I Swapped The Wheels On My Tesla Model S To Martian Wheels And Couldn't Be Happier!

  • Watch as I swap my T-Sportline 20" wheels (square stance all 4 are 285/35/20 with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires) to my new Martian 19" Wheels with OEM Continental All Season Tires (285/40/19” rears and 255/45/19” fronts). Beyond the fact that I love the look of the Martian MW05’s I was curious about this setups efficiency vs my 20” T-Sportlines. So, I set out on a 62 Mile mixed driving Loop where I test efficiency on both. First I ran the 20’s. Then I swapped the wheels. The. I attempted to run the same run again, but that first attempt with the Martians was flawed after a wrong turn. So I ran the loop again a week later where I had consistent weather with temps around mid-60’s F. Both days had clear skies. The 62 mile loop included a mix of highway and local roads. Check out the video to see my impressions of my new Martians, as well as learn if there was any efficiency gains as well in my unscientific fun efficiency test.

    I wonder if you could fit 18” on a pre-2021 Model S. Will they fir over the brake calipers? I want a large sidewall for a cushy/soft ride. Don’t are about max G-force grip in cornering on track. Daily driver.

    Another great video Dave. I know all these roads well. I definitely would choose the look over the efficiency. EV’s are not all about the efficiency, they are a car an an extension or a way to express your personality. Efficiency is nice, but car culture is way more than just driving around an appliance.

    Excellent video also, note The beginning of your video shows how many Tesla stalls are a typical location. ElectrifyAmerica definitely needs to build more of this size along East Coast

    Love your new Martian wheels! Now you need to let Colton do your detailing - like what he did to Kyle's Model S. Would love to see what his products do on your light paint!👍🏼

    The tire dealer should have a value for the circumference of the tire. It might be expressed in revolutions per mile or some similar weird measure.
    That and some math will tell you the net height difference between the two tire+wheel combinations

    In very rough numbers, mechanical drag dominates until over 45 miles per hour and absolutely drops off over 55 MPH. So any aerodynamic consideration should be above 55 MPH when aerodynamic drag dominates.

    You swapped TSportline 20" Uberturbines wheels for the Martian 19" 5 spoke wheels, this comparison is pointless - the wheels are apples to oranges, not even comparable.

      19 inch is more efficient than 20, at least at lower speeds. He specifically said it's not scientific, but he did get the results you would expect from lowering rim size.

    Why even bother about saving a few pennies in efficiency when you have just spent the thick end of $3000 on wheels - plus another circa $1000 on new tyres?

    • @UnseenSpirit
      @UnseenSpirit ปีที่แล้ว

      Although Tesla cars are the most effecient EV's, I don't think the buyers have them purely for saving money. In fact they are very expensive and it will takes years to make your money back compared to a cheaper car...

    • @Hitstirrer
      @Hitstirrer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UnseenSpirit Presactly so. Which is why I queried the concept of testing any change in efficiency caused by changing the wheels/tyres. A futile test. With any change and subsequent $ and cent difference being lost in the noise of the massive sums spent on such cars and their aftermarket goodies.

    • @ChuckvdL
      @ChuckvdL ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there’s an underlying assumption you will resell the old wheels and tires and at least partially recoup that cost.
      There are also scenarios in places where it snows to have two sets of wheels, to easily change between summer and snow tires without paying to have tires removed and remounted twice a year.
      So there are reasons to get new wheels, and efficiency may be a factor for someone buying new wheels for whatever reason.

    • @adamlee5504
      @adamlee5504 ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing with the staggered wheels is the inability to rotate tires front to back. Maybe, it can be done side to side but I am not familiar with the direction of the continental tires.

    • @ChuckvdL
      @ChuckvdL ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adamlee5504only old bias ply tires should be rotated side to side. Radials should not change sides

      Some would call it “subtle elegance”. Not everyone wants a Shelby GT look that screams “I am a macho, all must look at me!”. Some of us like the sub 3sec 0-60 performance in a sleeper. To each their own.
