Not underrated but one of their worst. Only RISK is worse. Cryptic Writings is one of the most uninspired and boring metal albums ever. FFF fantastic? It is a musical equivalent of waving the white flag. This is the sound of Megadeth giving up.

I wasn't thrown off by this album when it came out. It seemed like a perfectly natural progression from Youthanasia. That run in the 90s was just epic. Rust in Peace to Countdown to Extinction to Youthanasia to Cryptic Writings. All knock outs. (We don't talk about Risk.)

According to Dave Ellefson the bassist, in his book he said the record label and producer for this album and the next one were trying to push the band into more of a radio friendly pop sound to try and attract more people that weren't really into metal music. And even though they went reluctantly went along with it, they weren't happy about it. Except for the guitarist Friedman who wanted the band to experiment with a different sound.

Record label or not, this was definitely influenced by Marty. Sadly, he still wound up leaving soon after the Risk album and going to Japan. Even though Megadeth was more commercial during the Freidman years (which metalheads tend to call selling out), the guitar playing was top notch. Die-hard Megadeth fans point to earlier albums, but the sales on Youthanasia and Countdown to Extinction cannot be ignored.

Don't forget that most of these bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax etc that made trash and speed metal poplular, grew up on hard rock and earlier metal so it's not unusual for them to go back to their roots at times. Also, it's interesting that younger people like yourself and other reactors are so thrown off when a band changes up things withing a song. The use of dynamics, tempo change, varied instrumentation and other methods were common throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s in various styles of music. This is one of the things that kept it so fresh and interesting and it lacks in todays music. They are like plot twists or new character introductions in movies. Embrace creativity!

A lot of rock/metal bands over the decades were "lured" by the possibility of making a 'hit' record that appealed outside their fanbase... Sometimes it worked; most times, it was a failure. Kiss recorded 2 disco albums in 1979/ '80... then a trippy orchestral album in 1981...
Metallica went from riffing metal in 1991 to plodding 'alternative' and southern rock in 1996/ '97... Def Leppard went 'pop' in 1996 and 2002... U2 also recorded a 'pop' album in 1997 that was a misstep... etc.
In the 90's, Megadeth was one of the few metal bands that actually saw sales increase from the 80's... but Dave Mustaine had this 'rivalry' w/ Metallica and wanted their level of success... their 1994 album 'Youthanasia' was an attempt to streamline their sound, but it sold platinum (Metallica's 'black album had sold 9 million copies at that point) ... After taking a break, Megadeth returned in 1997 w/ the album 'Cryptic writings'... Mustaine got Foreigner's manager Bud Prager on board, and decided to aim for an album w/ both speed metal and radio-friendly tracks. 'Trust' was a radio-friendly one and became a #1 single on rock radio... the album still barely sold 1 million copies (Metallica's 'Load' album in 1996 sold 4 million copies) which was still big, but not good enough for Mustaine.
Megadeth went even further into a pop direction w/ their 1999 album 'Risk' and that barely sold a half million copies in the US... it also marked the end for longtime members Nick Menza (drums) & Marty Friedman (lead guitar) in Megadeth...

Megadeth is Dave Mustaine. That’s it. It’s his band. He started it with Ellefson, but now has about as many ex-band members to fill an orchestra. He’s all that’s left now, but continues to pick some of the best talent to represent his Megadeth branding.
Also, the Megadeth album “The System Has Failed” was originally intended to be a Dave Mustaine labeled solo project. He brought in ex-Megadeth lead guitarist Chris Poland for solos only on most tracks, and other session musicians like Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Jimmie Lee Sloas on bass. Later, Mustaine eventually gave up on the solo project idea, branding the album a Megadeth release. Which means that Megadeth *is* and has always been Dave Mustaine’s solo project.

If y'all are going down the Megadeth rabbit hole you oughtta check out "Ashes In Your Mouth". Either the album version off of Countdown To Extinction or the live version from Rude Awakenings are excellent choices. You won't be disappointed.

fun fact: death was already taken as a band name so they had to go with something else. all members are playing drums on this track even though it sounds like bass and guitar. its never been done before and i doubt itll be replicated again. big 60's band all the way into the late 60's. david ford actually taught geroge harrison how to slide on a guitar.

This album is just Dave Mustaine doing what he does. Meaning, he’s just showing his chops. Dave’s biggest influences, and really the music he grew up with, was straight up 60s and 70s rock! He always sited AC/DC, Alice Cooper, and Deep Purple as huge influences on his music. Dave is a basically a musical genius. He never holds back, but he doesn’t try to do too much. He writes really kick ass hard rock and heavy metal. Legendary band!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Edit: I highly recommend you react to the song Tornado Of Souls off of the Rust In Piece album. Dave at his best! That entire fucking album is a masterpiece! One of the best heavy metal albums, EVER! Bar None!! 💪🏼💪🏼

Megadeth went hard rock radio friendly for a little bit during the '90s. Still kicked ass! Then they went back to metal during the 2000s. I still like their stuff during the change. Way better than Metallica's Load and Reload stuff.
Yall need to listen to "Dread and the Fugitive Mind" and "Dialect Chaos/This Day We Fight!" Great songs! When Megadeth returned to their thrash metal roots.

Risk is very under-rated. If it didn't have the Megadeth label on it, it would be considered a really great album.
