This is something I felt too a couple of months ago, been trying to get to know myself better, more now than ever before and its awesome. I've always been pointed as the class-clown and have always had joy in that, making people genuinely laugh feels great, but something always felt off, as if no one would ever take me serious because of that same trait.
Learning to balance out my behaviour, accepting my negative traits, recognizing my mistakes, APOLOGIZING, but never failing to be confident at my reasonings, and so for the first time I had someone call me wise, and this feeling of accomplishment feels AWESOME. Being kind to people is tough in a society where everything, everyone, even time itself is constantly trying to bring you down, but trying to leave that behind, focusing on improving yourself and getting results out of it, its one of the best investments you may have in any career, far beyond just game development, its a life lesson.

Good for you for being able to admit a flaw that most people can't. And you're totally right that it's not faking it if you want to be a good person. It's just practice, like anything else. Listening, learning how to correct your path, just trying to help people, all fantastic skills we sometimes develop early, and far too many eschew completely. But always good skills to improve even for your own sake.

I've been slowly learning game development on my free time, and I never finished college. I wish I could just jump into the intdustry and learn from a group of people but I feel like I need more than just a can do attitude and a nice smile.

this video gave me some hope that maybe im still hireable after all, even if im not extremely skilled..
i try alot to be a pleasant person to be around and to not be hurtful.
at the same time i worry alot if my future is completely doomed since i have alot of issues functioning in school..
knowing it can help in my career as a game developer is actually alot of comfort.
also i think being a nice or pleasant person to be around isn't necessarily a thing you're born with, nor is being a jerk.
we might be born insensetive but i guess we learn how to become a pleasant person to be around is something we learn through experience.
thanks for the video man, made my day!

though honestly i wouldn't know whether jerkness or niceness comes through nature or nurture actually, don't take my word for that.. i'm no psychologist, neurologist or psychiatrist..

I'm telling you haptic people are crazy... I had a guy who would send me contracts that said Valve stole his work and wanted me to sign it... like hey by the way, can you sign this...

The common saying about getting jobs is "it's not what you know, it's who you know", and that's entirely true. The bad side of that is nepotism, but most of the time, it's not that, it's just that if you're picking someone to work with, you're picking a person that you're likely going to be spending dozens/hundreds/thousands of hours interacting with over the subsequent months/years. Why wouldn't you prefer to choose an individual that you've already had good experiences interacting with, or who have been vouched for as decent by other people that you trust. So get to know people, and be the kind of person that others will vouch for.

Those people who single out the top dog in the org and start brown nosing have a fundamental misunderstanding of where the power in politics come from. People are in those important positions only because other people respect them and want to work with them, and those people generally understand that one man does not rule alone and they know they need the help of others to do the really impressive stuff. That's not to say their aren't some cavaliers out there who are able to do some mind bending technical stuff and get by on that alone, but if you're just a normal person like you and me then you are probably going to need help, and that requires that people like you enough to give you assistance and back you up if things don't go as well.
So, if you want to succeed, it's really quite simple; don't be a prick.

This is terrible advice Chet. Some people can just choose not to like you for whatever reason. The majority of people, even people who work at retail and say they hate how customers act when they approach them, are usually nice people. They are usually talking about people who act like assholes to retail workers for whatever reason. And most people are smart enough to know this. When it comes to any job, people can just not hire you because they don't like you. There is nothing stopping anyone from doing just that. Sorry, I thought I had to say something on this.

Are you saying you shouldn't be nice to people? This isn't me being an asshole I am just terribly confused what point you are trying to make.

@@monkeyniples9985 Oh, I guess retail workers aren't nice people. That's part of what I was saying. I don't know how you got "don't be nice to people" out of what I said. Nevermind then.
