I live up here in Alaska. Fences near freeways put up is actually to protect the moose from charging into the roadways. It cuts down the numbers from vehicles hitting them. Not only does it provide protection for the drivers, but it also protects the moose from getting struck and killed. I have seen a lot of moose coming out of nowhere while driving. I have seen them dead on the side of the road from being hit by a vehicle. I hope this will help more ppl understand why there are fences put up near freeways. We actually need a lot more put up by the freeways.
Yep, it helps both sides. Hopefully soon we will have cars that can predict animals coming on the road and don't need fences anymore:)
I understand completely, but wild animals don't understand human created boundaries that are meant to protect them. What is needed is underground passageways. Possibly not capable there? Much love ove from a much warmer southern state!
Mama protecting her babies.
What choice did it have,it's trapped between the fence & the highway??
It's definitely a tough situation for the moose, being caught between the fence and highway. While there are entry points in the fence that allow moose to pass through, it can still be challenging for them to navigate safely in such a confined space. Wildlife crossings and better habitat management could help in such scenarios. Thanks for raising this important point!
At the wrong place at the wrong time. Glad all is okay. Momma has two babies to look after there…
She was clearly thinking about trampling him to death. The SUV saved him.
If I saw a moose with 2 babies I'd have the sense to not ride past her.
Makes sense 😀
I think by the time he saw moose the die was cast.
A Cow Moose protecting her calves is a VERY dangerous critter.
Absolutely! A cow moose protecting her calves is incredibly protective and can be very dangerous. It's always best to keep a safe distance and respect their space to avoid any potential threats. Thanks for your comment!
She is just protecting her little one. I was jogging a few years back and thank God nothing happened to me.
Great to hear that you are safe, but what would you do if you saw a moose while running?
@@leupinagaspar16 you jogged a couple years ago and nothing happened? You went jogging one time?
She has young ones to protect
I feel badly for the trapped Moose and her calf.....
Calves.
It's ok, everyone is safe at the end
Moose don't have"cubs" they have calves.Grow up, come back, stop being stupid. Please
@@tj-kv6vrStop being so critical. Your comment contributed nothing.
Calf
She is worried too! Them’s her babies!
True
That was a very dangerous situation, thanks to the car driver who acted instead of just watching
Wild mamas can be dangerously protective of their babies when they perceive a threat. Stay away!
My guy saw the moose charging and quickly transitioned into dead animation
Wou, sad story..
Why would that bicycle rider ride up on a mother with not one but two calves. Dude needs a bigger helmet
Maybe he didn't see the calves. Many cyclists are in a "zone" while riding.
The cylist reacted just right, I doubt he realised there would be a moose and two calves there. Moose don't stay in one place all the time.
Dude looked like he fainted
Ikr? I shouldn't laugh, but there was something comical about her ...
He probably did
Looks like he played dead
Rooting for the Moose !
Thank you for your support 🙏
The poor moose is being cut off from her natural habitat by that fence. I'm on the moose's side on this one!
Who said there is sides to this? I don’t think if you asked the cyclist they would say the moose did anything ‘wrong’ if you will. That doesn’t mean you can’t have sympathy for both.
@sallysailor5642 in Alaska, there are openings for the moose to get back in. She just hadn't found the opening yet. Not the bike riders fault.
@@TheMW2informer True, no one wants the cyclist hurt, but Mama is scared for her babies. There should be some openings along this fence because clearly it’s not keeping animals from entering the highway😒😢
You're spot on-it's definitely a tricky situation! The gate could use a bit of an upgrade to keep moose from wandering onto the highway. The moose was just being a super mom, protecting her babies, and the cyclist had no idea they were about to star in a wildlife documentary.
That fence is on JBER a military base. It is going nowhere.
Sad, the moose and babies are on the wrong side if the highway wildlife protection barrier. I wonder how long they will need to travel to get around it or if humans will help out.
There is passage every several hundred yards. She will need to wander along until a funnel presents. There are 40,000 racing minions traveling daily on this stretch.
More than that: COW HAS 2 CALFES!!
Underpasses built for wildlife have seemed to work well.
