Hey, Welcome to the OFD Watch Channel. My name is Aron Dunlap, and I’m nuts about watches. What’s OFD you ask? Well, one of my best friends coined this term. It stands for “Only F@#*ing Dunlap” (sorry kids!!) due to some of the ridiculous things I can come up with, including watch collecting.
I have loved watches for years, but in the last few years really got into the collecting and studying aspect. I mainly buy Seiko and Orient watches, but I love everything out there!! (Omega, Oris, Rolex, Squale, Timex, Casio, Steinhart….and on and on and on)

sadly this is a very bad test, that proves nothing this tool will only test thermal conductivity now you would think that would be enough but no if you use the same tool on the "sapphire" on an iPhone it will show as sapphire on the tool. But it scratches at a MoHs level 6 the same as glass, if it was sapphire it should not scratch until 9 HUGE difference, this thing will tell you it is sapphire even if it is not. A lot of company's will basically just sprinkle in aluminum oxide dust (what sapphire is made from) into glass, but unless that aluminium oxide is pure no glass no silica and has time to crystallize then it is not sapphire it has no property's of sapphire, it is amorphous which means it has no crystal structure which means it is in no way shape or form even similar to sapphire. But legally they can call it sapphire glass even though it has none of the property's of sapphire at all. If you want to do a real test to find out you would need a set of MoHs picks, or if that is a bit much a set is not cheap buy a cheap quartz crystal off of amazon or eBay if it can scratch it it is 100% not sapphire.

I bought mine from Aliexpress for about $10. The dial to select the bars is actually more for the sound than the exact calibration for it to work properly. When powered on just wait for the "lamp on ready ok" button to be lit and make sure your finger is touching the metal part on the back to close the circuit.

Hey mate. Nice video, although there's something you should know. Diamond testers (like the one you have) don't measure the "hardness" of materials, but rather measures other properties of the material and compare them with the ones of an actual diamond. I think the particular one you've got is based on thermal conductivity (meaning measuring how heat transfers through the material), so you're measuring just this single property. I'm guessing you're getting results very different/similar to those of diamonds because of the variety of materials, coatings, widths, etc.

Looking at my ever-increasing watch collection (I stopped counting at 70) I wonder if I should invest in such a thermal conductivity tester to find out who fooled me with their specifications?
I tried the water droplet test - not reliable for greasy or coated surfaces.
So far the 'ping' test (snipping your fingernail against the surface) did the best job for me:
high pitch sounds for minerals, almost none for sapphire. But then: a thick plastic glass does not ring either, but may scratch immediately. And a "scratch test" is not an option..
To my astonishment some extremely cheap China watches (like your GuanQins, Nesun etc.) appear to use sapphire, my mid 1970s Citizen 8110A as well? I do not know the price difference of mineral vs sapphire, but I doubt that it is used on budget watches.
So maybe I should shell out a few bucks at AliExpress for such a heat tester after all?
Cool to see it in action on watch glasses, thanks!

Anybody who watches this video please do not think that a diamond selector too is going to tell you if it's Sapphire or not it tests a thermal reading which means it detects heat it does not tell you if it's a real sapphire it doesn't test the hardness scale and it does not test the refraction index which can tell you the difference between a fake Sapphire and a real sapphire or fake diamond and a real diamond or a moissanite as far as thermal goes a lab grown Sapphire conducts heat the same way lab grown diamonds have the same refractive index they pass thermal testers(diamonds selector ll) and look just like a diamond because they are in fact a diamond do not let anybody tell you that a lab grown diamond or a lab grown Sapphire or lab grown anything else isn't real it technically is real it just isn't natural 🤷 therefore the value goes down if you are going to buy anything to test diamonds sapphires rubies and emeralds you should buy all the tools in order to make sure you have what you have such as a refractometers to see refraction indexes electrical diamond testers to test electrical conductivity buy a loop to see the inclusions and read up on how to check natural from lab grown such as inclusions such but putting a thermal tester on a watch face is not going to tell you if it's really a sapphire Crystal or not🤦🤦🤦

Valid points, but i think in the case of watch sapphires the majority of cases wont be too far off. Using that tool on second hand watches would definitely give me more certainty than tapping the glass or dribbling water on it.

It doesn't matter if it's lab growing or if it's a natural sapphire. They are the same hardness and that's all we really care about for the glass on the watch.

Why on that document? Shall we consider this fact cycologically?

You provided a few false information . This tester has nothing to do with hardness. It works based on thermal conductivity. You also said that sapphire crystal is in the diamond hardness range. Not even close. You should really educate yourself before you make a video.

Man are you deliberately trying to mislead people or do you really know how these testers actually work?I have this tester and ivhave genuine sapphires ..they only work on diamonds

No need for that testing tool just stick it to your forehead lol If it's ice cold it means it's sapphire.
