The Horrifying Legend of Mel's Hole | Real or Hoax?

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 29 มิ.ย. 2024
- In 1997, radio presenter Art Bell had a phone conversation with a man named Mel. He had discovered something strange on his land, a seemingly bottomless hole. Over the course of 5 years, Mel and Art would have a number of conversations live on Coast to Coast AM, discussing the increasingly strange experiences Mel had with the hole.
Join me as we delve into all of those conversations and try to get to the bottom of Mel's Hole. Government cover up? Hoax? Or a mixture of the two. Let's find out on this entry into The Tape Library.

I am not educated enough to comment on endless holes in the earth, however this is a super interesting story! Great job on the research. I loved the Coast to Coast show.
I think it's complete bullshite
Would definitely recommend, night drive. Iove the ones where there is a wee back story addressing you, like the women in the back of the car with you , and being kidnapped by the story teller.....proper creepy
As a woman called Mel I can’t tell you how hard my double take was when I read the title of this video

Oh my 😅🤣
Well is it real or not lady?! 😂
Ah yes, and how is thee old hole these days?
😂😂😂 must be a very big hole Mel.....!!!
Humans throwing garbage down a seemingly bottomless hole is one of the most human things I have ever heard.
Look at the modern dating scene... 🤣
Happened all the damn time in my hometown. We had many sinkholes lol
People can be gross & damaging!
No one can find the hole apart from all the locals who throw old sofas down there.

As someone who's accidentally caught a couple of sharks, I'd think those who seek them out must be an interesting folk. Most of the time, the fish you catch can't kill you, lol

Don't judge me
But the question remains, is Mel's hole real or a hoax?
Actually one of my favorites it hasn't been covered well in a while. Thanks my dude
Highly subjective. Mel could be a certified GOAT and take you to another world with his hole.
@@TheTapeLibraryno judgement on your interest in holes ....ok, I'll stop now. Genuinely enjoyed this. Get weirder and weirder
All of the other people who knew about this - the neighbors, the Natives, the Basque- no e of them ever came forward to validate his story? Even anonymously? 1 person called in in the beginning and said they'd heard about the first hole, but that's it. If the government silenced him, why didn't they silence Mel? Way too many holes. Still, a fascinating retelling
And in the end 100% of the evidence is "trust me bro".
Mr Ballen style
That's why he had to stop calling. Art was pushing too much for evidence.

Art really wanted a picture of Mel's hole
Mel's hole is a most unfortunate name for a bottomless paranormal pit.
My dad had a late night commute listening to Art Bell and would regale us with the epic of Mel's Hole. It was good times.
Man this was peak childhood, we'd listen to art bell on those late night drives going home from visiting family or camping listening to these crazy stories until falling asleep in the back of the car.
Same, but it was my Mom.
In 2002, a group of thirty people led by Gerald Osborne undertook an expedition to find the hole, but were unable to locate it.[3] Local news reporters who investigated the claims found no public records of anyone named Mel Waters ever residing in, or owning property in, Kittitas County.[2]
According to State Department of Natural Resources geologist Jack Powell, the hole does not exist and is geologically impossible. A hole of the depth claimed "would collapse into itself under the tremendous pressure and heat from the surrounding strata," said Powell. Powell said an ordinary old mine shaft on private property was probably the inspiration for the stories, and commented that Mel's Hole had established itself as a legend "based on no evidence at all."[2] Geologist Pat Pringle doubted Waters story about having lowered 80,000 feet of fishing line into a hole, saying that the heat of the Earth would have snapped it before it could reach such a depth.
Honestly the part that struck me the most unbelievable was the bit where Mel paid his ex-wife $25,000 a MONTH to lease land he did not live on. Where did he get that money and why was that land worth so much to him? Then the government pays him exactly 10x that much ($3 million per year) without ever checking to see that he has the deed? That seems TOO ODD.
Sorry, maybe I was a bit unclear about that part. I believe he started paying her the $25000 as a kind of gesture of good will when the government started paying him, this wasn't an arrangement they had before that.
@@TheTapeLibrary oh that makes a lot more sense. Thank you!
@@Durpydurp4488 No worries!
Mel went too far with it when he claimed he found the second hole and all kinds of wacky creatures and stuff were in it. Total BS.
That's the problem with elaboration sometimes. It's like Jenga where eventually the structure collapses in on itself.
Pretty much like everything else ever on Art Bell's show.
And they can't send a simple camera down it
@@BradPrichardSo you didn't like Art Bell simply because you don't believe in his topics of conversation. Ok.
@@zoeyrochellezhombie829 Yeah, pretty sure he didn't either.
When you start your first shift as bottomless-hole inspector and they tell you to start filling it
Sounds a bit like every job I've ever had.
"We can't afford to send in a video camera, but we can totally sacrifice a sheep worth hundreds of dollars in meat and wool plus all its feed, a steel cable and crane (how else could they lower it without it falling?) and a secure crate to put it in to explore this possible nuclear zone." Right. 🤨
I get that a camcorder in the late 90s was around 2000$ in today money, but still...come on. Lowering a camera would be my first idea. He could afford thousands of feet of some special fishing line and other equipment.
@@cdev2117 Or at least a microphone so we could listen for water or seismic activity. There's really no excuse to not have audio recordings of this thing.
People can drive a truck up to Mel's hole and dump garbage but nobody knows where Mel's Hole is located? .....How phuckin stupid are people?
Eh, a sheep was probably under $100 in the 90s, a camcorder was expensive. Also it is made up so the sheep makes a better story.
A picture , a sketch , a independent 3rd party witness , a object from the hole ( or near it) , a location , and any flipping thing ! Lol
The part that killed the suspension of disbelief for me was when they talked about bypassing quarantine in Australia. Australia is very serious about biosecurity, and it's due to this that we are free from many diseases and pests that are present elsewhere in the world.
The idea of a bottomless hole creating zombie dogs was okay, but the idea of two governments coming to a special arrangement for someone to bypass quarantine laws was too much?
@TheTapeLibrary I'll concede in context it sounds insane 😂 but apparently yeah that was the part that took me out of it a bit.
I did enjoy the video though, just to clarify. 🙂
except maybe 8 of the most venomous snakes in the world

