The one luxury I won't give up is having a haircut at a good salon with a stylist that I know will do a good job. I don't color my hair or spend money on pedicures and manicures so I make room in our budget for a haircut every 6 weeks. Love your channel. You and Paul seem like a nice down to earth couple. Good advice in a non judgmental way.

Having fresh flowers on my home office desk and kitchen table brings me so much joy and, while it may seem like a frivolous expense to some, it’s something I still indulge in. I’ve come to learn which flowers will last almost 2 weeks looking nice and supplementing with baby’s breath or eucalyptus helps me make 2 bouquets under $10. (Trader Joe’s tends to have great prices too). 🌹

I do same! I love take a 2-dozen bunch of Costco roses and break them up into multiple arrangements around the house and bring some to the office (day job). How does even just a single flower make such an amazing difference to a room and mood! Don’t know but I love it. I don’t always want to spend the money on it, but maybe about once a moment; they last a good 2 weeks. Less than $1/rose. I love Costco.

Living a frugal lifestyle and tucking money away in a savings account is preparing you for a “rainy day “. After 40+ years of burning wood for our small passive solar house we are going to have to go to a different heating system. Burning wood is so much work, but my husband has been doing it faithfully all these years. Now we are older and no longer have the health to do the work involved in burning wood. Also the insurance companies are charging higher prices for people who burn wood or won’t insure you at all. We are information gathering about different home heating systems. This change is going to be a chunk of money, but it is our “rainy day “. We have money saved to meet this forced change in our life style. Thank you for being encouragers!

We have often done a fruit basket of counted fruit per person at Christmas time. We have done themed food baskets in which there are some standards but also non-standards and/ or expensive (ie dried legumes, pastas, jams/ jellies, rices, pancake/ waffle toppings). Meal baskets be it a breakfast, a complete dinner, etc...; of course by the time you buy the ingredients, there are usually left overs. Often our "baskets" aren't actual baskets but rather some sort of storage bin, a baking or other dish, etc..; love thrift store metal or ceramic colanders, special quality one of a kind pots, baking dishes, the big spaghetti bowls. One of our baskets included the ingredients to make humas, a recipie card, some canned beans, and even a bag of dried beans; making humas was on that person's "someday" list.
For us, baskets have often been some sort of a collection of similar things. (Truth be told, often with items purchased from the second owner (new but previously owned), used, sales, and clearance markets; and sometimes Depending upon the recipient and thier circumstances they may contain more everyday use items or more of the unusual, novelty, clever, or hard to find items. Anyone with a hobby, interest, favorite character, etc... can do with a basket of items themed to that. SET A DOLLAR LIMIT as baskets can add up pretty quickly.

My husband and I really enjoy going to a movie now and then. We built in entertainment money into our monthly budget. If there is a movie that we want to see in person, we go on senior day, which is Tuesday. It is buy one get one free for seniors and is usually an early movie matinee, so we call it our day date. We usually eat lunch before we go and take snacks in with us if we want snacks. This usually makes the movie about $15 total and we do this usually once a month. We really look forward to these days and enjoy them immensely.

I have a few auto-immune illnesses and nothing helps me more than alternative medicine (along with organic/grass-fed foods and lifestyle management). We are people who do not care what "the Jones'" have or how they live, so we do not go in to debt for anything. This allows us to afford this healthcare regimen. I've worked with dogs for years & it is astounding how many have teeth & skin issues nowadays or are diabetic or epileptic. In my opinion it is the commercial dog food being mostly wheat & other grains that dogs can't digest. My dog is 14yrs old & he has always been raw fed (b.a.r.f - biologically appropriate raw food) & he is super healthy & active for his age. It costs me $8-$12 a week to feed him (21kg dog, 400grams a day for his age). I shop specials & meal plan tubs with a variety of meats & fish for him once a week. Hope that helps someone reading the comments!

