Supremely talented siblings! One can only wonder what more they would have given the world had Karen not passed away so early in her life.

She was voted top drummer by Rolling Stone magazine in 1975. She drummed as well as she sang. She was a gift from God.

In reality it was Playboy (who at the time sponsored the Playboy Jazz Festival) and she came in 10. 1 ahead of John Bonham and a ahead of a number of other great drummers.

I am very new to your channel and also from Belgium....but born in the USA (Southern California). You caught my attention with your Home Free videos and of course I have been going through your catalog of tunes for a few days now and happened upon this most recent one. Karen Carpenter was special in so many ways and yet her story is so tragic. She was a bulemic - this the reason she is so thin and she never could recover from it. It wouldn't end well for her as she took her own life. Her brother Richard was also as gifted as she was. Their music is timeless and absolutely beautiful. I will never forget either of them or their music. Great reaction too. Oh if you teach me how to speak Nederlands better I will help you with your English lol!!!!

Thanks so much for being here!
It is a heartbreaking story. In this video she seemed genuinely happy. I had not seen her smile like that in other video's.
      Bedankt om te kijken! 😄

Karen was never more happier than when she was behind those drums. She considered herself a drummer who just happened to sing. Karen was so very special. She was loved by millions and is so very much missed. Thank you, Susan for requesting this, and thank you, Saeed for reacting to it. Much love to you and your family ❤️ 🫂

Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. You can see the joy in her face in this video. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music.

As far as she started out she was a drummer that sang. As opposed to a singer that could drum. She’s in her element here.

The story behind the "Lead Sister" T-shirt comes from a concert tour they performed in Japan in 1974. The Japanese press wrote a review of one of heir concerts, and the author got his English translation messed up, as he intended to describe Karen as the band's lead singer, but the translation came out "sister". When the Carpenters read the newspaper review, they all laughed and Karen said they should get a bunch of T-shirts printed up with Lead Sister on it for future concerts.

One of the highlights and unforgettable events of my life was seeing the Carpenters in concert in 1976. I can still remember Karen doing the drum solo, racing from one set to another. I hadn't listened to much on the radio in the early 70's because I didn't like the "heavy metal", but one day there was this beautiful voice and wonderful harmony playing from my radio. I loved the Carpenters then and they are still my favorite of all time.

I think this is the best one, because we all know she’s an incredible vocalist but also an amazing drummer. But Richard gets some flowers here which is awesome as well, he is often under rated. But he is an amazing pianist and song writer. They both get all the props from me!!
Great reaction Saeed, Thank you. ❤

Yeah, and the irony is, I don't understand why she was forced to front the band. They were fine with Karen on the drums and singing lead. And there's a good chance that she would still be alive today had TPTB left her alone and let her do what she wanted to do.

Karen was my inspiration to play drums as a 14 year old girl. Saw them many times live in concert and always LOVED seeing Karen behind her drums. Fun fact....the other drummer was Cubby O'Brian, who was one of the original Mousketeers of the Mickey Mouse Club! He became their co-drummer for live shows.

She actually never wanted to be the singer (lead sister), she just wanted to bang the drums, but Richard knew her voice had to be heard. I wouldn't be surprised if her up-front role played a part in her eating disorder, but in any case her gifts to music just keep on giving almost 50 years later.

Yes, Richard sang lead on a few of their recordings, particularly earlier on. And in 1987, four years after Karen's passing, Richard put out a solo album called Time, on most of which he's lead singer (there are tracks with guest vocals by Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield and Scott Grimes). Much of that project can be heard here on TH-cam.

It was Playboy (who at the time sponsored the Playboy Jazz Festival) and she came in 10. 1 ahead of John Bonham and a ahead of a number of other great drummers. In 1965 (Karen was 15) they were 2/3 of the Dick Carpenter Trio with Richard on keyboard and this brilliant drummer named Karen on drums (did not sing yet) and Wes Jacobs on bass or tuba. They won the 1966 Hollywood Bowl Battle of the bands and in 1968 they won Your Al American College Show. Bill Sissoyev had replaces Wes on bass. Their are 5 recordins at th-cam.com/play/PLA3id59yQgEra6kOn1qSV-ZPQRR6kvw8q.html 2 from the 1966 win Iced tea and Girl from Ipanema and 3 other jazz selections. the 1968 win can be found at th-cam.com/video/3Cz60nGaopM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=BillyRees By 68 she was singing too.

She was so happy behind the drums, she was the drummer in their group, but Richard had to talk her and made a deal when and where she could sat the drums because audience is requesting her to stand at front because she is the "voice",they could not see her coz she is only 5'4 feet tall...Karen is not so happy when they took away her in drums...this is her first passion, not singing...you can't go wrong with Karen that's why until now she is my lady...I CAUGHT BETWEEN GOODBYE AND I LOVE YOU will be the next...pls!!i'm asking all the patrion of Saeed, please tell him,he will react in this Karen's song because this is one of my mother fav.song of Karen...my mother is suffering of LUNG CANCER,so pls!!!can i have a fav.?to all who read this comment...thank you....from Philippines.

I've always believed if they had let her stay behind her drums and sing, she might still be here. She felt too exposed out front, and the insensitive remarks in the news about the chubby sister set her off on the eating disorder. Very tragic.

Her true love was the drums. She was a teenage jazz drumming phenom who would have gone a long way. Unfortunately, you can see the effects of anorexia, which ultimately took her life.

And in the seventies you were criticized for liking them because they weren’t “COOL” ….. I still blame A&M Records for that …. A great drummer and one of the best voices ever and your marketing had them standing there holding daisy’s ….. but time has has taken care of that ….. their music will live on forever.
