Russia had lots of " Gershwins" - many of them active while George was alive. Horowitz, Gilels et al. often spoke about their contemporaries like Alexander Tsfasman and others who are virtually unknown in the West. Vlad and Emil were young men when the jazz age was at its peak and so it's no wonder they speak so fondly of this music and why Horowitz liked catching performances of Art Tatum.
I remember 25 years ago that poor scans of Kapustin scores were traded and a few people transcribed them by ear until properly published versions were made available outside Russia.

Thank you David for introducing me to Kapustin’s music - it’s a true revelation for me. I believe with proper exposure his music could become extremely popular.

Great review! Love to see Kapustin getting the recognition he finally deserves. You’ve earned a sub :)

I received my copy on the day the CD was released, and I strongly urge everyone to support, if possible, this extremely important project by Capriccio. I, for one, am certainly looking forward to hearing Frank Dupree performing all of Kapustin's piano concertos for Capriccio. However, if I've understood things correctly, I think Kapustin's first Piano Concerto has been lost. Can anyone shed more light on that?
(Having just done a quick bit of research, I see that Wikipedia's "List of Compositions by Nikolai Kapustin" references Kapustin's Concerto for piano and orchestra No. 1 as Op.2 (1961), and then later references Kapustin's Concerto for piano and orchestra No. 1 (2nd edition) as Op.147 (2012). So, it would seem that the concerto probably hasn't been lost, but was revised. If that's the case, it would certainly be interesting to hear it as there doesn't seem to be any performances of it anywhere on the internet).

agree he is a real find and the earlier CDs are among my most played recent purchases. Much gratitude to David Hurwitz for bringing this to our attention.

According to Kapustin himself in the book "Conversations with Nikolai Kapustin" by Tyulkova, Kapustin did actually record the original version of the first piano concerto with the Oleg Lundstrem orchestra, but the recording is lost in the Lundstrem archives. (probably catching dust in a studio somewhere in Moscow...) For the Op. 147 revision, he simplified the instrumentation.

@@musicboiscores Many thanks for that information. So it was Kapustin's recording of the original version of his first piano concerto that's been lost, not the score. That explains matters. I was aware that something had gone missing, but I assumed that it was the score. Thanks for clarifying. Much appreciated.

Kapustin is really really amazing, often it takes a couple of listens to kind of get it but when you do, they're some of the most fun cool pieces. I overlistened to piano concerto 4 so am excited for this new album!!

Thank you for your thorough review. It is important to have people who support alternative voices in the music.

I got hooked on Kapustin’s music when the first two Hyperion discs came out. The journey of discovery is very rewarding and new releases like this are gems. Well done Dave for the glowing review and well done to the pianists for getting their fingers round that evil prestissimo section in the slow movement of Op.104. A real whirlwind…!

Just listened to the 5th piano concerto. A masterful blend of popular idioms without ever becoming populist.

In general, the mix of jazz with orchestra isn’t my cup of tea. But I just listened to Concertos 2 and 5 and found them very entertaining. I like Gershwin’s Concerto too. Kapustin himself was quite the virtuoso. His music deserves to be heard.

Hi Dave! I just discovered L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S by Nicholas Lens and Nick Cave on Deutsche Grammophon. Have you heard it? If so, what's your opinion about it? Maybe worth a video?
