I wasn't thrown off by this album when it came out. It seemed like a perfectly natural progression from Youthanasia. That run in the 90s was just epic. Rust in Peace to Countdown to Extinction to Youthanasia to Cryptic Writings. All knock outs. (We don't talk about Risk.)

Don't forget that most of these bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax etc that made trash and speed metal poplular, grew up on hard rock and earlier metal so it's not unusual for them to go back to their roots at times. Also, it's interesting that younger people like yourself and other reactors are so thrown off when a band changes up things withing a song. The use of dynamics, tempo change, varied instrumentation and other methods were common throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s in various styles of music. This is one of the things that kept it so fresh and interesting and it lacks in todays music. They are like plot twists or new character introductions in movies. Embrace creativity!

  • @Sandman60077

According to Dave Ellefson the bassist, in his book he said the record label and producer for this album and the next one were trying to push the band into more of a radio friendly pop sound to try and attract more people that weren't really into metal music. And even though they went reluctantly went along with it, they weren't happy about it. Except for the guitarist Friedman who wanted the band to experiment with a different sound.

Record label or not, this was definitely influenced by Marty. Sadly, he still wound up leaving soon after the Risk album and going to Japan. Even though Megadeth was more commercial during the Freidman years (which metalheads tend to call selling out), the guitar playing was top notch. Die-hard Megadeth fans point to earlier albums, but the sales on Youthanasia and Countdown to Extinction cannot be ignored.

A lot of rock/metal bands over the decades were "lured" by the possibility of making a 'hit' record that appealed outside their fanbase... Sometimes it worked; most times, it was a failure. Kiss recorded 2 disco albums in 1979/ '80... then a trippy orchestral album in 1981...
Metallica went from riffing metal in 1991 to plodding 'alternative' and southern rock in 1996/ '97... Def Leppard went 'pop' in 1996 and 2002... U2 also recorded a 'pop' album in 1997 that was a misstep... etc.
In the 90's, Megadeth was one of the few metal bands that actually saw sales increase from the 80's... but Dave Mustaine had this 'rivalry' w/ Metallica and wanted their level of success... their 1994 album 'Youthanasia' was an attempt to streamline their sound, but it sold platinum (Metallica's 'black album had sold 9 million copies at that point) ... After taking a break, Megadeth returned in 1997 w/ the album 'Cryptic writings'... Mustaine got Foreigner's manager Bud Prager on board, and decided to aim for an album w/ both speed metal and radio-friendly tracks. 'Trust' was a radio-friendly one and became a #1 single on rock radio... the album still barely sold 1 million copies (Metallica's 'Load' album in 1996 sold 4 million copies) which was still big, but not good enough for Mustaine.
Megadeth went even further into a pop direction w/ their 1999 album 'Risk' and that barely sold a half million copies in the US... it also marked the end for longtime members Nick Menza (drums) & Marty Friedman (lead guitar) in Megadeth...

Megadeth is Dave Mustaine. That’s it. It’s his band. He started it with Ellefson, but now has about as many ex-band members to fill an orchestra. He’s all that’s left now, but continues to pick some of the best talent to represent his Megadeth branding.
Also, the Megadeth album “The System Has Failed” was originally intended to be a Dave Mustaine labeled solo project. He brought in ex-Megadeth lead guitarist Chris Poland for solos only on most tracks, and other session musicians like Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Jimmie Lee Sloas on bass. Later, Mustaine eventually gave up on the solo project idea, branding the album a Megadeth release. Which means that Megadeth *is* and has always been Dave Mustaine’s solo project.

It's basically a disstrack, it's very good and I believe you would like it since you've heard songs from Peace sells album that Chris Poland made with Mustaine before getting kicked out after peace sells!

Megadeth was made by the original guitarist from Metalia Dave Mustaine. Dave created what we know today as Death Metal by playing really fast in a deep dark way. Even the lead singer of Metalica admitted that was true.

