Add light beach type sand into the mix it will break down the plaster so it does not get as hard. Makes it more pliable.

I got a ready mixed plaster of paris. I feel like it made it even easier to create the blocks

Salaamz, we did this last year too 😁 I actually cut the plaster of Paris with soil to make it more "real" and to cut down on plaster dust when excavating. I like the mini size. Brilliant! I made mine too big so that my son got tired after finding the first few things.

What a great idea to add soil. I was thinking about doing that the next time around and I'm happy to hear it works out. Even the small soap size was too much for my 6-year-old and she ended up stopping midway. This project is definitely for some and not so much for others. What did you put in yours? And about how much soil to plaster?

These look like so much fun! I will have to find a way to incorporate these into one of our units. Oh and my landlord will thank you for telling us to rinse it outside...you know I would have gone right to the sink!

Oh yeah, your landlord will certainly be happy you're not clogging the drains! It's so tempting to just wash it, but I'm trying to be mindful of the consequences. This was such a fun project, I hope you try it.

You'll be happy with this one and your kiddos will love it. But maybe wait just a bit as they may get frustrated if they are too young. Or keep the material soft for it's easy for them by excavating it just an hour after it's done.

You want to make sure no little ones dip their fingers in the wet plaster of paris - it gets HOT when it drys. This is such a good idea, those kits are so much fun but they can get expensive if you need to buy a lot of them.

You know, only one project ended up getting hot while it set, the rest were cool. Weird, right? Maybe in the trays, we didn't feel the heat and once the processing was done, it cooled down. Maybe it's only hot when it's wet and once it sets it cools.Time for a little science project. Getting out the thermometer to test how hot it gets :) Anyway, you're right, the kits get expensive, and this is a good alternative.

Spray alcohol on the air bubbles they disappear and the alcohol evaporates