Yes, recall Orson Wells' "War of the worlds"
You have to remember this was at the height of the X-Files popularity... I bet Mel watched every episode of that show. This story would have made a pretty good episode itself.
18:20 "the government taking an interest... in Mel's hole" I genuinely laughed 😅 interesting story
That hole is a canyon by now
You would be surprised!!!!! The government has done this many many times before!!!! For many different reasons!
Story was totally made up lol by Mel
Art Bell was a true legend.
Definitely. 👍
Absolutely.
Ditto
That he was! 👍🏼
Legend amongst Legends
Apparently Art Bell would've turned 79 just yesterday (June 17). Well happy belated b-day pal and RIP.
How could he know that the 80,000 feet of line he put down the hole didn't hit the bottom? A bunch of slack line isn't like a solid stick that would suddenly stop, or feel like it no longer had weight pulling it downward, because it hit the bottom. It would just start pooling up on the surface of the bottom as he kept letting more line down. Even if the hole was only 1,000 ft deep he could've lowered far more than 80,000 ft of line into it and still thought he wasn't at the bottom, yet.
It's just such an obviously flawed thing to do that it makes me question the whole story.
He also said that he wanted to be dropped into the hole after he died just because he wanted to see what happened... I don't think I should even need to explain why that makes no sense.
Then you have the fact that he never provided a single piece of evidence. No pictures, no video, no audio - nothing. His first excuse being that he couldn't afford a camera and his second excuse being that whenever he tried to take picures they wouldn't turn out. And if so many people were going to the hole to dump trash into it, for many decades, there would've definitely been evidence of it.
It is a really entertaining story, and I really would like it to be true but I honestly don't believe it.
Not to mention that it'd be easy to simply lower a camera down and then pull it back up.
Imagine finding an opening to another world..and using it as a dumpster 🙄 🤦🏻♀️
No wonder they want to invade. Think of all the garbage we threw at them.
The innate human desire to toss things in holes just to see what happens cannot be overcome...
Calm down Shawna
This is 100% what I'd expect humans to do

I try to keep an open mind when it comes to stories like this but, while I believe there is some sort of hole, I don't buy Mel's claims concerning all the events surrounding it. He offers no evidence and, when asked for some, ie. photographs, he gives excuses as to why he can't do so and no one has come forward to cooperate his claims. We're just expected to take Mel's word for it. I think Mel sent the story in, thinking it would just be read on air, but when Art Bell invited him to be on the show, he enjoyed the attention and started making up stories he thought would keep Bell's, and the audience's, attention. The problem is the stories became so outlandish, without anything to back them up, it makes the whole thing unbelievable.
Yeah, the dog and cows being dumped into the hole seems far-fetched, as does the 80,000 depth claim.
Meh, everyone thinks their hole is special...
@@jillianlambert3596🤣😂 literally ended up snorting my drink instead of sipping it when I read your comment lmao. Thank you for the laugh 🤣