I love this question! We refuse to give up our large grocery budget amount. We are a married couple without children. We budget $1,700 monthly for groceries and use EVERY penny of it.
We do NOT eat any meals outside of our home - we make every meal and beverage at our home/ourselves so we save tons of money by not going out to eat or purchasing beverages. We do not drink alcohol, but we do drink coffee and tea which adds up if you eat out!
We also do not vacation. We each travel for work so having to travel for fun is t much fun for us, LOL! We save up that money and are planning to purchase some real estate, cash, in future.
We do not feel deprived or like we’re missing out on anything. We feel we have full, enjoyable lives for the most part 😊
We love watching your videos and getting your perspective and input. You both are mentioned around our home often when discussing avoiding food waste, grocery shopping and over all frugality. Keep these awesome videos coming, please!

That is amazing! Ok If I may ask...so your weekly budget for food is about $425 what would that consist of? Only organic produce, grass fed meats, organic chickens etc? I am so intrigued! That is so wonderful!

    • @LadyLocksley
      @LadyLocksley หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@FrugalMoneySaver I don’t mind the question one bit and you are pretty solid with your thoughts on how we spend our grocery money. We do purchase mostly organic produce, but not exclusively. I would say about 80-90% of our produce is organic. We do occasionally go to farmers markets where, I’ll be honest, I think the produce prices are astronomical, but we do like to support local farmers/produce growers…that food is typically not ‘certified’ organic and we are ok with that.
We will also buy meats, eggs and supplements (mushroom extracts, herbal teas or turmeric drink powders) form that farmers market at times and again, the prices are crazy high. For example, an organic whole chicken at the mainstream grocery store, like HEB grocery store, may cost $6.99/lb, a whole chicken from the farmers market is $12.99-14.99/lb. Again, we don’t not frequently buy our groceries at these prices but it can happen perhaps once a month or once a quarter. Otherwise, when at the grocery store like HEB or Sprouts, we do buy grass fed and pasture raised meat and eggs. We always look around and see what’s on sale and will occasionally stock up when we see good bargains. We have a 16 cu ft freezer that always has some sale meat and veg stocked.
We avidly work out and exercise daily, so we are focused on high protein intake with lots of veggies. We both have a few food allergies and intolerances so inexpensive go-to’s like rice and bread and potatoes is not always an option for us 😕😕😕
We do love those items though, but we suffer when we eat them unfortunately.
We go to the grocery store anywhere from 1-4 times a week depending on items needed. Sometimes, one of us has a real hankering for a certain salad blend and eats the entire container in two meals (ME! Hahaha) so we have to go back to HEB (our favorite grocery store) the next day to get more of the HEB store brand of organic baby spring lettuce salad mix. If we go frequently in one week, it’s only because we were only buying what we knew we would use and then used it up all lot quicker than we thought we would.
Also, sometimes we do buy some convenience items from Costco, such as pre-cooked, sliced, chicken breast; precooked chicken breast skewers; packaged mashed avocado; kimchi; and even boiled eggs; when we know we have a busy week and will not have the time to grill meat ourselves or boil eggs. Yes, we do get that busy with our jobs and work travel.
In short: we eat A LOT! For example, when I watch you plate your food, I always think, ‘now that’s what a portion should look like’. I would say I typically eat double what I see you plate for a meal; and my husband is easily eating 3-4 times the portions you plate up. So that’s some easy math on how we spend so much. We eat so much. Not a brag, just a fact. We have a mini-mantra that we would rather pay the farmer than the doctor 😃
We use food and movement as daily medicine and in our minds, aside from our salvation, there’s nothing more important than our health. Also, as you have stated many times, we each get to choose what we spend our money on - what’s important to us. This is our ‘thing’ and we work hard for our money and choose lots and lots of groceries that we eat right up 😁
Hope that was insightful enough to answer your questions. God bless you both and keep the awesome videos coming our way, please and thank you!

