car? Shouldn't she save them from the racist ASAP?

This made me tear up. As an Asian and immigrant who has strong accents, I feel for this driver and furious with this girl.

Truth is, we all look the same! There's only so much genetics to go around. Ever run into someone and think they look familiar to you? That happens all the time. was at an outdoor pool party in vegas at a nice venue. the hispanic bathroom guy that sells stuff asked if i wanted extra sunscreen and gave me a look and i died laughing. im a pasty mfer and my nose was torched. made a joke about how i basically reflect the sun out there ill be fine and had half the bathroom laughing. honestly theres a difference between obvious jokes and hatred.

I'm Asian (Filipino to be exact). I get asked the same way by Uber drivers who just want to engage in a conversation. I am sometimes mistaken to be a Mexican and I just smile and love it to be mistaken for another race. This woman must not have been raised as an Asian. Asians especially Filipinos are mostly friendly and respectful of others. This woman is not and is very rude and snotty. Gosh, there are just so many over-sensitive people nowadays.

I hate it when people ask me where I'm from. It's annoying and demeaning, and it makes me feel like I don't belong here, but I wouldn't go as far as calling it racist.
So she doesn't "feel comfortable" being in that car, but she's totally comfortable calling him a racist to his face. If I was with someone who I thought genuinely hated me for whatever reason, I wouldn't start provoking them just in case they were crazy and/or evil.

I worked with a South Korean lady who pointed out to me that her people were much better looking than Japanese, and on the other side of me worked a Chinese man who pointed out that his people were much more beautiful than Japanese or Koreans..I worked at a Japanese owned business in the USA. I think people have lost the ability to be present with whoever they’re speaking to. They instead act as if they are “performing” for an audience (i.e. the Internet). They lack the emotional intelligence to discern people’s intentions, so they rely on tweets & Instagram infographics to tell them how to perceive a situation, like this girl did.
She *was* moved by his begging. See how she started crying after leaving his car? She mistakenly attributes it to being angry, when it wasn’t her anger that moved her to tears, but the stress of creating a conflict without resolving it. She just lacked the maturity to pick up on that.

As a 70 year-old black man, this woman's accusation against her Uber driver offends me because it disrespects the harm caused by REAL racism--the kind that results in poverty, oppression, trauma, beatings, and murder. That worst that driver was guilty of was innocent ignorance. If she really wanted to be "empowered" she would have responded with tolerance, kindness, and humor. Only a narcissist would take a moment like that and blow it out of proportion and put a man and his families livelihood on the line if it will get her clicks and "You're so brave" comments. A none narcissist would consider the fact that he has a stranger in his car, its an awkward situation already, was probably trying to lighten the car ride with causal conversation. The man is obviously born in another country where he is likely not used to a culture who sees racism on their pancake mix. Only a narcissism would be incapable of empathizing with him instead of secretly recording him so you can look like a victim when you really weren't.
The thing that disturbs me the most about people getting offended is that the result is silence. People are afraid to offend. And then crazies can take over and do whatever the hell they want because no one will speak up. That’s how oppressive governments flourish. That’s where holocausts can happen.
