How is the sleep going?
I have decided that I will be buying a full set from you all. I have the extra cash next month and so I feel its time. I have spent about 4 months looking for good handcrafted shikibuton and kakebuton and this certainly seems to be the best I can find. I could get a factory mill foam one for considerably less from a major chain but it seems like reviews have all said that they are significantly inferior to a handcrafted one. I love that you have so many videos about your futons and care about the way they are treated after they have been shipped. You're a business and need to make money but you don't sacrifice the quality to ensure rapid recurring sales. You reply quickly to people who message, and I have yet to find a single bad review (and I have watched several unboxing and update videos). In all, Great job! I will certainly be getting a full set from you and can not wait to start using it!

I have had my futon for 4 days now and it is really amazing. My sleep has improved and I love how much space is in my room now that I don't have a bedframe in the middle of it. My only complanate is I wish the covers came in different colours than white as my cats also love my new bed.
If your covers are made of natural fibers, you could easily dye them to the color you want
I believe I ended up getting my futon around October 2022, thought I’d update on here how I’ve liked it! It’s really nice, well made ! I got the double size and it’s perfect cause I like to stretch, it’s a bit heavier than you would think but that only means it’s more padded! Definitely suggest anyone who gets one they have a place to put it outside and beat it some, when I’m doing a clean I’ll put it outside for a little while! It’s a great option if you have limited space. For me that was the case and also I have a bad shoulder- but sleeping on the floor tbh hasn’t made it worse or better. Im also using my futon on another very nicely padded rug on top of a carpet- and find that the firmness /softness works perfectly( I prefer a firmer bed but this is very comfortable) anyway just thought I’d update since reading other comments was what made me go with this company! I really like this futon, so thanks again!!! ❤

Hello! I was wondering if the care is the same for kakebuton. Is the kakebuton machine washable, or do you only wash the cover?

I recovered a futon some time ago and its a bit dirty. Before taking it to the tecycling point I'd like to know what possibilities there are. Its so beautiful , even its cover....
Not really having see your futon and knowing its construction (is it one of ours?), and not knowing how dirty it is, this is a difficult question. Normally we say do not wash your futon at all, but keep it covered and wash the cover. However, if the case is between washing it or throwing it out, then we recommend following these steps on our website's blog: Urine.FutonBedsFromJapan.com. These instructions are for cleaning your futon if an animal or baby has urinated on it, so they are fairly extreme steps. If your futon is not too dirty, we would first suggest spot washing it with a wet cloth and then hanging it until it is completely dry through-and-through (very important!). One final note, if your futon is a thick, western made one, do not bother washing it as it will not survive the process and it is too thick to dry properly. The instructions we provide are only for a Japanese made futon.
Should you take your cover and sheets off the futon when hanging in the sun?
This is a good time to wash your cover and sheets. That said, you don't have to take the cover/sheets off every time you hang your futon out.
@@Futonbedsfromjapan1 Is removing the cover much better for eliminating moisture/bacteria from the futon, or is it a small difference? My wooden balcony rail itself can accumulate dirt so if there's little difference, I'd rather keep the cover on when hanging.
@@thelol77 You can keep the cover on if needed. However, when you're washing your cover is also a good time to hang your shikibuton, but if your balcony is not clean leaving your cover on is okay.
Would you recommend using a tatami mat underneath your futons? Also, can you do futon covers in different colors or do you only sell them in white? I'm interested in a futon and your videos have been very helpful. Thank you.

That is a great question, Katelynn. We too have a very heavy rainy season and have snowy climates in some places here in Japan further up north. When the weather (or other conditions) won't allow you to hang your shikibuton outside, then please hang it in the sunniest area in your place. The important thing here is to make sure you get it up off the floor so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture. Also, in colder climates where heaters/furnaces are often running a lot this tends to dry the air out quite a lot which is good for a futon.

Hi guys, just received my shikibuton today. I ordered the new dragon sakura fabric and it's beautiful. Regarding hanging, I do not have a balcony, pole or any such place to hang my futon outside. Are there any other ways to do this? I really want to put it outside when I need to. Thank you in advance.

Very sorry for the slow reply. We somehow missed your message. If you don't have any means to hang your shikibuton outside -- which happens here in Japan as well during rainy seasons -- then the important thing is to regularly get your shiki up off the floor and perhaps drape it over some chairs in the sunniest area in your place so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture.

I’m not sure if you guys will respond or it is too late. I just had a question if anyone is willing to answer. When it comes to taking out the futon outside, do I have to take out the cover first or can I leave it with the futon cover and leave it outside? Just because I don’t want it to get dirty or dusty if I were to remove the futon cover.

