At 66 years old now this song reminds me of all the wonderful and sometimes crazy people I met on surfing journeys from the age of 13 years old until my health recently let me down.🏄♀️🏄♀️ I weep with joy.
It's 1990. I'm cycling alone through Connemara in the the low clouds. I come to a downhill, the sun breaks through the clouds and I see the glistening sea. And the Waterboys on the old walkman, guiding me down past the trickling streams. To the sea near Galway. Thanks 'boys! Memory of a lifetime. They say Ireland's got the low clouds, but really it's just closer to heaven. Must get back.
this is the first time i've listened to this beautiful song since my dad hung himself in his garage 25 days ago,,,, i called in work yesterday, went to the coast with my brother, surfed 2-3 foot barrels,,,,thank you The Waterboys, thank you.
Having endured some of the darkest hours in my life, this song has always been the light. Thank you, Waterboys. You have no idea what your music has done for me and what it continues to do! Cheers! Drew from nyc
It's amazing how few people other than surfers have seen this movie. I am a filmmaker and I can testify that his is an excellent movie... so well made. Bull Riders from Kansas would love it. It should have been nominated for an Oscar.
RIDING GIANTS brought me here & this documentation really touched me! 🏄♂️ 🤙🏼 With kindest regards and greetings to all true nice people outta there who experienced the freedom of a great thing like skateboarding 🛹, surfing 🏄 & all the other sports where no depressing coach or authority tells you what you have to do‼️✌🏼🙏
ive got to say that this documentry and song got me to start surfing. ive been surfing for a full year now and this is the greatest gift ive ever gotten.
This is as good as TH-cam gets. It was a great movie. Genuinely great. But to have that movie summarize with this song, over that imagery, made it one of the eternal movie experiences ever.Don't know whether the sequences on this clip were put together by the filmmakers, or arranged by parkhill62, but THANKS. The middle section honoring the fallen was very moving. Just great...
Most videos enlarged to full screen usually deliver watered down (excuse pun) visions....NOT THIS ONE....AWESOME, POWERFUL, MIND BLOWING footage....with moving lyrics and marvelous music.....killer combos.... Whew.....I gotta go and call my travel agent.... Thanks for the tour
I love this song. it reminds me of my backpack trip to australia...I cried out loud listening to this song on my way back home to brazil, thinking about all my friends I met there and things we lived together, lol. I won't probably see them again but this song keeps the dream alive! amazing...
this song was played at Rebbecca Burkes funeral, she was the most beutifull flower in the whole of galway, at sweet 16, strange, same birthday as me 16/10/1969 , beside her Joe Seal, and beside them my Dad, God bless them all!
Just watched this movie, and it was fan-bloody tastic. I had to look up this song... and here it is. Time to crank up the volume and scare the neighbors. Waterboys....thankyou.
Thank you so much for these lines. It made me feel very emotional.I've never read Ulysses before, but I will.I love mythology coz it's like a guide which helps me to understand the life. The power of myth is one of my favorite books.I love traveling cuz it's how I feel I'm alive, tasting all the possibilities n discovering/learning much more about myself. When I'm not traveling I try to run away from the routine doing things that give me pleasure, such as surfing, running and swimming.I Love the life
FABULOUS SONG!! .. Mike Scott` s voice STILL goes right down my spine .....lyrics as great as the song is ...and then this AWESOME clip , KILLER WAVES !!! as they say on Maui ( in rememberance of 1 of the islands greatest longboard KINGS ) >>> EDDY WOULD GO!!!!!!! THNX for this TOP VIDEO!!!
The song is from the closing credits of the film. I just tried to fit the music with scenes from the rest of the movie. Thanks for everyone`s comments.
When this song gets down into the farthest parts of your soul, you get to a state of ecstasy and communion with Earth that just cannot be equalled. Find this a lot with Mike Scott's music!
The Hawaiian guy was Duke Kahanamoku, legendary surfer from the early part of the 20th Century. He won five Olympic medals in swimming, and was a record holder in the 200 meter freestyle. In 1925 he saved eight capsized fishermen from drowning in California. He is credited with spreading the sport of surfing throughout the world. What an example of how to live a life!
The original album the song is from is magnificent..."don't bang the drum " is awesome, "be my enemy" is great, 'this is the sea" is the title cut, but the best by far is "the whole of the moon".
