Have boomslang numbers increased? Predators learn where there is easy prey. What about the boomslang's natural predators? Have their numbers decreased? That's just 3 basic reasons a person can think of. Has the boomslang behavior and hunting methods been studied? Perhaps their preferred prey is declining in the usual places, forcing them to look elsewhere.
We need a PhD student or researcher to answer the questions you ask. We really do not know. Natural snake predators (snake-eagles, secretarybirds) are not a feature of mountain fynbos, so I don't think there are fewer snake predators. Boomslang are bird predators predominantly, so perhaps there has been a decrease in other bird densities. We suspect boomslang are benefiting from warmer temperatures, with negative repercussions on rockjumpers: but there is no baseline information on the snakes and how widespread this issue is beyond Blue Hill. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/ibi.12846
Seems like many snake catchers are releasing these animals back 'into the wild'. I sometimes wonder, if they maybe upsetting the delicate ecological balance in those areas where those rescued snakes have been released.
Bird parents everywhere "you better stop eating our kids or we're going to be really upset!... Ok if you eat our third and final child then we'll... Uh oh, guess it's time to make a new nest in us birds natural habitat, the f***ing ground!"
So over 1000s of years of extremes of warming and cooling the Cape Rockjumpers managed to survive and yet we are to be shamed for manmade warming that is in reality sun made warming. Nice video but the slightly veiled condemnation of humans for global warming is over the top.

Difficult to see what's going on clearly.
There are some insensitive a*sholes in these comments. This was a very terrifying and painful predation upon living breathing creatures. Get help.

鳥も地面に巣をつくるんだね。いつか見つけたいな。❤
Boomslamgs are super venomous right?
Oh yea, they can easily kill adult humans. Probably why you didn’t see the bird fight very long

Haha so very sad but also true.
I only see two, not three. Snake checked for another that's for sure.
So bad but wt to do...
It's unfortunate that our view is obstructed

Well.....at least it's a well fed snake.
True. From the snake's perspective this was a good day.
Ma che orrore
Skip the first 3 min - nothing happens
Numbers are going down because they're stupid enough to nest ON THE GROUND perhaps?

You must be another brain washed and poisoned global worming believer. (Millennial). Wake up from your wild dreams. It's 2019.

WJack97224 I agree, @Jacob Willow has some serious comprehension problems. Pretty sad.

The parent birds did nothing but SIT THERE AND CHIRP AS THE SNAKE AT THEIR BABIES!!!!!
It did what?? It at their babies. Well in their defense it is quite difficult to know what to do when a snake is ating your babies.
Shit... Bad way to go..
