- SERIOUSLY FUNNY EP #05 - Today's episode I talk with Alan Averill, lead vocalist of Ireland's premiere heavy metal band Primordial. Primordial are one of heavy metals most original bands. Huge majestic soundscapes, imbibed with Alan's vocals both passionate and violent. Songs dealing with Ireland's often tragic past and what could be the modern worlds tragic future. BE WARNED, The beginning may be a little arduous if you don't want to listen to a couple of old blokes harping on about metal, but if gets into juicier territory as the podcasts goes on. Enjoy!

this is an oasis for metalheads. Thanks Steve ,keep it real man
Cheers for watching man. Hail…
Great interview, being a 53 year old Irishman from Wexford I can draw so many parallels with Alan, going to Dublin in the 80's to the Sound Cellar to buy records and McGonagles and Bruxelles, good times... still a full on metalhead to this day.
Great band, great guy.
Good man Steve, I've had loads of pints and a couple of fights in Bruxelles myself, thanks for interviewing Alan, cheers
Hahaha! These old school stories are hilarious!
Cool, I guess they will bore some who are not so metal…Cheers
Terrible certainty is a classic.
fuck, that was refreshing, thank you
You toured with and drummed for Primordial? That's so fucking awesome! Speaking of tour, when's *your* next Australian tour? Whenever it is, don't neglect to come up north, even if it's "hot as fucking shit!" Love you, mate! Tour dates, please!! 👍
Citizens of nowhere - yep, brilliant!
Indeed….Citizens of nowhere is a great description.
Alan is the best!
If anyone wants a better snare sound than St.Anger, Bathory - Octagon is the tits!
Alan is quite an articulate speaker (for an Irishman, ha!) so is always enjoyable to listen to.
Very enjoyable chat 🤘
"I probably could but it's that head on her..."
Made me legitimately laugh out loud!! 😆
Great interview (more of an intimate chat, really).
Alan's reasons for choosing "liberty" over "freedom" are valid, too. Freedom is entirely subjective... You want to be free? Free to, or free from? You want to be free to play Cannibal Corpse on full volume at 4am, while your neighbours want to be free from having to hear it.
Good point…..cheers for watching.
34:10 that's so right, and that's mainly the reason why I don't consider myself a metalhead anymore. Today is just narcissism and just focus on making a product, everyone seems so technically anal. By far too many bands with nothing to say and too many bands in general.
Talking about Neurosis, I did a mistake of taking acid before going to see them, that was a difficult evening haha...
I got to the end of this talk, even though I'm not that much into metal anymore, listening to people reminiscing about the old days does caress me with nostalgia.
I'm in a band since 2002, we've played one gig outside Ireland and only have 2 albums. I guess I have to consider the band surviving that long it's greatest success.
Can't teach NPC just program. Sentient non-cowards are rare. So thanks for this!
Cheers…
Primordial is legit one of the best bands ever.
Hail Vomiter!
I'm glad Alan has no time for sad boy riffs. This was amazing. Thank you. Keep going!
Cheers from England ❤
56:00 Thanks for history lesson and for not simplifing how WW1 started :)
Damn this is awesome, I was obsessed with Primordial back in the day.
Cheers man….Hail.
Bahahah that Greta, lord of the rings joke is gold!
‘Nothing new under the sun’ and ‘All Against All’ 💯 🔥
❤️to both of you
A philosophical breakdown of WASP and Manowar, brilliant!
That was excellent 🤘
Flower Metal -
C U Next Tuesday 😂
I caught up with Matt Coffey about 2 years ago Steve, and him and his lady came and surprised me by turning up to my Solo gig in Broulee on the South Coast.Matt lives in Batemans Bay.
Korn in tracksuit pants! 😂
Yep, I nod to younger guys in metal shirts these days and they look at me as if I ran over their fucken cat! 😂
2:15 what happened in Whyalla? 🤔
It’s where Destroyer 666 originally come from….
Yep, no way that Steve would’ve been playing soccer on a gaming platform! 😂
This is like sitting in the pub with my mates just chatting metal for hours 🤣💜
Steve - you have accumulated some really cool friends ❤
Yeah, plenty of good moments in Metallica’s stuff on their albums since the early 90’s… but no good full albums, in my opinion.
Nope no good full ones…..shame really. Cheers for watching.
...I was 7 in '99
Jesus fuckin wept.
STEVEN! I am so glad that you are in what seems to be a much better place than when I saw you in Melbourne in 2015 during the Melbourne comedy festival (I could be off a few years there)
Me and my mates came up to say g'day after the show, and after you guessed we were in a prog metal band (I wish), we went on our merry way, cheeks still sore from laughing our asses off, (not laughing on the inside) from the only show we wanted to catch at the festival that year
I still to this day use your metaphor surrounding depression, and seeing your take on depression helped me claw my way tooth and nail to the other side of my own fray with the black dog. So I wanted to say thank you for showing me it was ok to talk about that shite.
Loving the podcasts sir, Hope to see you on stage again soon. Take care of yourself man🤟🤟🤟
Thanks for the comment man. Yeah the black dog is indeed a mongrel. Glad you got through his vice like grip. Stay strong brother…Hail.
Keep up the great work.
Loving it!
Cheers mate
Seriously Excellent.
Takes me back to my 80's/90's days in bands...
Thanks Steve,
Peace to all,
Metal Rules...
Cheers mate…Hail
The anagram of St Anger is Angster. Fact.
Is Conor still in Sweden? I remember ye from the mid 90's
He is still in Sweden. I was in contact with him a year ago and he vanished again…bummer. I like him. Great bloke. Cheers for tuning in…
I've been following your comedy too since early on. Glad to see you back in full swing brother. Missed you there for a while. Horns UP!🤘
Steve can you ask Justin Hawkins from the Darkness to come on? It would be hilarious.
That could be interesting. I don’t know much about his band. But he is quite the character.
Didn't realise Dave Cullen was a metal head?