I have canceled many subscriptions, but our family friend who is also our lodger loves quality films as much as I do, so we are splitting costs on a membership to The Criterion Channel.
We spend a couple of sunny days a month trawling for free stuff not in ritzy areas, but high-end middle class areas and sometimes student areas. We have gotten for free a hammock, plants, plant pots, tea towels, books, expensive leather picture frames and throw cushions. We have also hauled away furniture in good condition.
We have a free library and patronize our areas free libraries, and of course the public library.
I photograph recipes from library books. (Twenty years ago I photocopied them.)
I cannot afford ten or fifteen dollar magazines. I find them at yard sales or thrift and file old issues by month in an expanding file. Magnolia, Martha Stewart, Real Simple, Sunset, Bon Apetit, and some UK mags are all waiting for me as a gift I give myself at the start of the new month.

Yes, no scrimping on healthcare insurance (luckily we have retiree healthcare insurance), homeowners, automobile, umbrella, long term care insurance, etc.
Careful to keep in mind that Cheaper is NOT always better when it comes to insurance companies and coverage. This also extends to buying big home items like HVAC, Roofing, Painting ,water Heaters,Refrigerators, Freezers, Washers, Dryers, etc. Research and do homework. All companies doing work should be researched as well.
Regular Home and Auto maintenance can save money too. Hopefully you can do it yourself to save but if needed pay someone if necessary. Ie, checking your roof/gutters yearly can ensure no leakage damage occurs, etc
Good video to share what you don’t scrimp on spending money but also saying what frugal ways to keep in mind

I am frugal but there are times of spending
Yesterday I did. My son needed shoes. I bought 6 towels at KOHLS for 4.99 each I needed to buy a hairdryer so it was tiny and 14.00 at Marshalls. Today, 2 tires for the car. Very much needed, 400.00. I will buy the rear tires in a month or so when I have the cash for those. I paid cash for all and all were very much planned.
I cut my own hair and do pedicures and manicures. Food is home cooked. I went paperless in the budget to pay necessities. Mow our own lawn.
Took on Minimalism in January and it has been immense. Being mindful and purposeful. Yes, I give to my church and to charity, and I rather give to others when in need than buy gifts.
Life is choices and priorities. Always prepare, and dont waste.

There's also a 'sharing shed' where people place any over abundance of garden produce for others to help themselves to quite near the little library. It works well for me as I don't have the room to grow veg but I can strike seedlings which I them place in the shed. Then I drift across the street and swap out my books.

