Truly one of the worst takes I’ve ever heard from Jake. Bret sold every punch he gave and every punch he received like it was ending his life. He took all those chest first buckle bombs like a champ. He made every second he was out there feel like it was real. Rarified air and a 1%er all time. His look, his gear, his move set, his passion could be felt with everything he did.

As I said, it's just jealousy dude, I can appreciate Dibiase wanting to stay neutral here about it but he was still part of the WWE then, especially when Bret had his run in 1994. People talk about Bret's interviews being dull, I don't think they look at the context of it though, Bret's character was a no nonsense "ring general" who felt he was the best, period, so why wouldn't his interviews portray that, how silly would it have looked if Bret, made alot of jokes and was silly in his interviews, it wouldn't have fit the character. His character was serious and so his interviews were serious to match his character, the same can't be said about Michaels who obviously portrayed a totally different character.
As I said, Roberts as gifted as he was in ring psychology and interviews and his ability to work, he never really had any titles, not in his WWE runs and very few if any main events, so if it isn't jealousy and just an "observation", alright, he's entitled to his opinion but it sure comes off as jealousy, I'm js.

Survivor Series 1990- Dream Team vs Team Million Dollar Team. Debut of The Undertaker. Ted and Bret are the last remaining guys for both teams. You can feel the tension of both guys and Bret's selling and ring psychology was next level. On top of all that the day before..Bret's brother Dean Hart passed away from a heart attack.

I was about to comment just on that. The end of that watch once it got down to Brett, hammer and Dibiase was awesome. Especially when Dibiase and Hart went at it. Crowd was so into it. When Brett faked the knee injury and rolled him up, flying crossbody block over the top rope and especially when Virgil held Brett and Dibiase kneed Virgil. Crowd lost it. For me, One of my favorite parts of a match in WWE history.

I've to strongly disagree with Jake on this one, a lot of matches with Hogan, Warrior, Andre, Big John Studd and some of the other big guys from the golden era put on some really boring matches. We needed a change in the early 90's, guys like Bret, HBK, Waltman, Owen and others gave us something new. Not disrespecting the golden era because Million Dollar Man, Savage, the Dragon and Dynamite Kid opened the door for smaller guys.

Jake is obviously still bitter about what Bret said in his book. Jake allegedly broke his leg and couldn't travel the road while in Stampede. One night, Bret forgot something at his house before going to the other town, and saw Jake through the window walking around no problem cooking a hearty meal for himself. Jake has also been called a liar by countless people in the business -- so his opinion doesn't really hold water.
Case in point -- Bret didn't sell?....He was one of the best at selling an ass kicking!
Jake really needs to stop with his bold-face lies -- it comes across as pathetic.

If you look at the entire WWE roster in late 1992, I don't think there was a better choice than Bret Hart. In mid-1991, Mr. Perfect suffered a serious back injury and was out for a year. In late 1992, Bret headlined his first PPV main event at Survivor Series, and Hennig made his in-ring return in a tag-match in the mid-card. Hennig was plagued by back problems and was out again in early 1994.

With Jake, this is clearly sour grapes. He's still bitter that WWE pushed these smaller guys, who were more athletic than him, and could do way more than him in the ring. I will give it to Jake, that he was a better promo than Bret, but both Bret and Shawn had him beat in pretty much every other area, including selling. The only times Shawn didn't sell is when he had an issue with someone or something, even then, it wasn't every time, as he sold well against Bret, and oversold against Hogan.

Jake was great im the day. I remember his stuff with the Macho Man, The Undertaker and the end of his best stint came v Steve Austin.
However he didn't have great technical skills in the ring & ability like Bret & Shawn. He was good but never great as the other 2. You could see the ability growing from HBK & Hitman from their tag days and they grew as single competitors. Jake could sell and was good at interviews. However he always stayed at 1 level. He never looked after himself well either. How big would Jake Roberts been without his snake? Without that gimmick, prob would have been very average. Whereas the other 2 relied on what they could do in the ring with their abilities. Jake couldn't do half the moves those 2 could do, with all respect. So it come across that he was a bit bitter or jealous cause these 2 were behind him at 1 point as attraction but both ended up eclipsing him and got to be the main attraction & World Champions which he never got. Jake was a good performer but never really raised his level enough

That was already before the Montreal screwjob. Didn't get any better after that.

But, with Bret filling Austin's role. The face turns need to be short. His betrayals should set up the next heel angle of his. He is the Anti-Flair. Like Flair, he has exceptional skills. But, a bit more demure so you cannot tell where or when he does his nefarious acts. His face work is meh. But, it's meant to be. He was champion material. But, he has to be used in a specific way

@EBC-ENTTo be brief Jake Roberts during his WWE run was never positioned as the top babyface nor was he positioned as the top heel who got to work the top babyface. Those were the money positions in WWE. Jake was the guy who the top heel worked with prior to working the top babyface.
Jake was also one of the first wrestlers to leave the good ship WWE for WCW with the expectation of making a windfall only to find out upon arrival that Bill Watts had sliced his pay in half. At the same time, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels start to make inroads into occupying those main event/big money slots in WWE that Jake never had the opportunity to occupy. In short if you ever look at the homes that Hart and HBK live in, they’re millionaires homes. Jake’s isn’t. Thus lies the issue at hand.

