      @@SilfenPath Sure thing. One thing I haven't been able to find out (even after contacting Apple support) is whether or not they still have optical TOSLINK out in the headphone jack of this Mac Pro. Any chance you know?

      @@crisfehr Yep, most older macs had this type of optical output built into the audio jack. I contacted Apple support and they told me that the new Mac Pro does indeed have TOSLINK out. I'll verify this on Monday when mine arrives.

    Thank you so much for this video. As a “prosumer” wedding photographer and content creator looking to possibly invest in the Mac Pro this really helped me narrow down what I was going to get in the system. I think the biggest thing you pointed out was the processor which as you said it makes sense to upgrade to at least the 12 core. I also currently own a Radeon VII which I’ll probably throw into the Mac Pro as well and just go with the lowers graphics option they provide as that’ll be more than enough for my needs. Thanks again!

    If you're looking for aliens 😂 👾
    Seriously though, i think it's a good video. Personally i would avoid the 8-/12-core. Just get a 16-core (or more if you need it for your app(s)). Less then 16-cores isn't really of these times anymore, (when talking about this specific Mac). When it comes to the GPU, i would go with the W5700X, it's a great GPU, if needed go with dual ones. To save cost i got just one of them but i'm pushing the limits of it. You can always add one later but it costs more when adding later. 😩
    When it comes to storage, i would go with as much as you can. In the past, to save on cost, i always picked the standard (256GB/512GB). However, this is really not enough. And sure, you can buy external SSD's or just have PCI-E option. I would still recommend that you at least consider 2TB or 4TB. I got 8TB and it's really nice not having to worry about storage. You will always have Apps, photo's, music, video's, document's etc... So choose wisely!
    The ram, haaa, the infamous ram! Honestly, yes, you can just buy it third party. On the other hand, i went with 96GB from the start and i have more then enough with that! If you are someone that uses more and are using much more pro apps at the same time, you can probably spend the money... 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😝In that case go with 192GB/384GB...
    The Apple burner card is something you will have to decide yourself, do you use pro res (raw) or not?
    Again, great video. But i thought a little update to this was needed. Certainly because the iMac Pro (with the new M1 chips) are absolutely obsolete right now!

LIterally making the order in a day or two! Can't wait to try this beast out. Was gonna wait for the new m1x chips but we got funding to upgrade and I was told I needed to have my decision by this week or else we lose funding and having a mac pro that I can upgrade later on was a no brainer (especially since it's not out of pocket money)

      @SilfenPath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol. True. By the way - if you have to have it now - it’s understandable. Better now than lose funding. However WWDC is on June 7 - and we should know if any MacPros are coming soon then.
      Maybe an M1X based one or from what I’m hearing - a newer Intel Xeon proc potentially.
      Either way - unless you’re going for something extreme (core count-wise) the diff between your 12 core and a new 12 core probably want be mind blowing. It’s a gen update. Maybe a few 100 GHz higher per core. It’d matter more if you had/needed a 24 core processor or some such.
      Unless they bring PCIe-4 - which would be a decent bump in bandwidth on that bus.

    Hello there,
    I was wondering is there is perfect specs for mac pro if i want to edit Red Komodo Raw files using the Final Cut pro, i would appreciate your advice

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Red raw is not too bad. Especially Komodo. I have 16 core with Vega II and W5700X. I didn’t realize but since I moved my XDR display to the side all this time my other 5k monitor was connected to W5700X while I was editing red footage so it seems it can run it just fine.
      Do note than new Red plugins (Red-cine-x pro) for OSX support Metal - so they’ll utilize it (I.e. you get GPU acceleration) while editing.
      With all that said - 16 core would be recommended to be 100% safe. I am pretty confident 12 core could push it as well though. 64GB RAM min - more the merrier. I have 384gb.
      Now do note I am just guessing here but with some insight as to what my machine can do with its specs and extrapolating if it could do with less.
      However, you could go to an apple store, download my free Komodo footage from silfenpath.com/downloads/komodo6k-samples/ and plug it right into final cut on the MacPro they have on display. Or on an iMac and test right there :)
      I do plan to do full workflow video for Komodo on Mac Pro - and at that time I’ll try to test with Vega II alone and with W5700X alone to see if each in solo mode can push them pixels.
      Hope this helps a bit. Thanks.