Great tip about storing soap in your closet! I am going to do the same from now on. That totally makes sense the humidity in the bathroom can whittle them down a little. That’s a new one I learned so thanks! I live a frugal lifestyle so I can afford to travel and see live music. When I travel I tend to stay in small family-owned inns or I rent airbnbs so I have a kitchen and can cook meals. I save going out for special meals or little treats vs having to go out to eat all the time when traveling. Back home I rarely dine out. Great video Emmy and Paul, as always.
Some ways I refuse to give up in the name of frugality,
    1, my coffee.
I refuse to buy a brand of coffee that I do not like just because it's cheaper. I have a specific brand that I do like, and I always wait until it's on sale and then of course I stock up.
Another thing is flea medication for my dogs. And I recently found an online site that I can purchase their flea medication for less than half what I can buy it for here at the pharmacies or with a veterinary clinic or something.
Another is I also plant perennials same as you Emmy.
Continuing in the outdoor theme, I also buy hummingbird food. I was purchasing it ready-made but found I can buy it cheaper if I buy the concentration and I may get myself. It's not hard to mix, to save some money. And I love watching my hummingbirds out my window.
There are some foods that I am brand loyal to, but even those will not be bought if the price is too high. But I will not settle for a brand that I do not like. I am a fan of tuna. My brand of choice is bumblebee. Recently I've noticed that the cans have gotten smaller, as well as more expensive. So I have a set price in my mind, that I'm willing to pay and I will not go over that amount. So if the can of bumblebee tuna I want to buy is more than I'm willing to spend, then I just don't buy it. I will wait until it's marked down and then I will stock up.
Another thing I do that a lot of people also do to be frugal is that I always take my lunch to work. I don't buy it out. I almost never eat out. And to help make my lunches more appetizing for myself, I make sure that I have good quality lunch box, thermoses, double wall containers and things like that that help keep the cold stuff cold and the hot stuff hot. Yes sometimes buying these double wall containers can be a little bit pricey, but you only have to buy them once. And you certainly don't have to buy them at places like Starbucks where they want maybe 20 to $30 for a double wall insulated cup with lid. Walmart has them much cheaper and they work excellent. I've also gotten some nice tall double wall water bottles from Costco. Of course I wait till they're on sale. Most recently got two for only $15. Not $15 each, $15 for two of them. And these are so good, believe it or not I can fill one with ice water, leave it in my car overnight in 114° weather and the next day it will still be cold and still have ice in it even when I don't go to work until 5:00 in the evening. So it sits all day in the hot hot sun here in Central California and it will still have ice in it. That's how good these things are. So well worth the price. I guess what I'm trying to say is buying quality even if it's a little bit more expensive if something I will not give up on. Now Emmy, I have a question for you, I know you don't have a microwave, so my question is when you want to heat up leftovers how do you do it? I'm not talking about something like soup, because I know that's easy to heat up. But what if you want to heat up say some leftover casserole, or leftover lasagna, or pot roast, or meatloaf, things like that how do you warm them up? It's a serious question I'm not trying to be a smart aleck, I have a microwave and I use it everyday. I think it's wonderful that you don't. But really how do you warm things up? I'm just curious. Love your channel. You guys are so down to earth, and I love that. Keep up the good work.

Hello. To answer your question about the microwave. I have not used one in over 30 years myself. I have a toaster oven and it only takes a couple minutes to warm the leftovers up. Maybe three minutes. Maybe five or seven minutes but that’s about it. And it actually tastes much better and is much more healthier for you than using the microwave. I hope this helps you.

So I will look to henna next time. I bake. I never buy any cookies or muffins. Due to sodium intolerance I bake salt free. I make all meals never eat out. Extremely rare its too expensive. Baby hypoallergenic wipes. Toothpaste.

@@FrugalMoneySaver Right? Iv had ppl eating my food its 4 years I am cooking salt free and no one can tell. Spices and garlic are key and once you start browning more, caramelizing and adding to raw ingredients it makes the differrnce. I miss using lots of parmiggiano, but it is salty. I use nutritional yeast instead and its very good! Dehydrated veggies are also key. I miss the freedom to not think so hard about foods prepared outside the home like pizza or chinese takeout. But iv learned to create high flavour foods like Indian which are so good home made. Making naan, butter chicken, samosas or onion bhajis is amazing because its $55 a person to enjoy Indian food here. With $110 plus tips and taxes, I can make so much food for that money. I can freeze it for several meals maybe 12-15 portions. Do the work once eat many times! And making butter chicken in a crock or instant pot is very very possible bulk!
I also get to use less salt in pizza dough, and bread if I make it myself. Today I might mix uo some focaccia for tomorrow. Let it do its thing in the fridge.

My old one died a while ago, so I was reading on my phone or ordering large print books from the library, as I read in bed and find glasses uncomfortable to wear then. I didn't like reading on my phone as I was too tempted to check messages and things, when I was supposed to be relaxing and getting ready to sleep. I love real books but the Kindle is so comfortable to hold and I love being able to adjust the font. I rarely buy books for the Kindle -- I get them at the library and never have to leave the house -- but it did come with a 3 months subscription to Kindle Unlimited, so lots of books to read. Yes, I made a note to cancel when the 3 months is up. This is worth it to me because I love reading and will get so much use and enjoyment from this. I am trying to give pet owners an option if they can't afford the expensive stuff hope. You are not bad pet parents for buying grocery store brands.

