This video shows that in the role that this device is supposed to play...is wholly inadequate as even a novice could notice that the gap looks different on one of the 10 digits of each roll. Even a child can recognize basic shapes. It's common for companies to develop products of different quality for different audiences and uses - consumer grade is usually cheap with basic preventative measures, while industrial grade typically is far more expensive due to tighter tolerances, hardened steel and thicker mechanisms. It's not expected for a potential thief to bring a loud, easily visible power grinder to your neighbor's shed, but it is expected that a business that can house far more valuable items could be a target of such, so the lock is engineered in a way that delays most intrusion attempts. TLDR; cheap locks are always cheap, and while this video shows a completely useless lock, not all MasterLocks are quite this useless. I really enjoy your channel. You have educated me on locks to the point I never knew possible. I don't have a need for high security locks or a business I need to lock up, just part of the public that is one step smarter because of the selfless videos you provide for us to enjoy. And on a side note my best friend locked himself out of his houseboat and it uses a quickset style home lock with 5 pins. Because of you and all of your videos I picked my first lock with a really small flat head screwdriver and a really small allen wrench as the pick. Your voice in my head the whole time...now my friend thinks I'm a spy...lol
It's not that you can't make something like this secure, it's that doing it would cost money and eat into their profits. He could pull this one off because of how sloppy the tolerances are. Good tolerances cost money.
No, this channel should teach you not to buy a $20 lock to protect your $10k+ items. Also that, given time, nothing is impenetrable. Ideally you just need to be less enticing of a target than the next person.
Remember, your stuff doesn't have to be completely safe. It just has to be harder to get to than your neighbor's. Thieves always go for the easiest target. A relatively cheap Sesamee padlock with 1-2 security pins will handle most petty thieves (Spool pins prevent raking and bitch picking so while they wont stop LPL they'll still slow down the average thief) and that is really all you need to worry about for everyday use. If you need more security than that, make sure your doors are reinforced and your windows are bullet proof first, because security is only as strong as the weakest link.
I always check your channel before buying a lock, but for some reason this time forgot to when I was looking for a portable safe and bought this one off Amazon. Luckily, as some recent commenters have pointed out, Master Lock seems to have quietly fixed the issue shown here because newer versions of this model like I received no longer have the visible gate or really any gap at all. That makes me relieved that I didn't make the worst possible choice. For those considering this, make sure you get a new version; I suggest buying from Amazon and making sure you are buying it new (not used) and sold by Amazon (not from any other seller, even if shipped by Amazon) to maximize the chance of getting a fixed version.
You’ve made a follower out of me with this video. I found one of these at a local thrift store for $5 and was warned that there were 10k possible combinations. Made it to 2,000 before someone suggested your channel. 1 minute after watching this I had it open and found $402 inside!
Damn, I'm going to need therapy after watching these LPL videos! They make me so depressed that none of these locks are unpickable! Now I have to sit home with my 115 pound shelter dog all day to guard my stuff. And I know he'll tear up my house when I'm gone to get my therapy because he has separation anxiety. I give up.
The scary thing is that you could do that in broad daylight and it wouldn't look out of place. Any casual observer would probably think you were just looking at the dials and opening it normally.
TYVM for this. I bought one used for $5 at the swap meet today, and I messed up setting the combo and couldn't get it open. I couldn't do it as easy as you, I couldn't see well even with a light shining on it, and took 10min+, but I finally got it open, and have since correctly set it. Saved me from a smashed and broken $5 paperweight so TY.

One of these days these lock companies will wise up and hire LPL for quality control.
Heck! They need to hire him for Senior Design Engineer and fire all of the others!
They need some Iris scan technology safe boxes
They'll toss him gobsmack tons of cash to simply go silent and shut down this channel.
It's not that you can't make something like this secure, it's that doing it would cost money and eat into their profits. He could pull this one off because of how sloppy the tolerances are. Good tolerances cost money.
Congratulations on trending! You’ve earned it.
This channel has convinced me locks are crap and I should just leave all my valuables out on the front lawn for safe keeping. Anyone else?
Nicholas M Well bolt cutters generally open the lock
I'm so glad LPL is in trending i watch this channel everyday and i always marvel at the skill he has thats so underappreciated
Next video: Master Lock product opens itself after being looked at by LPL.