    Do you feel the M1 Mac Pro is here
    ... and what shift would it mean: lower RAM needs
    or big price drop in Intel Mac Pro ? Sooner the better IMO

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they’ll be upgrading MacPro lineup after all other hardware is on Apple silicon. While all MacPro owners would be mad and would rejoice at the same time if they did it now - it won’t be the case most likely.
      Their money makers (outside of mobile devices) are laptops and iMacs. That’s where they’ll push Apple Silicon first especially because of the chip shortage. There’s only so much fabs can make, and they are all at capacity now - China, Taiwan, everywhere and Apple will want each one of those new shiny chips in new affordable machines so they can sell fast, rather than in super pricy MacPro which doesn’t sell in high volume.
      As for MacPro - if Apple starts innovating again, they may/should give us an M1/M1X MPX module for current Mac Pros. This way they could sell the whole stockpile of Intel MacPros (and continue selling them for awhile), and current owners (like me) would love to pay $1000 (price of a MacBook Air with M1 chip) for a card (with one or two) we could put into our MacPros to accelerate workloads or run OSX directly from.
      Sadly - that’s quite a leap for Apple nowadays. Embracing standard they invented (like MPX) and giving us awesome stuff.
      So there you have it. What I believe will happen, and what I wish it did :)
      As for price drop on MacPros - don’t see that coming up for awhile. They don’t sell enough to justify it and simply - they don’t care.
      My $.02 :)

    • @globehb7645

      @@SilfenPath I agree ... but they should despite themselves; but the M1 chip wouldn’t work on an Intel motherboard.

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t mean they should put the M1 chip on an Intel motherboard. I meant they put it on an MPX module or PCI Express cars (like their afterburner accelerator) and we with Intel Macs could use the chip through that. I’m sure they can code OSX to see M1 chip through PCIe just like it sees Afterburner accelerator and GPUs. Best of both worlds IMO.

    • @globehb7645
      @globehb7645 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SilfenPath is that possible ?

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why wouldn’t it be? They make hardware and the software. Their OS already works on M1 silicon. Apple’s afterburner is pretty much Apple Silicon which accelerated ProRes encode/decode through PCIe.
      This new card could be M1 chip on a PCIe card, and os could use it to accelerate Metal workloads or anything silicon chip can do. Heck - we could run Silicon-only apps on Intel macs with this.
      But will they do this - probably not. We’ll just have to wait a few years for a full-on Apple Silicon Mac Pro. Though when it comes it’ll be a beast. They could put 2 or even 4 x MX chips in it for some insane performance.

      Honestly, on Windows at least, mixing consumer and pro AMD GPUs is not quite recommended. On OSX it seems to work ok especially since the two are pretty much the same thing. • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I can tell you should be able to fit 4 without issues. Length should never be a problem in this machine. The two double thick cards (mpx modules) are as big as any 4 regular GPUs.

    • @koriecull
      @koriecull 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Silfen Path Thanks! What about power cables?

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is something that has to really be tested with 4 non-Apple-MPX (regular) GPUs to be certain. But, the belkin power cable set comes with 4 GPU (8 pin to 8 pin) power cables, so you “should” be able to power 4 GPUs. If your GPUs have 2 x 6 or 8 pin power ports on them you could buy a regular GPU cable splitter and split each cable at the end from one 6 or 8 pin to two. I haven’t done this on a Mac Pro and can’t tell you for certain if the power is adequate, but on my PC - four GPU power cables, with splitter at the end, can power 4 GPUs with my 1600W PSU. The real question here is why do you need this? What GPUs do you intend to put that would perform better than what Apple has to offer anyways? Their MPX module GPUs are one of the most powerful today (at least for OSX).

    • @koriecull
      @koriecull 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SilfenPath Ok, so the MPX module is great and if I had the cash; £10800, I would get it haha, but I don't. I need the RAW GPU power for the upcoming release of Octane X which utilises Apple's METAL API in Cinema 4D. In reality, I need as many GPU's as possible, the more GPU's I have, the faster my render times will be. At my old studio, we had a PC with x4 GTX TITANS in and that was kicking 1 frame out in 1 min. So let's say you have 24 frames per second... that's 24 mins for a tiny portion of a CGI scene. Currently, I have an iMac with an external GPU with a 1080 Ti running on High Sierra, the last OS to support CUDA.

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea. I wish Apple and Nvidia would make up already. It’s hurting us - the consumers, as always. Whatever GPU you want to use - make sure it supports Metal. Not all AMD do it seems, though most newer ones (Navi) should. But when it comes to price - New Titans cost as much as MPX modules. So I see that either way you have to shell out some money. Even a 2680Ti can cost as much as a single module MPX. Which four do you plan on putting into your Mac?

