Since the IGUSA tatami mat series is made of rush, the mats can become moldy if used in basements, areas with high humidity (such as mountainous or coastal districts), or rooms that are not used very much, are generally closed, and have poor ventilation.
There is no need for worry about mold growth with the TOKYO and ZEN tatami mat series.

You can use a dehumidifier in your room like I do or you can fill a wool sack with calcium chloride (cotton bags work too) and place it in a corner of the room. Calcium chloride has been used as a dehumidifier long before modern science gave it it's name.

Different areas of the country, even the world have areas in which humidity is a huge problem (the California desert in Blythe CA, the swamps of Louisiana, etc).
These humidity issues are seasonal yet can greatly effect your home in negative ways.

So glad I found you! Great tips, thank you. Do we need a tatami mat to properly use Japanese futon for sleeping? I was just going to buy the futon and be sure to air it out everyday.
You should ideally have tatami mats with your futon. It helps air circulation and I don’t think the futons get flattened as much with a tatami mat.
When using a tatami mat for a bed why not just lean the mat against the wall when not in use? Then it won't absorb too much moisture no matter what surface you put it on.

@@MrKaje72 I did a bunch on research. Basically it’s not optimal since carpet can trap moisture and this can cause the mat to mold over time. Best to put them on a hard surface.
I was wondering if use of Tatami mats in the floor of a camping trailer would work. It would be convenient to have a couple of mats in a sleeping area and simply roll out a futon at night rather than having a built-in or fold-down bed.
I have two tatami mats in my teardrop trailer. They are the type that fold into thirds and are a bit long so I have one section folded under. I use two tri-fold foam mattresses on top. Since my dog sleeps on one, I have a sheepskin on that which gets the stuff he tracks in. I live in the Midewest and haven't had any issues with them. They do insulate the floor and I love the smell! I will have to see how well they hold up.
But what can you do it you already have mold in your tatami?

Yes but make sure you’re clean. They get dirty and you can’t really clean them so don’t walk on them with dirty feet or socks.