I buy my clothes at thrift stores why pay 60.00 on a pair of jeans when you can get them for 5.00. Also I buy in bulk when on sale and always keep a full pantry for emergency. Always tithe first and the return is priceless. Have a great weekend and wonderful next week. Stay safe

Hi Emmy! Hi Paul! Sausage & peppers is on the menu for tonight. Using the peppers from my Flashfood box. I froze a lot, too, for future meals. I made delicious eggplant parm with the eggplant from that same box. I'm not a huge fan of eggplant, but it turned out fantastic! Paul without guitar strings is like a day without sunshine! He's so talented. We need to see a few snippets of him playing, please. 😊

We take vacations. Usually just one big one each year. And we go to Major League Baseball games atound the country. Our goal is to go to every stadium. We take snacks, breakfast food, and drinks with us (if we drive) to save money on food. We dont buy tickets for the best seata in the house, but we still enjoy ourselves. And we don't go to fancy restaurants. We do buy some souvenirs, but nothing extravagant. We really enjoy seeing new places and learning about the culture of each city we visit. This year we are saving over half of our budget by staying with family. Everything we save will roll over to a trip next year that requires flying.

Two things my husband and I refuse to give up are the area of town where we live because it is so much safer and our cats because they bring constant joy to us. Regarding housing, we afford this by living in an apartment, albeit a nice one, but it's still an apartment. We love it, and it's worth every penny. We afford the cats by keeping up vet appointments and paying a little extra for good food to stave off any potential health issues that could come up. Case in point: I had an older cat that was acting like he didn't feel well, and once he bit me on the face when I tried to kiss his face (something he NEVER did), I knew there was a problem. Ended up he had an infected tooth that had to be removed. A second surgery was needed because the stitches broke open. It cost a fortune, but more than that, he suffered and I felt horrible. Needless to say, my boys are going in for their first cleaning next month. It's going to be expensive, but I'm doing it during Tooth Month at the vet so prices will be less, and it's still cheaper than a tooth surgery and no pain involved.

My non-negotiable: I've worked with dogs for years & it is astounding how many have teeth, ear & skin issues nowadays or are diabetic or epileptic. In my opinion it is the commercial dog food being mostly wheat & other grains that dogs can't digest. My dog is 14yrs old & he has always been raw fed (b.a.r.f - biologically appropriate raw food) & he is super healthy & active for his age & nevers needs the Vet. It costs me $8-$12 a week to feed him (21kg dog, 400grams a day for his age). I shop specials & meal plan tubs with a variety of meats, offal, necks, wings, & fish for him once a week. Hope that helps someone reading the comments!

Gift baskets are a great way to go, many years ago I made Christmas gift baskets for my prayer kids ( hs) at my childrens school, one gift for a teen boy, who I didnt know, contained some of his favorite candies, a pair of house socks( thick black socks) to help keep your feet warn durring winter and some homemade cookies& brownies,I had my teen girls help me "wrap" it clesr celephane tied sroundwith school color ribbons, that year I got to make 3 basketsmy budge was $40 for 3 baskets, pluss the fillings. The young man was out of town on a school trip, so his mom came by afterschool on her way home from work, mrsC. Spent way to much!, if she only knew The other 2 baskets( for teen girls) contained house socks, candy home made cookies, brownies ect, clearance bath jell along with a bath puff. Baskets in my area like those sell for around$50 in Dec. it was all in the presentation.😊

Thank you for another informative video!! One thing my husband and I can't live without isn't a thing, but Date Day and summer weekend road trips. We've adjusted our lifestyle around it, because for us going fishing, camping, exploring areas all around us is so important to who we are. We afford it by setting a limit each day, planning the days out in advance (eating affordably, a lot of free nature oriented things), and in the winter we completely hibernate! By making a spreadsheet for the year, we are able to divide the spending properly and know what to expect when the summer hits.