Lyrics: These things you keep You'd better throw them away You wanna turn your back On your soulless days Once you were tethered And now you are free Once you were tethered Well now you are free That was the river This is the sea! Woooo! Now if you're feelin' weary If you've been alone too long Maybe you've been suffering from A few too many Plans that have gone wrong And you're trying to remember How fine your life used to be Running around banging your drum Like it's 1973 Well that was the river This is the sea! Wooo! Now you say you've got trouble You say you've got pain You say've got nothing left to believe in Nothing to hold on to Nothing to trust Nothing but chains You're scouring your conscience Raking through your memories Scouring your conscience Raking through your memories But that was the river This is the sea yeah! Now I can see you wavering As you try to decide You've got a war in your head And it's tearing you up inside You're trying to make sense Of something that you just can't see Trying to make sense now And you know you once held the key But that was the river And this is the sea! Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah! Now I hear there's a train It's coming on down the line It's yours if you hurry You've got still enough time And you don't need no ticket And you don't pay no fee Now you don't need no ticket You don't pay no fee Because that was the river And this is the sea! That was the river This is the sea! That was the river This is the sea! That was the river the river the river the river And this the sea! Behold the sea!
esta musica tem o poder de relaxar, acalmar, excelente para um fim de tarde... por do sol... a melhor musica do album com o mesmo nome... 5 estrelas Mike..
4:03, Subadai, thief and archer. "Give me food for strength, so when the wolves come I might die in battle instead of starvation". Conan The Barbarian, 1982.
"That was the river, this is the sea" - the song is supposed to be comforting - never mind what you've been through, you'll come to a place full of peace and understanding, a place of tranquility. It's just my opinion but it doesn't go well with the images of huge, dark, ominous waves and the possibility that one of those surfers will get swallowed up by them! I love this song too much in its entirety to simply associate the sea with big waves!
to my big mate n big bro raymy...i love you n will never forget you are watching over all of us....love you!!!!!! still finding buckie lids down the back of my radiator you feckin torag!!!! x x x x mwah x x x
C3cover, the song is not just about surfing, but if you saw the documentary "Riding Giants," you'd perhaps get some sense that surfing (for some people, at least) is about more than just standing on a long, flattened-out phallus, waiting to get pulverized by white water.
Yeah, inside all of us...Thanks for the reminder. I've been fighting a lot for a long time- trying to feed both wolves- neither win or lose- such a waste of energy. Where is this story from- is there a specific source? Thanks- and thanks to the Waterboys!
This is impressionant! ¡I love The Waterboys! (well, my favorite song, is Fisherman Blues, but...) But, when I say "impressionant", I say it about the many much giant sea waves. ¿How many meters high are them?. I calculate 12 or 14 at least...
"Now I hear there's a WAVE Its coming on down the line Its yours if you hurry You've got still enough time And you dont need no ticket And you dont pay no fee No you dont need no ticket You dont pay no fee"
Who doesn´t saw the movie, can´t understand to this (s)well... And this great song on the end of the movie, was like: Shit, why I wasn´t on Hawaii at these great times?...
Where can I find these interviews with: Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez and Dave Kalama? I am looking for a clip with one of these interview and good b-roll around the theme of riding the momentum of the big waves.
inspired two comments, can you tell me who wrote them? "youth, the penny that bought delight of the moon" "today's no, is today's maybe and tomorrow's yes" let me know - cheers from canada

Great movie. I used to live in Redondo Beach, Calif., but the surfing waves were nothing like the kind depicted in Riding Giants.
Yesterday I quited my job after working for 8 years, I'll go my own way now... thanks Stevebillie

It's only fitting for an amazing movie to end with an amazing song.
my deepest respect for these guys.
Lyrics:
These things you keep
You'd better throw them away
You wanna turn your back
On your soulless days
Once you were tethered
And now you are free
Once you were tethered
Well now you are free
That was the river
This is the sea!
Woooo!
Now if you're feelin' weary
If you've been alone too long
Maybe you've been suffering from
A few too many
Plans that have gone wrong
And you're trying to remember
How fine your life used to be
Running around banging your drum
Like it's 1973
Well that was the river
This is the sea!
Wooo!
Now you say you've got trouble
You say you've got pain
You say've got nothing left to believe in
Nothing to hold on to
Nothing to trust
Nothing but chains
You're scouring your conscience
Raking through your memories
Scouring your conscience
Raking through your memories
But that was the river
This is the sea yeah!
Now I can see you wavering
As you try to decide
You've got a war in your head
And it's tearing you up inside
You're trying to make sense
Of something that you just can't see
Trying to make sense now
And you know you once held the key
But that was the river
And this is the sea!
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!
Now I hear there's a train
It's coming on down the line
It's yours if you hurry
You've got still enough time
And you don't need no ticket
And you don't pay no fee
Now you don't need no ticket
You don't pay no fee
Because that was the river
And this is the sea!
That was the river
This is the sea!
That was the river
This is the sea!
That was the river the river the river the river
And this the sea!
Behold the sea!
