The near future; humanity has been all but destroyed by a mutated fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh-eating “hungries”. Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects.
At an army base in rural England, this group of unique children are being studied, subjected to cruel experiments by biologist Dr. Caldwell. Despite having been infected with the zombie pathogen that has decimated the world, these children retain normal thoughts and emotions. And while still being subject to the craving for human flesh that marks the disease these second- generation “hungries” are able to think and feel making them a vital resource in the search for a cure.
The children attend school lessons daily, guarded by the ever watchful Sergeant Parks. But one little girl, Melanie, stands out from the rest. Melanie is special. She excels in the classroom, is inquisitive, imaginative and loves her favourite teacher Miss Justineau.
When the base falls, Melanie escapes along with Miss Justineau, Sergeant Parks and Dr. Caldwell. Against the backdrop of a blighted Britain, Melanie must discover what she is and ultimately decide both her own future and that of the human race.

I picked up the book not even knowing it was about "zombies." The book was amazing... and terrifying. In my opinion it's the most plausible "zombie" story I've ever heard.

I'd say go get a copy. It's really good. The writer did a good job in making the book consistently dark and depressing from the first page to the last.

Only one question: why is Melanie black and Justineau white? It's the other way around in the book... In fact, the opening of the book is "Her name is Melanie, which in greek means dark. But she thinks the name doesn't fit her as she's really pale"
Why does it matter... The Parks guy has a huge scar on his face in the book but he doesn't here.

harlemboi2855 Parks' scar is not really important. Instead, i find quite stupid changing the color of the skin of both of them. I could understand from the point of view that the movie system needs more representation for the black community. In the other hand, Justineau is not just a marginal character it would have counted anyway imho.
Plus: Caldwell wants just to cut open Melanie, why the hell she says "you are our best hope" like she's talking to a kid? Caldwell always talk to her as "Test subject one" lol

In general, I don't like the trailer, I don't think is going to be a good movie :/ all the kids they look just normal, in the book is described that they look like hungries, the difference is in their behavior

As many as the directors need there to be.
The thing is, "best selling" anything is very.... biased, make a quick reaserch, and you will find what you need.
it’s an irresponsibly used term, but technically correct most of the time. they’re usually referring to like, “the best selling book (by this author)” they just leave out the part in parentheses.
It also depends on what and where the book is selling. It could be a New York Times bestselling or a bestselling in the Self Help category. It could also be on Amazon's bestsellers list.

The book is fantastic - if you like zombies/horror read it
It tells the story from the perspective of the little girl which lends the horror a very particular viewpoint of innocence
Hopefully they've done it justice, looks ok - don't want 'just another zombie movie' as this could be thoughtful, clever and viscerally horrible if they get the balance of storytelling vs horror right

They took us to a local factory before filming for all the zombie make up and stuff.
The film was filmed in a derelict Hospital in local town and also Birmingham. They gave us lunch and it took about 10 hrs for the scenes with the dog when it is startled. It was really surreal because they played the film in the Cinema I work at which was right at the back of the actual hospital. I didn't take the zomb make up off on way home and this couple with a dog walked by and was like holy $hit lol whats happened to you.
Really enjoyed it on the day and got about £80 for it.

I'm gonna take a guess going off what they said in the trailer that these kids are infected but they aren't going full zombie like teh adults all have done so they keep them in a prison and study/test them then the prison gets hit by a huge wave of zombies and the one girl saves one of the women and they think since she's the most human acting they could use her to figure out a cure for everybody or something.

I'M IMPRESSED. The casting is super on point and that last scene, damn. This book from the first page to the last was made to be adapted. Still has one of the best endings of any zombie genre book / movie / series I've ever read.

This looks awesome! The book was brilliant, still in pristine condition and still hoping that I can get my copy signed some day. It's nice to see that film makers have obviously taken their time with this movie adaptation, Melanie was a kick-ass character in the book. So it will be interesting to see how they are compared to the big screen and the novel.
This is an excellent movie. And the girl who plays the role is phenomenal. It's a really different look at this kind of movie genre.

The book is amazing. Hannah from Yogscast recommended it and I couldnt put it down. If you enjoyed The Last of Us, then you need to read this. Its awesome.
This film has been in the back of my mind for years
I JUST finished reading the book (Which I picked up thanks to seeing this trailer) and I must say, it was fantastic, and I'm excited to see the movie. It's such a refreshing take on a zombie story, and one of the most emotional stories I've ever read. Part of it could stem from the fact I'm a preschool teacher, but it's heart-wrenching and bittersweet nonetheless.
I find it kind of odd they made Melanie black and Justineau white, especially since Melanie and the other children are all supposed to be very pale, but oh well. The only thing I'm really worried about is the gore. I can about it fine, but actually seeing it is another story. I still plan on seeing it in theaters though!
To anybody interested, I highly suggest getting the book! Those tend to have way more detail than the movies anyway. ;)
"Very pale" doesn't mean "white." People of colour can get pale, too, and she is very clearly described as a black girl in the book. First line about how Melanie means "the black girl," even though she's very pale. That doesn't mean she's white--she's just light skinned, but she's black nonetheless.

Her name is Melanie, which she thinks is ironic because she is pale white. Later they strapped her down and shave off her long blonde hair. She also is in is intrigued by the contrast between her skin and her very dark teacher.

@@davidh8924 I think this is one of the few adaptions where race kind of does matter. I think Melanie being white with a name that means Dark/Black and the adjacent story of Helen who is black conveys/foreshadows a key theme of the book. Not everything is as Black and White as it seems (Hungries and Humans)

based on this trailer I would strongly recommend you reading the book first. Same for the Girl on the Train!
This was a great zombie flick. A different concept from all of the other "undead" movies. Two 👍👍 up!
The reason why it wasnt showing up before is because this movie wasnt released in the US, only the UK in 2016. Now Netflix released in its platform, that's why it's just now showing. It's called The Girl with all the gifts, and it's based on a really good book.

I wish they didn't reverse the race though. Melanie (the kid) was described on the book as "bony white" and like "snow white", while Ms Justineau (the teacher) was "dark-brown like the bark of the tree".

Why do you care? *All* the stories are about bony, super pale, fragile hero. Tired of the trope. Snow and.. tree bark. Hard eyeroll.
I actually prefer the colored actor more, she’s a great actor and was really good for this part, not all books and movies tend to be the same or as accurate to each other.
i think they went through something lik 500 child actors before they found one that could actually play the role. i think they went for talent over accuracy.
I agree, I would have preferred Melanie and Ms. Justineau play their respected racial roles as portrayed in the book.
BUT that’s the thing with these people who don’t respect the author’s vision 😒