Face recognition lock with sloppy tolerances
When the lock guts itself when LPL is near it, I'll be impressed.
@@rioghander2te Iirc there was a case where a chinese woman had a friend who was able to just unlock her phone with a face recognition lock.
It’s even worse than bill made it look
It’s absolutely a complete waste of Materials
You’ve made a follower out of me with this video. I found one of these at a local thrift store for $5 and was warned that there were 10k possible combinations. Made it to 2,000 before someone suggested your channel. 1 minute after watching this I had it open and found $402 inside!
Damn, I'm going to need therapy after watching these LPL videos! They make me so depressed that none of these locks are unpickable! Now I have to sit home with my 115 pound shelter dog all day to guard my stuff. And I know he'll tear up my house when I'm gone to get my therapy because he has separation anxiety. I give up.
He has finally reached it !!! ULTRA INSTINCT!!!!
"Safe" in quotes. I like that subtle burn!
You are actually doing a public service. Thank you for all the great vids. Gotta tell you I’m not into picking locks but use your videos to review potential purchases. Once more... thanks lpl
This is the LockPickingLawyer, and today I will be intimidating a master lock into giving up it's combination...
I’ve got one of these from 10 years ago it’s been sitting locked for a long time. Thanks to your video I got it open today w/o breaking it. Thanks!
When you hear him almost chuckle at the end, you KNOW it's a bad lock!
That's such an insecure feeling..i worked for Best Locking Systems many years ago.. (key/lock coder) the creator of the master and sub master system.. it's all in how the pins fall.. not always but I've been able to use a paperclip to get inside an office building before. (Not BLS). and when i told my boss, the company changed every single lock in the building.. i really like this channel✌
Just got my lock pick set in and already popped the practice lock about 10 times!
Thanking you for the pointer not buying that thing, now to try it on a briefcase that we have not been able to open for years, we shall see.
Lance & Patrick.
If you don't have a feeler gauge, strips of paper work well. Many Kensington-style laptop and briefcase locks can be decoded with just paper. And it's just paper, rather than tools that might cause problems.
I've had one of these for years. It's an amazing hard case to keep things together and from getting crushed but no, it is not any sort of security at all
Thank you for keeping all your videos short and concise
if i need a lock to just keep people honest i'll buy a pack of 3 padlocks from harbor freight that are roughly the same price as one master lock, i treat them as re-useable zipties
There's actually a few decent styles of actual reuse able nylon cable ties/zip ties/zap straps to choose from these days... I die a little more inside every time someone at work cuts another one instead of just opening it up like any resourceful thrifty smart person would...
@@NoPegs cheap padlocks are better than reuseable zipties for when you want to prevent someone nosy or a opportunistic klepto from rooting around in your stuff
@@SuperAWaC you can also pay a random homeless guy 20 bucks to just watch your bike it pretty much works as well XD
@@chaosryans that's how I ended up with $20 and a new bike the other day
@@chaosryans, When I worked in Seattle there was a homeless guy who essentially lived in a theater's outdoor emergency exit stairwell on the west side of the lot where I parked. We had a deal, I dropped off occasional homemade lunches for him and gave him a few bucks every now and then. He watched my car for me.
The madman has finally done it I’m speechless. Literally opened on sight
Incoming Amazon Choice recommendation
Looks like the Lock Picking Lawyer is on TH-cam's top 5 trending videos as of Aug 19, 2019.
love the channel. A nice addition would be, following you breaking in, is your suggested recommended option. I like the idea of this product.
IT WORKS!!!!
So, I have this safe. I work on the road white often and it gives me slight piece of mind I can put some things in here if I don’t want it left out in my hotel room while I’m gone. However, i put
My Apple Watch in it and I, of course, I forgot my password and couldn’t for the life of me remember it. I was about to take it to work and cut it open. This trick saved me from having to do that! Thank you!!!!!! I’m not subscribed to your channel!
Master Lock does it again.
@@sleeptyper Their locks are very reliable, for thieves that is.
"If someone can open this without any tools, it's probably made by Masterlock". I swore that's how I thought that line was going to come out!
It will however guard against "blind thieves" so there's that
Even blind thieves know about the thin piece of metal you could decode this with.