To Jake Roberts: Instead of being so bitter about others, think about why they made it and you didn't. There are so many reasons, but I'll tell you the most important ones.
    1) You are a stick man. Instead of drinking and doing coke in the bars every evening after the matches, you could have gone to a gym more often and worked on yourself. That's why, for example, an Ultimate Warrior had an advantage over you and why Vince made him champion and not you.
    2) Wrestling talent and skill: Bret Hart or Shawn Michaels may have been a little shorter than you, but had more talent and skill on their left finger than you had on their entire body. The Hitman is a living legend who has performed gigantic matches in the ring that average followers like you can only dream of. I understand that every wrestler has strengths and weaknesses, but wrestlers like Bret Hitman Hart and HBK (and I don't like Michaels at all) were fantastic athletes in the ring that were very rare.
They took wrestling to a higher level in the 90s and were pioneers compared to the 80s. If you had consumed fewer drugs and alcohol and worked on yourself in a more disciplined manner, you would certainly have been more successful. Many wrestlers from back then like Dibiase, Roberts etc. should stop speaking out of bitterness about our heroes from back then. They just lose the respect and favor of the fans.

Worked the territories, he was actually a good guy. And Vince took him in and he gave him a great gimmick that Ted ran with. But his body wasn't huge and chiseled. He wasn't on a bunch of steroids. Holding onto sour grapes. About the time Jake was phasing out of the business and into the dark depths of his habits was about the time those 2 would have been coming up and moving above him on the card. Likely just resentment he harbored way back then when he was all drugged up and injured seeing these 2 younger guys moving above him on the card because Jake was just unreliable with his issue to be trusted higher on the card. Also dosen't like that Bret didn't have some good opinions of him. Jake has come a long way with his mental health, but he's still a damaged man at the end of the day. And that mentality surfaces at times with the right triggers. These 2 names being some of them.

Bret was a master in-ring storyteller. In my opinion Shawn didn't become that until his 2002-2010 return. My criticisms with Shawn's 1995-1998 run stems from his backstage antics which taints my view of his in-ring work, but I can see where Shawn was a poor seller depending on who he was working with. He sold poorly-to-half-A$$ with certain mid-carders, sold well for his buddies or stars on his level who would legit kick his arse if he pulled that sh*t on them during a match.
As much as I love Jake's work, I often get the feeling that when he says he doesn't regret that he never got a world title run because he didn't need it, his comment towards Bret and Shawn makes me not believe him.

    • @afdcg
      @afdcg 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

He wasn't over as you think. Luger was supposed to be the champion but Bret Hart cried backstage and they did the count out finish to water down the backstage heat between Lex and many wrestlers who wanted a main event push like Ramon, Shawn, Bret and a few.
Again with Diesel was Vince idea and when. It wasn't doing anything well Patterson and Gerald brisco told Vince to go with Shawn.
Shawn and Bret both belonged to the low card division. Only because of Prichard, Brsico and Patterson being a fan of them gave them a run with the belts.
The ppv buys, house shows etc prove how big of flops were Bret and Shawn.
Ted dibiase, cornette and even others hate these outsiders like Hogan, warrior or Goldberg so they keep shitting on them.
Just because they have a high regard for Bret and Shawn doesn't make them successful.

Bret Hart was a long term baby face at that time. Lex was a WCW and had not toured much in WWF territory. Luger schedule in 93 was very less. He hardly did house shows.
Fans probably had seen Bret more than Luger at that point.
You can go back and see the footage and Lex Lugers entire reaction isn't showed in the clip. Then they switch to Bret and show the entire audience reaction. They mostly did that because Bret was planned to win the belt on wrestle mania.

I disagree with Jake on this one. Just because you don't like a wrestler's style doesnt mean he didn't deserve to have the success he had. Bret was very talented in the ring and yes, he didn't draw the kind of money that Hogan did but he was a believable Champion and he could tell stories in the ring.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Here’s mine, Brett was given several runs with several belts. Jake had none. Ted was offered a role of a lifetime and did well with that. When both Ted and Brett’s run came to an end both offered lucrative contracts with WCW during the Monday night wars, Jake wasn’t. Jake was an incredible talent heel or face. Great mic skills too. At the end of the day it’s all a work. It’s about drawing and making money. I think Brett did better on both.
Not to mention on Jakes 2nd run with WWE he was used to help put Steve Austin over or job to him. Austin had a great run with both Brett and Shawn. In all fairness Jake did with Ted. Brett had a phenomenal match with Benoit too.
Shawn and Brett both could have and carry matches with big men very well too.
I’m glad to see Jake doing so well too.

Bret's promos were boring in the exact same way that every baseball or basketball player in every pregame interview is boring... and that's why they worked for me. He made all the rest of that wacky bullshit seem more real, because he talked like every other boring athlete I ever saw. To me, his promos put wrestling over, moreso than himself.