    My main usage (with my Mac Pro 5,1 at 3.33ghz 6 core and 48GB RAM my average CPU usage is around 20% and average RAM usage 30%) :
    *Internet surfing with 30+ tabs
    *5-6 messenger programs
    *Software that's not too heavy
    *OBS Studio
    *Microsoft Office
    *Virtual login for work
    *open up 2-3 light game software

    *Python (statistical analysis)
    *Boot Camp gaming (World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, etc.)
    *Final Cut Pro
    *Logic Pro
    *Apple Photos
    12 Core CPU - No question there.
    1) 32GB RAM - Can I just buy 2 more slots for an additional 8GB each and work fine although they're not Apple products? (assuming its the same DDR4 and same Hz)
    2) 1TB or 2TB SSD - Still torn apart. I thought it was going to be like Mac Pro 5,1 where you can move your main storage around. But, since this is embedded like MacBook's although I do think 1TB could be golden, for future proof 2TB might be better. But it's so expensive....!
    3) 5700XT - I am planning to use Boot Camp 70-80% of the time, so it looks like I can add additional GPU (Nvidia) unlike 5,1!
    4) Afterburner - I am planning to use Final Cut Pro, and I have Sony A7S, Sony Action Camera 1080p, and iPhone Xs. Would I need an Afterburner card (based on my config right now) if I want my video quality to be like MKBHD or Dave3D or even yours? I noticed that my quality was always bad (sorry I'm a newbie when it comes to video editing). Not sure if my hardware will likely be plenty enough.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) For RAM I'd suggest you check out this video of mine: th-cam.com/video/jIXQGJvpMVA/w-d-xo.html ... Yes you can add 2 more 8GB DIMMs and get 48GB (which is the config I'd recommend for you)... Ideally I do not like to mix and match RAM manufacturers, since CAS timings and such may differ, but since a lot of people have been replacing all of their Apple RAM with another one - I am sure you can fund 2 x 8GB Apple OEM DIMMs on eBay for cheap. That way you'll have identical RAM to 32GB in new Mac.
      2) I never have enough storage. I'd go with 2. However, if Apple RAM is too pricy for you, go with 1, and simply buy a PCIe to NVMe card, and slot in a 2TB Samsung Pro or Evo for less, later on when you need to.
      3) I think you meant to say W5700X (Apple's AMD GPU) ... It's not actually quite the same as 5700XT FYI ... I'd personally stay from 5700XT in MacPro .. I know a lot of people use them and are happy, but W5700X is a bit better card IMHO ... I tried making a video on 5700XT - and it flopped. I just had issues with it, Fans wouldn't spin enough to cool it in OSX, it'd crash my machine, etc. Stick w/ W5700X.
      4) You do not need an Afterburner. The only thing this will help with if your native media is in ProRes format. Doubt your Sony records in ProRes (though I may be wrong), but regardless, Mac Pro is so fast that for what you're doing - you do not nee it.
      4.5) Video quality depends on the camera (and even more on the light you shine at the scene)... Well lit scenes look good even on cheaper cameras, but more expensive ones can deal better with harsh conditions.
      MKBHD uses a $50K+ Red Monstro for his videos, so if you want THAT good of a quality - you gotta use something insane. He records in 8K or 6K and downsamples to 4K for youtube upload. The sensors on those cameras record so much data, RAW, that when video is made smaller and then compressed it looks buttery smooth.
      I use Canon EOS R and am super happy with it, much more than I was with my Panasonic GH5. I'd recommend it very much...
      A trick you can do is also to shoot in 1080p, but make your video timeline in 4K - and publish your video as 4k video even though it was filmed in 1080p. On TH-cam - in some instances (like when filming with Canon R) this turns out into a really good looking video....
      Main thing is - keep on experimenting... I still wish my videos looked better, but I'm getting there... Key always is the LIGHT. If you don't have expensive lights, film by your window. Nothing is as good as nice soft natural light ;)
      Hope this helps.

      In the video I believe I mention that if you are going with a base 8 core - might as well get a Mac book pro or an iMac / iMacPro. So I’d recommend getting at least a 12 core right away otherwise you are overpaying for what you’re getting (much more than we all are either way).

      @@SilfenPath Thanks for the fast reply, I just received my 8 core version last week and when I edit my images through Lightroom and Photoshop the highest percentage i can use was 80%, so I don't know if its worth it for me to pay the extra $1000, and I do like those pcie slots in the Mac Pro that's why I didn't go with the iMac/iMac Pro...