That is a great question Nivek. Here in Japan we actually do both. Typically we hang in the in morning sun for a an hour or two and if our cover needs washing we may take it off then, or alternatively we will hang it with the cover still on. It is important to at least sometimes hang it out without the cover, but you don't always have to remove it. Regarding being dirty or dusty, after hanging out, you may wish to lightly tap it with a badminton racket or similar -- no need to pound on it hard -- or even your hand to remove dust and also dried skin. You can also use a vacuum cleaner, but use a nozzle with no spinning "beater bar", but is suction only. I hope this is helpful.
Got it, so is it okay to take out the futon (without the cover) by itself at least once a month? Because I do take out the futon outside(with cover on) at the end of each week. Since I live in California the weather isn’t too bad. What’s highly recommended?
Would also a tatami may be convenient as well? Since the floor is hardwood it does get dirty pretty quick I clean and sweep daily. Sorry for asking so many questions I just want my futon to last for a long time.

Hi! I just recently bought a queen size futon and LOVE IT !!!
However, I was curious. My old queen size comforter seems waaay too big. would an American full size fit the futon better? Right now I'm using a duvet cover with my old fitted sheets over it and they're very baggy.
Also about the outdoor airing. I live in florida which is basically a swamp and I feel like airing it outside would introduce more moisture than inside. would it be fine if i hang it over some chairs in an open space?

Hello Vesono, Thank you once again for your purchase. Kochi Japan -- like much of Japan's coastal areas -- is a very humid region. We typically hang our futon in the morning sun for 1-2 hours. If you feel that it is too moist outside, then it is okay to hang it inside in the sunniest area in your place. The key point is to get it up off the floor so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture. Sunlight (UV) also helps to kill microorganisms/bed bugs as well.

Sorry for the slooow reply. I'm only seeing your comment now for some reason. If you live in an area which often has bad weather then, though you can't hang your futon outside, you simply need to make sure that you get it up off the floor to shed moisture. Just drape it over some chairs in the sunniest area in your place while you're at work. Also, if you live where it isn't humid than this is much less of an issue. If you live in a cold area and the furnace is running all winter, the air is typically very dry.

I live in Portland Oregon.where it will rain for months on end with no sun. Meaning there is no sunny place in my apartment. Will hanging it up by a heater work?
Hello Emily, Thanks for your excellent question. The key thing is to get your futon up off the floor so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture. It is okay to put it by a heater -- but not too close! Hanging it in the morning sun is the best because UV kills microorganisms and even bed-bugs, etc.. However, when sun is not available, then hanging it inside is the next best option. Leaving a shikibuton on the floor without hanging it traps in moisture which is a problem. But if you hang it up regularly inside this is a good solution. But best solution is hanging in the morning sun when you can.
Tough to hang in the sun when you live in an apartment w no balcony
Hello Norakat, Very good point. Of course people who live in high-rise apartments in Tokyo also have this issue. If you cannot hang your shikibuton outside, then the next best thing is to hang it inside over a folding laundry rack or even some chairs in the sunniest area in your place. The key thing here is to get your shikibuton up off the floor so that air can flow around it so that it can shed moisture. You can also find futon dryers on Amazon as well. However, it is important to make sure they will work with the electrical system of your country.
How long do they last? How do you keep them from "denting"? thanks
With proper care you can expect your futon to last 5-7 years. That said, we have had customers that prefer a more firm bed use them for much longer. All futon compress over time. The best way to prevent this is to hang them regularly in the sun. In addition, if you want a softer feel, then place additional cushioning such as a trifold pad underneath your futon. The surface under your shikibuton will have a large impact on the feel of it. We would never recommend placing your futon on a hardwood floor, for example.
how do you do maintenance for the kakebuton? do you need to sun this as well?
Hello Hayes, Yes, you would care for the kakebuton the same way as you would care for the shikibuton. Hang it out in the sun regularly. That said, as they are much thinner they tend to shed moisture more quickly.

Hello! Very sorry to reply so slowly, I somehow managed to miss your message. It would probably be okay to steam clean it, however, it is extremely important that you hang it until it is completely dry through to the center. If it is very wet this may take a week or more. (So avoid saturating the cotton if you can.)

Hello Jenny-Magdalena Hordan, If you are experiencing mold it is not being dried often enough. It need to be hung out in the sun so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture. Also, we do not recommend rolling your shikibuton. It should be folded into thirds in a "Z" shape as rolling it simply compresses the cotton prematurely and likely holds in the moisture. Hello is if I get a tatami mat with the futon. Do I have to put the futon out in the sun every week? I live in Canada & winters are harsh with snow. Can I have spurts of like 4+ months without leaving it out?