Richard Turner has entered the chat.
I just ordered my first lock picking tool kit, thanks to you :)
He’s almost ascended to the point where he’ll be able to open the locks without even touching them.
This guy is the best lawyer ever!! Dont even have to wait for the trial, he just picks your handcuffs and away you go
I have one of these that I got years ago. Mine doesn't have a big gap- I can't see anything behind the number at all.
Mine must be defective haha.
Same here actually
Maybe send it in for repairs. The guys at master lock need to file those gaps open.
Same here I locked it on myself and I don’t see any gaps
I bought one of these to carry my medicine on vacation and I didn't really trust the people I was staying with!
I locked it to my bed!
Lol! I had no problems, but thank you for showing me how easy.
My thoughts are, I'm only stopping the "idle curiosity " people!😁
"in any case..."
Well, y'know, not *this* case...
Now this is going to be the greatest lock in the country that will make America's locks great again!
Is this video for all the people in your comments making jokes about you looking at a lock and it opening?
Great video, as always.
I got locked out of my box a year ago, thank you so much. I just got back in it because of this video.
random toddler at the beach: Well look at those f-ing gates I can see
This guy is a genius. I wish he made some step by step tutorials on how to do it and explain how locks work in general.
Yaniv Johnson thanks, I’m checking him out. It’s a fun skill to have no doubt.
Has Masterlock ever produced a product that you didn’t easily defeat?
Before they were bought by a Corpo, yes. They were a reputable brand. But as usual with Corpos, they got acquired, and ruined for profit. It's the only thing they are able to do, buy themselves out of mediocrity. As far as i'm concerned, they are a disease on this planet and should be dismantled faster than you can snap your fingers, we're not going in a good direction with this monopoly from shadows.
Check out vid 479, a Master Lock with actually decent pining made of plastic. I know the pining is kind of necessary considering its purpose, but still.
The plastic LOTO model was an oddly decent core
The original #3
I’m a locksmith, just used this and it worked great.
i dont know why this is in trending... but now im into some new content. so thank you!
Opened a Master Lock Lock Box couple years ago, I had to use Glasses. A good set of eyes may not need them. Good work.
I just bought this a day ago for my dorm.. only to see it trending on yt on how to decode it🤦🏾♀️
Hope you send it back.
Send that ass this way 😘
Thank you for your insight and investigative results. Millions are made on a false since to security. We need to know.
Please take this video down. I don't need my kids to see it and pick mine open to find my weed stash. Thank you.
My parents would have whipped my as for breaking and entering..
MasterLock never ceases to disappoint
I dunno. I'm certainly not disappointed by this video about Master Lock. Then again, I don't have this product...
They must have updated it. I used a flashlight and a utility blade and still couldn’t see or feel the gate.
Yup, the one I received today was the same.
They've outdone themselves boys, in a heroic attempt to save the environment by encouraging not using tools that wear out, like thin metal pieces, they're blessed us with this lock
New "storage case" for all of your Master locks. No key or combo necessary to retrieve them! Lol
who would downvote such informative videos as the LPL? 450 downvotes? Utter joke. Only idiots or trolls would downvate an LPL video. Keep up the great work LPL!
That would be 450 employees at MasterLock.
That looks like a caboodle you would keep markers in
The best thing about Masterlock is that it gives you opportunities to brag about your cool lock picking skills
LPL must be one of Master Lock's best customers - he gets so many of their products.
Or ... maybe not "best". LOL
I stongly doubt they are his biggest fan.
@@arnoldhau1 I suspect Amazon don't like him much either...
@DefinitelyNotDan That's the worst bit: it does sell. They turnover $44M pa... Kwikset manages $143M pa which is a good sign, I guess.
Thanks for this. My dad had locked up some things that belonged to my mom to get back at her. She has them now :)
Are there any good combination locks you'd recommend? Anytime I've seen one on your channel or BosnianBill's it was decoded in less than a minute with either that shim or by just putting tension on the mechanism and feeling for the gate. Is that something all combination locks are vulnerable to or are there some better designs out there? And if it's the latter, how do you spot the better ones?
Meh
Big fan of short and sweet videos. 2 thumbs up for this.