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It always depends on the workload. If you mostly edit photos - yea 8 core is fine. If you’re pushing through some videos - 12 core would do much better. Only reason I don’t recommend 8 core is because Mac Book Pro is pretty much as fast as that. But I get it with PCIe slots. That’s why I have a MacPro and every single one is in use hehe :)

    Hi Silfen, if one purchases the 16-core Mac Pro with single Radeon Pro Vega II Duo
    , can another Radeon Pro Vega II Duo
    card be added to connect future Apple Pro Display XDR's?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rodney. Yep, you can do that. I got a single Vega II (non duo), for example, and have added an extra W5700X in my case for extra monitors and ports. If you add another Duo, you can interconnect them with a bridge for even more performance. In my case - I really just wanted extra thunderbolt ports more than anything :) However, some time next year I’m sure we’ll see RDNA2 based GPUs from Apple and AMD / which should be even faster.
      Only other thing worth noting is that some apps do not know how to use multi GPUs properly (i.e. you won’t get double performance). In most cases - apps will use GPU that’s attached to the monitor they are being displayed on.
      Hope this helps.

      @@SilfenPath Awesome - look forward to it! Also, in addition to DSC, the 5700X's NAVI architecture will supposedly allow for hardware accelerated H.265/HEVC transcoding up to 4K60...which is something the Vega's do not offer, and unsure whether they can be upgraded to do so. Assuming that's tests out as true, for video editors, the 5700X's look like a great price/performance point for the Mac Pro.

    Hi, can I check the Core and the RAM of the 2019 Mac Pro I’m about to buy please... If you see something wrong with the cores and RAM I’ve chosen then can you let me know ASAP please
    2019 Mac Pro
    3.5GHz 8‑core Intel Xeon W processor Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
    48GB (6x8GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
    Radeon Pro Vega II with 32GB of HBM2 memory
    8TB SSD storage
    Stainless steel frame with feet
    To use for…
    Basically I’m disabled so my Mac has been my biggest tool for everything really so “Up Until Now“ I have always gone for the Mac Pro with the max configurations as being max config it will last me years longer and I’m a high end Mac user.
    I use Photoshop - EverWeb - Final Cut Pro X - Logic Pro X - I’m in a rock band and whatever I make on videos / music / designs is always on the highest quality settings with no compromises.
    I use 2 Display Monitors too.
    with Logic Pro X I have a very simple setup I have a UBS Lead which plugs in to Shure Mics I record one thing at a time, easy. But I need POWER to do things and Input/export long complicated tracks fast :) … Soon I’ll be buy this for Logic Po X www.scan.co.uk/products/scarlett-2i2-3rd-gen-interface-usb-type-c-192-khz-24-bit-2-mic-pres-2-2-analogue-i-o
    with Final Cut Pro X its simple I just record vids and gigs on my iPhone 11 Pro Max in 4K 60fps then import the long 4K vid into it to edit everything on my Mac Pro. But I need POWER to do things and Input/export long complicated vids fast :)
    For fun I watch a ton of iTunes Movies and iTunes Shows which I download on 4 massive hard drives, I never stream as my broadband speed is awful as I live in a blackspot area etc.... Apart from that I’m a massive gamer I play World Of Warcraft - Warcraft 3 Reforged - Diablo 3 and soon Diablo 4 - Elder Scrolls Online - Observer - Layers Of Fear - and soon probably Lord of the Rings and Frostpunk when it comes out and hopefully Assassin's Creed Valhalla.... At present I have very high end Mid 2010 Mac Pro and I play all those games on medium to highest possible settings. I would love to record my gameplay but at the moment I can’t as whenever I try the recording always comes out jerky and never smooth even on the lowest settings... I never use Bootcamp as I can’t stand Windows.

      Kain, I somehow completely missed your commend and I am sorry for that... It did not show up in my iPhone app, and I only saw it when I logged in via the Web!
      I sincerely hope this is not way too late of a reply :-(
      Here are my thoughts about your proposed config:
      If your videos are from iPhone in 4K, Vega II is an overkill for this ... It'll game decently well, but W5700X games just about as good, and is almost as fast in a lot of tasks, so if I were you I would maybe save the money on GPU a bit and get a faster CPU ...
      Here's my video on Vega II vs W5700X so you can make your own decision: th-cam.com/video/4xFEtegvA1Y/w-d-xo.html
      Vega II is $2,400, and W5700X is a $600 add-on over 580X. That's a LOT of money if all you do video-wise (edit iPhone videos) and play a few not-so-demanding games.
      8-core xeon is very *underwhelming*... As I say in my video, if this is what you want to get - then just go with a MacBook Pro instead ...
      But - with the money you can save on not getting Vega II (but W5700X instead), you can use it to get a 16-core Intel Xeon W which you will be ridiculously happy with FOR A LONG WHILE. You said you want your machine to last - this is the CPU to get. Even if you get a 12-core, it's much, much better than 8-core option.
      Even if by now you got your own config, it's still a great machine (especially with a super fast Vega II), but really the CPU would be the only upgrade I'd consider in it ...
      Thanks and sorry for such a long delay :(