In those cases the next best thing is to get it up off the floor (or surface it is on) and hang it in the sunniest area in your place. They key thing here is to get it up so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture. Even with a tatami mat it is important to hang your futon. Here in Japan, though most futon are placed on tatami, we still hang our futon regularly.
Regarding tatami. If you're looking for true Japanese made tatami you can find them here: tatami.us, otherwise you can typically find cheaper, knock-offs on Amazon, etc.. (btw, we have no connection to the website we recommended and do not get paid to recommend them.)

In winter often heaters/furnaces are running a lot which makes the air more dry and reduces moisture so your futon won't not need to be hung as much. (Unless you're sweating a lot at night.) If you don't have access to hanging your futon out in the sun on a balcony as is the case in some high-rise apartments or if it is winter/rainy, etc. then hang your futon or drape it over some chairs in the sunniest area in your place while you're away at work. It is important to get it up off of the floor so that air can flow around it so that it can breathe and shed moisture.

Over time the cotton tends to compress, especially when it is moist. By hanging it regularly this helps to keep the cotton fluffy and soft. Also, moist cotton can become unhealthy and grow organisms and mold. It is important to keep your futon healthy and it will be more comfortable to if you hang it regularly.
I take mine to the laundromat that has "giant dryers" and put it in there for 20 minutes
@@Futonbedsfromjapan1 It did not cause any tearing of the quilting stitch but it did not work as well as I'd have liked. It would fluff back up for about one night and that was it. I figure next year I'll have to be dilligent in putting it in front of the patio door in winter time. The issue with that is I sleep during the day due to work.

That said, it is still important to regularly hang your futon to remove moisture and help it re-fluff.
Does the shikibuton cover the entire futon top/underneath or is it just the top part ex like a regular fitted sheet on standard mattress also, I live in a humid area where it’s humid outside would it be bad to air it out outside when it’s humid?
The cover complete encases the shikibuton like a pillow case covers a pillow. There is a zipper down the side. Most places in Japan are quite humid -- and Kochi where we live is extremely humid. The best time to hang your futon out is in the morning sun, and you only need to do it for an hour or two. If it is rainy or too cold don't hang it outside. If the weather doesn't permit, then simply hang your shikibuton up inside in the sunniest area in your place. The key thing is to make sure you get it up off the floor so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture.
Ok, I would love to get one, but I live in the far north where it is below freezing from oct to may, so I can't exactly hang my futon in the sun once a month. Is a futon unsuitable in my climate?

All futon do compress over time. That said, when you buy quality futon with high quality cotton as ours are, you can hang your futon out regularly and re-fluff them. It is poor quality futon will low-grade cotton that are a problem.
I read not to beat your futon. Which is it? Also, what do I do if the humidity outside is worse than inside? Do I air it out inside?
You are correct as there is no need to pound very hard on your futon. In the video you can see that only a gentle tapping is used. Alternatively, you can also vacuum your shikibuton, but we would recommend not using anything with a "beater-bar" but only use suction as this might grab ahold of the quilting stitches and pull them out.
If you feel the weather outside is not good for hanging as it is too humid or raining, etc., then simply hang it inside in the sunniest area in your place. The key thing here is to make sure you're getting your futon up off the floor so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture. Not only does sunlight help dry the futon, but UV rays kill microorganisms.

Yes, if you can't hang it outside for some reason, you can hang it inside in the sunniest area in your place. The important thing is to make sure air can flow around it. That said, the absolute optimum situation is to hang outside. (Squirrels not withstanding.)

Hello Tiffany. Thank you for your interest and your great question. For best results hanging your futon outside is the best way to help it shed moisture re-fluff it. Sunlight also works well to kill microorganisms, bedbugs, etc. too. However, if you cannot hang it outside of your place due to apartment regulations, etc. then it is important to simply regularly up off the floor so air can flow around it and it can shed moisture. Hang it, or drape it over some chairs in the sunniest area of your place while you away or at work.
Stick it out on a chair outside they can’t complain since your technically not hangi anything out if it’s in your chair
I have a futon for like 2-3 years and unfortunately I didn’t know the care of it. Now the sides and the middle of the futon is fluffy but the area we sleep on is compressed. And I got pain after sleeping over 6-7 hours. Is there any remedy?
Hello Melissa, Thank you for your comment. Of course all shikibuton will compress over time, however, regular care and hanging your shikibuton will help slow that process. Hanging your shikibuton in the warm sun for a few hours may help, but perhaps at this point you may need to add some additional cushioning underneath your shikibuton as this will have a big impact on the feel of your shikibuton. I have a jpns futon but Before I realized the cover the futon comes with unzips (the one that holds the insert in place), I was trying to spot clean some stains off of it with water and detergent. Then I realized I could unzip the cover and put it in washer but now the insert has is damp/a little greasy from detergent. How do I get this out ? If I airdry it will it dry on its own or stay greasy/damp ? I don’t want to add even more water to it if the insert shouldn’t get wet 😢

Do you have to actually hang it out in the sun? I live in Las Vegas and we get a lot of sun here. Can I just leave the blinds open and let it bleed onto the futon?