I know this album gets pooped on by Megadeath fans but I always liked it. Maybe it's because I'm not a die hard fan of theirs. Think this was when Dave was getting sober or after he'd been sober for a few. Many of the songs deal with addict issues on this album. This one is the trust issues, Use the Man is about the drug taking over, Almost Honest is about how we trick ourselves into thinking lies are truth which continues to feed the addiction. As a former addict, I used this album big time in 2006 when I put that shit away and just loved songs like this that talked about what I was struggling with at that time.

Megadeth went hard rock radio friendly for a little bit during the '90s. Still kicked ass! Then they went back to metal during the 2000s. I still like their stuff during the change. Way better than Metallica's Load and Reload stuff.
Yall need to listen to "Dread and the Fugitive Mind" and "Dialect Chaos/This Day We Fight!" Great songs! When Megadeth returned to their thrash metal roots.

Megadeth went through a period just like Metallica did where they experimented with making themselves more accessible to mainstream rock music. The narrower the mind of some of their fans the more angry they became with this shift in style. I will full well admit to at the time I was much more narrow minded about music than I am now. My wife actually calls me the "Music Snob" so not sure what that says about me.
However, years later I started to catch on more to this period of Megadeth. I still love the older, faster, and aggressive music better though.
I would love to see you guys react to some songs off of the RISK album. This album was SLAMMED when it came out by just about everyone. Out of their more commercial period, the three records they made that I consider their most commercial started with "Youthanasia" then they did "Cryptic Writings" and the terrible reception it got, "RISK" was the last attempts by Megadeth to try and be more commercial sounding. I'm going to go say it though, when it came out I wasn't a very big fan of it, but of the three commercial records they made, RISK was not that bad.Check out a couple of these songs and see what you think.
    "Breadline"
    "Prince of Darkness"
    "Ecstasy"
    "Wanderlust"

I still dig RISK. even though it's least favorite of theirs. but it's so totally different is what makes it cool. same kinda goes for LOAD.

    • @itsalwayssomething7490
      @itsalwayssomething7490 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I am a diehard Megadeth fan, seen them 22 times since 87, met Dave a few times. I never not loved them, so they never went away like they did for some people.
Even though Risk was a risk, I still ended up loving it. It's a fantastically musical album and showcases the musicianship this band had. If it wasn't labeled Megadeth, it would have been more accepted as a rock/pop album. So many great songs.
But, it would have been a disappointment if that's the way they stayed from then on. I still love the years when Megadeth went more commercial, but I always prefer the more aggresive progressive thrash side. I'm glad that have such a large array music, because it never got stale for me. Each album is different. They will always be my favorite band.

Thank you for branching out and listening to something other than the mainstream or popular hits! There is a lot more to discover about so many bands. And frankly, it gets tiresome seeing the same songs repeated over and over on every reaction channel. Especially when its a song that will likely surprise and circumvent expectations of well-known bands and genres. Kudos to you!

This came out the same year as Metallica's Reload. Metal fans were looking around concerned at the shift away from metal across the board. IMO this is when classic metal kind of gave way to Nu Metal and the likes of Korn and Linkin Park.

One thing I can say about this band, they continue to surprise you. Definetly went more radio-friendly during the ninetines, but they maintained a high level of quality throughout, all of their career really, 35 years and counting. Can't say about that many artist/bands, I love all of their cd's really! The band is all about class (music-wise)!

Another great example of why I prefer Megadeth over Metallica. Dave mustaine the singer for Megadeth started off as the guitar player for Metallica but got kicked out of the band because he drank and kept beating up the guys in Metallica, LOL. Many of the songs on Metallica's first album were written by Dave Mustaine.

This album is just Dave Mustaine doing what he does. Meaning, he’s just showing his chops. Dave’s biggest influences, and really the music he grew up with, was straight up 60s and 70s rock! He always sited AC/DC, Alice Cooper, and Deep Purple as huge influences on his music. Dave is a basically a musical genius. He never holds back, but he doesn’t try to do too much. He writes really kick ass hard rock and heavy metal. Legendary band!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Edit: I highly recommend you react to the song Tornado Of Souls off of the Rust In Piece album. Dave at his best! That entire fucking album is a masterpiece! One of the best heavy metal albums, EVER! Bar None!! 💪🏼💪🏼