Haven't seen them while driving that road
@@Alexandrovan There are 1 way gates in that fence, where if the moose walk along it for awhile they come to a gates that allows them to go back through and away from the Richardson Highway. That moose must have come through a road access to get on that side of the fence...
Richardson ? Glen highway
Ah noobie to Alaska stay away from mama and babies moose are actually more dangerous than bears
What an unfortunate location - he had to chug up a small incline instead of down it.
I have never been to Alaska but I know enough about moose to turn and go the other direction if you see one, especially one with a couple of calves. I have watched footage of a moose chasing off a grizzly bear that came too close to her calf.
You are right 👍 Thank you for sharing 🙏
@@Alexandrovan - th-cam.com/video/39-9A2fnQyY/w-d-xo.html
Was it the one where the bear had already killed one of her calves and was now after the second (it's by a body of water).
@@sharibigay4712 - yes!
This kind of thing can happen anywhere where moose are present. We had a moose outside our perimeter fence one afternoon and everyone who was supposed to go off shift had to wait until Security positioned their vehicles between the parking area and the moose. The oncoming shift waited in their cars or on the buses until it was safe. Operations had to wait for the people who were relieving them to get inside and take turnover and the buses had to wait until everyone who was going home on them, could get out there and on board. Crazy situation, but the moose is always in charge.
@@allenra530 Wow, that sounds like quite an encounter! Moose can certainly disrupt our plans when they decide to make an appearance. It’s incredible how everyone had to come together to ensure safety. Thank you for sharing your experience-it's a reminder of how powerful and unpredictable nature can be. Stay safe out there!
I used to live there in the early 2000s…this is pretty common…always be wary any time you are near a cow with calves…obviously, same for bears (sows) with cubs.
Poor mama. Scared.
Where is the video to show us the moose and her babies are safe ?
WTF? You were just looking at it!
@@davehshs651 why do u have to be rude ?????????????
@@erikaabood5433 Sorry. Didn't mean to be rude. Was just expressing shock at a very strange comment. In the video, the moose and her babies ARE safe.
@@davehshs651 they are the wrong side of the fence with the high way I wanted to know if they got back the other side , apology accepted.
@@erikaabood5433 Me too!
Looks like that mother moose & her calves got in a dead-end situation. They obviously couldn't move on through that huge fence, and must have somehow crossed that busy highway to get there. They effectively trapped themselves in. Wonder if anything was done to help them out. The charge at the cyclist was purely natural instinct, so no blame on the moose, of course. Possibly the cyclist didn't look over far enough ahead to see there might be a situation to avoid, and rode into harm's way.
You're right, it's a tough spot for both the moose and the cyclist. Mama moose was just protecting her babies, and the cyclist didn't have much time to react. It’s all part of the wild and unpredictable encounters we get here in Alaska! Sometimes, nature just takes its course.
Sure hope they got them relocated safely.
Yeah, the rescue team helped them
Unpredictable nature of Alaska wildlife? Seems pretty predictable
The wildlife in Alaska can definitely be unpredictable, even if you think you know what to expect! One moment you’re enjoying a peaceful ride, and the next, a protective mama moose decides to charge. Nature always has its surprises! Stay tuned for more of Alaska’s wild moments!
How very frightening and sad for a trapped moose and her baby...hope he's ok..
Yes, everyone is safe, thanks
That frickin' fence.
Yeah, that fence is part of the Air Force base, making things even trickier! It's meant for security but can complicate things for wildlife and humans alike. Stay tuned for more wild encounters and unexpected moments!
@@Sacramento-mv8nr that fence has wildlife gates installed. Momma knows where they are and she enters and exits freely.
…. FOOLISH CYCLIST DID NOT STOP UPON SEEING MOOSE!!
Good lesson for other cyclists, right?
Busy road for Alaska.
Yep, Parks highway
@@AlexandrovanThe Parks highway starts in the valley, that is the Glenn highway.
It’s ok guys I was just playing dead 🤗
Haha
Must be pretty old clip, the military spent some money to provide for exits on that stretch many years ago, one of those one way gates. That was 20 years ago.
Yes, exits are there, but not everywhere and moose do not always use them
What happens if the moose doesn't have a ID card?