One tactic of misinformation is to make things so outlandish and so outstanding that it plants seeds of doubt in everyone, "It sounds crazy? lets make it even crazier"
I have lived in Ellensburg since 2003. Didn't hear about Mel's hole until maybe last summer. Someone was posting an article on our county community page if I remember correctly. I do know the area it is said to be at. It is near a military base, that is true. I don't believe a word of it, but I did enjoy the weird story and the video.
Yeah if there was such a hole it would be all over the news there for decades.
Guy made up a story, then was shocked Art Bell would take him on air and kept up the story over the years
Snow globe mentality.
"Nothing outside my little world exists".
I went to Central Washington. After spring finals my friends and I used to drive out and get wasted and throw the empty bottles down the hole until the black helicopters chased us off. I miss Ellensburg.
My theory is that this entire story is completely and shamelessly fabricated. It's too silly even to make for a good short story. All the same, you can never have too much Art Bell, so I'm still glad it exists.
Agreed. There's totally a Netflix show around this same topic.
Really lost me at the gun
You know what, same. I had a real issue with the gun. But I'm not sure why as it's not that wildly out there compared to many other aspects of the story.
What made Art Bell great was that he would go along with people's wild stories and conjecture while being clearly skeptical and asking questions for the audience.
I believe it's possible. Big sinkholes are a real happening these days. Imagine the people in hell's shock, when cars, old sofas, etc. come hurtling down on them! 🕳️🔥👿

The video was brilliant. Thank you, should do more stories on coast to coast. Was very respectful
The easiest way to identify a bullshit story is whether or not it has an ending. This just drags on and becomes more and more nonsensical.
A story about a hole that goes on for eternity can never end.
Are you saying that for a story to be true it needs a conclusive ending? That feels like the opposite of what I'd expect? Not saying Mels story is true at all, but real life often doesn't get wrapped up in a neat bow (unless I've misunderstood you).
Not at all. Mel's story never held up for me because it starts with one supernatural element and expands into unrelated ones which seem to exist just to prolong the story. It started with a hole with uncanny properties and continued through curing health conditions and having his back teeth stolen and even finding another hole.
This is no criticism of your retelling, of course. I'm a big fan of your channel, but the story never held much water for me beyond a certain point. A mysterious event needn't have a resolution, but there are limits.
@@AndyTremble Ah gotcha, sorry misunderstood what you meant.

I have to go with the "2 Mels' theory".This starts out so strange, yet plausible, and with that chilly 'oooh' mystery to it,but the 2nd Mel hole, the creature in the sheep body, etc.just gets too unbelievable.
Gotta say though..your voice, delivery and cogent story telling skills had me listening spellbound!
Had fallen asleep to something entirely unrelated and woke up to this story. Had to go back to the beginning and listen to it all. You did an exceptional job telling this story in a way that I maintained interest. Suspension of disbelief even moderately active through the seal creature! Loved it. Not sure what exactly the animal cruelty part was, but I have to say a huge thank you for the warning about that. That would have really ruined it for me, and affected me long after. @@TommyBaysMusic Shark fishing line would still collapse under its own weight at the lengths he's speaking of.
Heh, yeah. It's always the little details that let you know when something's total bs.
Er, not that Mel's hole needed help being proven a fake. But still.
This is a simple physics problem. There's no fishing line on earth that could support its own weight at that length.

C2C has gone to s**t in the last 10ish years. The only good host now is George Knapp, especially now that Ian Punnett has died. I barely listen now. Art Bell was a classic whether it was C2C, Dark Matter or Midnight in the Desert. He is much missed and I still listen to all of Art Bell's old shows.
Can't say I've listened to it beyond random old Art Bell episodes, it's not really as well known on this side of the Atlantic

C2C hasn't been worthwhile since Art Bell, which is exactly when I stopped listening. Replacing him with George Snorey killed the show. It went from being about spooky aliens and government coverups and interdimensional whatever's to God, angels, and prayer.
Ian Punndit died?! WTF? I didn't know that. 😲
This is one to listen to several times. There's a few discrepancies I his stories like he seems to modify his story to fit new developments. He said he purchased the land 40 years ago yet later it belongs to his ex, whom he doesn't mention previously. It's just a detail I know
I think (in the first call at least) they were still a couple, so kind of don't think it's weird he would refer to it as his land if they were together when he purchased it.
But just to clarify, the previous owner had purchased it 40 years prior, Mel and his wife had only had it for a few years at that point
Just watching the development of this story it becomes clear that making this up is part of a fantastic imagination and doesn't take anything away from the deep wonder that such a tale inspires. It becomes irrelevant whether the hole really exists....
Brilliantly told, what a great narrator you are. Love your channel, from NZ