I make pizza once a week, but what I do is get a pizza dough from Trader Joe's, it's about $1.49. We don't consume dairy so I make veggie pizza with whatever veggies I have and left over homemade sauce. I can make it quickly and it's economical and nutritious! These days you need two cars, especially in case something happens to one, you have the other one to rely on. My car is a 2008 Toyota Corolla, it has 55,000 miles on it. I wouldn't buy expired food either. Once it expires, it starts to grow mold, which can make you very sick, especially if you have allergies. There's a reason they have expiration dates.

Thanks for sharing. Every family must decide what to spend on and what to save on. Each person had their own frugal and financial journey.
We try to save 20 to 25% from our retirement income for our sinking funds.
    Health care is so important.
I like the idea of trading one luxary for another one.
We look for clothes from thrift shops locally. Plus I still have some clothes 20 years old. I get the most compliments on those dresses. We only give gifts to only our close family and close friends. We do buy good cat food for 2 kitties. And we feed birds, too.

We refuse to give up Miracle Whip, Heinz ketchup or Nabisco Premium Saltines! lol We do not compromise on tires for our vechicle, Right now because we have such a wonderful insurance agent, we do not shop around for auto, life and homeowners insurance, Other companies may have great prices but I want to be taken care of immediately when a claim has to be made. My agent is my friend as well, so not giving that up. Not staying in a cheap hotel . We are willing to pay a little more for security and clean rooms. I am sure I can come up with some more things I am not willing to compromise on., but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Love that you feed the wildlife! Me too! I sometimes laugh if you look at a whole outfit on a website or Pinterest, etc. If you click on those items each one is usually at least $50, so I love how you thrift similar items. Me too! I've been thrifting for so long the thought of spending hundreds of dollars on any clothes items is just crazy to me. Yeah, I can't imagine anyone walking in your home and you not trying to feed them. You ARE Italian, right? lol One thing I spend money on, and don't feel guilty about, is yarn for when I'm knitting or crocheting a project for me or someone else. Oh boy, I have a bunch of “must haves” so guess I’m a bit of a diva😄.
#1 - Good quality chocolate. I used to stock up at after-holiday clearance sales and still buy a bit that way but I’ve discovered Trader Joe’s Pound Plus bars and now they are my preferred chocolate. At less than $6 for more than a pound of Belgium chocolate it’s priced better than lower quality chocolate and definitely makes me happy 😊!
#2 - Quality cookware. When we were just married and didn’t have much money I bought cheap pots and pans that had to be replaced every few years. About ten years ago I bought a set of good quality stainless steel cookware for $100 at a pre-Christmas sale. Then seven years ago I started working for a high-end cast iron cookware company and filled in any holes in my kitchen collection using my employee discount. I advise young people to start with good quality kitchen equipment that will last, even if it means buying one pot or pan and making it work in unusual ways.
#3 - Farm fresh eggs. I’m spoiled but I cannot eat grocery store eggs anymore, though I’ll use them for baking. We have some chickens but our younger girls haven’t started laying yet so we still have to buy eggs. Fortunately, I have a few good sources and pay just $3 a dozen, which makes them just a little more expensive than those from Aldi.
#4 - Chai Lattes. I enjoy one most days but I always make my own using concentrate and I’ve played with the ratio of concentrate-to-milk so that I’m happy 2-to-3 parts. I also drink a smaller amount so my $4 carton of concentrate is good for ten servings rather than the five they want you to drink. My 6-ounce mugful is just the right amount for me and saves money and calories!

@@FrugalMoneySaver I use Spiced Chai Latte from Oregon Chai. I like the extra spiciness to balance the sweet. I’ve also used Tazo regular chai concentrate. They are both good. My daughter had a roommate whose family immigrated from India and she taught my daughter to make chai lattes from scratch. It takes too much time first thing in the morning though, lol