@@PappyNet01 Great question! If only moose could carry ID cards, right? 😄 The entry gates are designed with special doors that allow moose to enter but not exit, creating a safer environment for both the animals and people. It’s a unique way to manage the wildlife around busy areas. Thanks for your fun comment!
Where is she supposed to go? across that busy highway? She would go into the wood s but the fence is preventing that.
Yes, that gate on the right is part of the Air Force base. These gates have entry doors that allow moose to get in but not out, which can create a challenging situation for them. The idea is to prevent wildlife from getting onto the highway, but it also limits their ability to navigate freely. This close call really highlights the need for better solutions to keep both animals and people safe. Thanks for your concern and for watching!
It has been my experience, living in an area where moose live, that the moose will go where it wants to go and people either get out of the way or become road kill. My aunt and uncle lived in Anchorage for over 40 years and the crabapple tree that they had in the front yard stayed about 5 feet tall for 35 years. A moose came every year and ate all of the new growth.
can't blame a mama for protecting her babies
True
Had to lay 'er down. 😮
Right? Sometimes you just have to lay 'er down and hope for the best! Glad it worked out okay. Stay tuned for more close calls and adventures!
Notice all the cars stopping on the side of the road. Probably not going to help the situation.
I guess they were calling 911 and recording the scene..
Moose worried about her rap sheet, sees her probation officer rock up and tries to become small…cyclist? What cyclist?
Interesting
common sense.....see any animal with kids?....stop n go back
true..likely bicyclist is safe
Well, that long fence sure does not help the Moose.
It's kinda saving them from being hit
Elmendorf AFB is on the other side of that fence.
I jumped a moose hunting in Maine!
It roard at me i never saw it had 50 feet of view.
Scared out of me
Wow, that sounds like a heart-pounding encounter! Moose sure know how to give you a surprise you won't forget. Bet you set a new personal record for high jumping! Glad you're okay and thanks for sharing your wild story! 🦌😅
Human hunting only cause ecological destruction.
@@monicasong427Not subsistence hunting. Ever hear of culling the herd? And by the way, I'm not a hunter.
What the hells the goofball on the bike doing?
It definitely looks like an intense situation! The cyclist was probably just caught off guard by the sudden appearance of the moose and its calves. Wildlife encounters can be unpredictable! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@Alexandrovan not really
@@Alexandrovan - I don't know how one could miss a big moose up ahead on the bike path. Its not a cottontail that suddenly jumped across the bike path out of the weeds:))
She should have throw his bike over the fence. 😅
That's an interesting idea! In the heat of the moment, it's hard to know the best course of action, but staying calm and trying to create distance is always important. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
There just happened to be someone or dare I say a cameraman on the spot to film the incident!
This moose was attacking other people before this incident, therefore it was a good reason to stop and record it
@@Alexandrovan thanks, I was curious!
@@Alexandrovan. Shouldn’t the cyclist have stopped far back when he/she saw a moose with two calves? I would expect anyone cycling in Alaska to know that you don’t approach a moose, much less a moose with two calves. It is like the tourists who approach bison in Yellowstone and end up in a tree!
Just “ happened “? EVERYONE has a 12 mp camera on their person nowadays.

How'd they get on the wrong side of the fence? -- if there were gates one could be opened to allow them to go back into the forest -- the cyclist probably made the right decision to hit the ground and not move as a sign that he was no threat
They went around
She was not supposed to be on that side of the fence. It’s built specifically to keep them on the forest side, with periodic underpasses to the other side of the highway. This is on a military base.
Huh??
That fence was built BECAUSE it’s a military compound.
The fence was not “ specifically “ built because of moose.
There are moose EVERYWHERE in Alaska… both sides of every fence in Alaska there is moose…
These moose just happened to cross the road from the south… and there happened to be a military fort there with a security fence.
Smh
Stupid fences and walls.
I get it! Those fences are part of the Air Force base, but they sure make for some wild encounters. Guess the moose missed the memo on respecting boundaries! Welcome to the unpredictable world of Alaskan wildlife-where even fences can't keep the excitement out!
Worst thing to do is fall down and let the moose trample you. Dont know how to speed up and get away?