So I had a friend who lived near "Mel's hole" I had never heard the story and this was in the mid 2000's. He told me all about it. Then he said he and his friends went off to find said hole with a group of high school boys(my friend was in 4th grade at the time). They found a well that hit a dry aquifer. It was deep but not endless. People dumped all sorts a trash down it. The EPA showed up and got quite mad people had been dumping stuff down there and set about cleaning it. They sealed up the well, and the property was seazed for back taxes owed. Mel moved to Australia, after saying the government "bought" the hole. But he was a known drug abuser, and had no credit in the community any more. And thats when my friend moved out to the east coast, with his mom who was in grad school, while he attended community college.
This sounds a little more plausible
But many people believe that a talking snake told a woman to eat fruit from a tree. 🙄

As someone who has listened to all the radio interviews multiple times before, thank you for making a video which actually tells the entire story. So many people have made videos which entirely gloss over Australia, the second hole, and Mel's various travels. If this is a hoax, the person who made up the narrative is quite a writer. This story has everything.
Such an interesting story... your channel is one of the best for intriguing mysteries! I would love for this story to be true but the most probable explanation is always the simplest. A deep hole could have existed that "seemed" bottomless and it was being used as a dumpster...but then it caved in. Mel (probably an alias) wanted to keep the story going even though the mystery was solved.
Thanks for the kind words!
Loved this one. Sounds like the inspiration for Amazon Prime Outer Range tv series.
Sure does
Came to say this, too!
Yes!!
Is it wrong of me to immediately assume the story is less credible when it's disclosed the guy works in "alternative medicine"? I know stereotyping is bad but there really is a certain type of person always involved in these unproven supernatural claims lmao.
Alternative medicine seems hokey until modern medicine can’t or won’t help you.
@@silver474 that's fair and I have a doctor friend who had to go to another country for traditional medicine, but when most people say "alternative medicine" especially in the USA it's usually a grift like crystal healing or some nonsense they try to sell you
Means pot.
You know what shows me that the history is fake? The legal aspect. In international law there is something called rogatory letters, which is a way to serve lawsuits to people in foreign countries. Mels wife wouldnt have to wait for him to come back to the US to serve him papers related to the property. And having an incoming of 25 thousand dollars a month she would have hired a lawyer good enough to know that.
She supposed worked at the University (Central Washington is in the area). If she was real she would know who to ask to get one of these sent to him
I think the implication is that someone did not like that Mel came back to America. I don't think it was a legal issue of not being able to serve him papers, more a punishment for returning (if you believe any of this at all of course).
The twist where the moisture absorbing ice seems to be the mechanism for creating another Hole is SUCH a satisfying story beat. I cant bring myself to care that it's a "hoax" when it's such good fiction. it really is
Fantastic story, a bit far out near the end but enjoyable to hear. I didn't realize this was an hour long.
Just a bit? Haha. Thanks for watching!
I see you have completed the episode's script without going insane, anyway I'm really excited to watch this epidoes tomorrow (its pretty late here, so can't watch it tonight).
Mel finds a hole..
The Government: 🫳🕳
That was a great and well-researched documentary, my compliments! I also learnt a lot of interesting new details.
But it's really hard to decide whether the story is true or not, we all know it literally only from hearsay.
I actually remember listening to that episode as a 16-year-old teenager I absolutely loved art bell That was a great show.
I'm here! Friday, 12:02 a.m. Perfect!
Great video, would love more that cover Art Bell tales re-examined all these years later
Any suggestions?
I absolutely LOVE Art Bell and his contributions to the genre. That said, there are many beloved stories that were created on his show, for his show. The theatre of Art Bell is a subject that seemingly no one wants to touch. I’ll be damned if I ever give up listening, Art’s shows truly are comfort food. RIP Art Bell.
I heard at least two of the original calls on the air as I was an avid 3rd shift listener at the time. Great memories and a Hell of a story.
Well retold, thanks
Totally phoney of course, there's no History Channel series on it!
The Curse of Mel's Hole!
skin walker ranch
Mel's Ancient Apocahole
Interesting subject. I remember listening to Art Bell a lot as a kid. I'm pretty sure this story, while interesting is fake. A lot of Mel's stories are increasingly bizarre and nonsensical which leads me to question his mental health.
Coast to coast is awesome! My dad listened to it when I was a kid. That's how i got into it. Great video with good detail.
The name of this one made me chuckle 🤭 I just couldn’t help it
You are not alone 😂
Is it real and is it horrifying? 😂
