  • This week's shop update will show some progress on the interior walls that I decided to hire out for painting. I'm also announcing the purchase of another lathe, one that's much bigger than what I have and that will go into the new shop.

    Wise moves on the painters and the riggers. Having the ability to do something yourself doesn't mean you HAVE TO do it yourself.

    You can put some flexible self leveling concrete sealant in those control joints to keep them from filling up with chips and being difficult to sweep.

    • @PeterTX
      @PeterTX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Any hot chips or fragments will fall and melt into the sealant though. Ask me how I know… ;)

      I prefer 2 part hard epoxy. Helps with pallet Jack's to.
      If the grooves are deep I have dropped rebar down in the gap to help take up the volume. Back them rebar was cheaper then epoxy.

      Glue down some heavy rope that fits in the groove. It's replaceable.

    Been watching your channel for years now, and always enjoy it. Don't often comment but felt compelled to this time with your anticipatory observation about positioning the new lathe above the "control" joint. This is not a joint as such, but a cut made into the concrete to reduce the possibility of an unsightly crack forming randomly across the floor as the concrete sets off. Any shrinkage forces will tend to crack under the cut because the slab is slightly thinner here. Loading the floor in the area around a "control" cut will not affect things now the floor has well a truly gone off. Anyway, good luck with the workshop build, and installation of the equipment. Looking forward to keeping up with all of this.

    Adam I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am to see all your hard work finally paying off. You have worked so hard to get to this point and I know that your father and grandfather are looking down so proud of you. You deserve everything good coming your way! You're a great person an extremely good at what you do. I really appreciate the content you put out for us to enjoy.

    Hi Adam, I don't know what length of work you are expecting to be able to accommodate, but it strikes me that putting either end of your new lathe near a wall will restrict your capacity and also make access to the tailstock difficult, I'd be tempted to allow at least room for a chain lift at that end so the tailstock could be swopped out for a fixed steady on long overhanging work pieces. Exciting times watching you set up a new facility. May I wish you both a happy new year.

    For cleaning up more easily, let me recommend a filet between wall and floor. A straight baseboard makes a sharp right-angle corner that embeds dust, swarf, etc. I made mine with a piece of 3" PVC pipe as a molding tool (1.5" radius). A broom cleared anything out with no corner to trap stuff. It also keeps welding sparks from laying against the wall. Use mortar or plaster, and paint it with whatever you use to seal the floor.

    Control joint won’t be an issue. They just control where any crack will be. As long as the floor is reinforced, should be 100% fine.

    • @sksinmn
      @sksinmn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I second Rob H. Concrete shrinks as it cures and it will crack. The control joints control where the cracks occur. The rule is 2 times the thickness of the slab expressed in feet... a 12" slab would need joints every 24 ft or so. What is more important is an engineered section, based on your site conditions, of a well compacted base of mineral soils. You should have no worries at all. I've been enjoying this shop build from the beginning. Excited to see you actually producing product in there soon.

    • @mitchkronowit3633
      @mitchkronowit3633 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Control joints don’t prevent cracks. They just dictate where the crack occurs.

    Consider a wainscoting on the wall. Make it gray to a height about 5 or 6 feet. It will keep the lower wall from getting soiled, greasy, dusty....

  • @andrewgray1949
    @andrewgray1949 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    See if you can borrow a projector - the type they use on laptops for conference presentations etc...
    Point at the wall in various locations with pictures of engineers tools or whatever, then you can trace with a pencil directly onto the wall to end up with a mural with 8' tap holders, Huge Micrometers, Vices and the like.
    Was going to wish you happy new year, but I guess its "Happy New Lathe" 🎈🎉🎊

    I would two tone the walls. White on the upper 3/4ths and a mid tone on the lower. This gives the brightness of the white from the lights above and is easier on the eyes where you look and film. Consider darkening the lower portion, either a grey, light blue or beige. Also, the darker lower area doesn't show dirt as much. It works REALLY well.

  • @AzraelsTear
    @AzraelsTear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Expansion joints in concrete wont matter, the slab has continuous rebar running both ways, even across the joints. They are pretty much just as strong and distribute the load across the whole slab, you shouldn't have any issues with the location, some good leveling pads under the machine and good to go! Congrats on the new (to you) machine!! Cant wait to see it run...

    A roll of masking tape and some big cardboard boxes can make good tools for laying out machinery placements and verifying the space and access around the machine in the shop. It's a lot easier to move tape and cardboard than an 11kip lathe.

    Eggshell covers more imperfections but semi-gloss stays cleaner and is easier to clean when dirty. White is a good color for reflecting light and keeping the room light enough to easily work in.

    The 60Hz line current and the 60shutter recording were back-beating against each other creating banding. I didnt see any banding with your 120shutter, but you may find that your signal may look noisy in low light conditions. If you have a shutter that isnt a multiple of 60, and lower than 120, that should work well in low light.