Hi, I am looking for advice, I am not able to access your websites, did the address changed? I own a woolen futon with coconut fibre insert inside for extra firmness, however after using it for about 1.5 year I find it far too heavy to move it around never mind dragging it out to air. I was thinking of removing the coconut fibre and removing some wool to make it lighter (it is also too soft), Do you think it is possible? I have a futon frame that can fold but was thinking of puting the futon directly on the carpet. Any advise will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Do you get different fabrics every now and then?
Yes, we typically do, however, since Covid-19 this has been disrupted quite a bit. We honestly do not know how long it will take for this to go back to "normal" if it ever does. The fabrics we have should be fairly stable for awhile. We do plan to add a dragon pattern in the future if we can find one we feel fits our website. Unfortunately we cannot give you any specifics at this time.

It is likely that tatami would be okay on your carpet, but there may be movement where two tatami join together. It they are fairly heavy so they may smash the carpet a bit. Tatami isn't absolutely necessary and as long as your carpet is clean and dry it would likely be okay. Tatami do not have a lot of cushioning value as they are fairly firm. Hello Wolfy1091, Thank you for your question. The first step is to make sure you get a high quality shikibuton with high-grade cotton that is more resilient and sheds moisture well. Next make sure you're hanging it regularly. The best is to hang it outside in the sun, but if that is not possible, hang it in the sunniest area in your place. The key thing here is to get it up off the floor so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture and re-fluff. Over time all cotton shikibtuon do compress to some degree. If you feel you need additional cushioning, we would recommend that you add a trifold pad underneath. Finally, we do not recommend placing your futon on hard wood or laminate flooring as not only this too firm of a surface, but it tends to introduce moisture for some reason.
i have a cotton and memory foam hybrid futon and its had some spills on it before i could afford a waterproof cover and I dont really know how to clean it if i even can. what can i do to remove the stains and make sure none of the stuff spilled is lingering on the inside? would it be able to be washed by a professional cleaner or would it be ruined if it was washed?
Honestly we wouldn't know the limitations of a memory-foam filled futon. For an all-cotton futon we generally recommend spot washing with a wet cloth. However, if it is spilled soda or urine, etc. where it is absorbed and a lot it may require a complete washing. However, this decision to do so should be based on the only alternative is to throw it out. Hello Caitlin Purple, Thank you for contacting us. In colder climates -- especially in winter, it is not good to hang your shikibuton outside. It is better to hang inside in the sunniest area in your space while away or at work. The key thing is to get your shikibuton up off the floor so that air can flow around it and it can shed moisture. Also, in winter months when furnaces/heaters are running a lot this dries the air which is a better environment for futon. In times of higher humidity it is important to hang futon regularly to get it up off the floor. UV rays kill microorganisms and bed-bugs, etc.. This is why hanging your shikibuton in the sun when you can is best. I hope this is helpful.

Simply drape your shikibuton over a folding laundry rack or some chairs in the sunniest area in your place while you're away or at work in this case. The important thing is to get it up off of the floor and allow air to flow around it.
How often should I flip the futon out?
Wholost I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "flip your futon out." If you mean flip it over, actually you don't. If you have one of our futon or a traditional one that is similar, it goes quilting strings up. You can rotate it head to foot if you wish, but really don't need to if you have a quality one. What is important, however is regularly hanging your futon out in the sun if possible, or at the very least get it off the ground and drape it over some chairs in the sunniest area of your place.

The most important thing is to keep your futon dry. This is why hanging your futon out is so important. If you can't hang it outside, then please drape it over a folding laundry rack or some chairs in the sunniest area in your place while you're away or at work. It is important to allow air to flow around it so it can shed moisture. If you shikibuton is dirty/stained and needs cleaning a steamer might work, however this will introduce a lot of moisture into your futon and you definitely need to make sure it is completely dry through-and-through before using it again.

We looked at this, however, and found that it is much more cost effective for you to order tatami mats in your own country because they are quite bulky/heavy to ship just 2-3 tatami overseas. Can you wash with your hands
Hello Fatima, Thank you for your inquiry. We do not recommend you wash your shikibuton. If needed you can "spot wash" them with a wet clothe, however, we do not recommend soaking your entire futon unless an animal/baby has urinated on it (or spilled soda, or similar) and the only other option would be to throw your futon away. It is very important that if you do wash that it is hung until completely dry through and through before sleeping on it or packing it away.
