My favorite composer!! I just don't get tired of listening to his music (and unsuccessfully trying to play it). So worth digging in and discovering these gems. Some of his later works need a bit of time to get into but otherwise, what a load of treasure!!
Thank you for covering Kapustin! All of his works are amazing. His Sax concerto is amazing wish you would cover a recording of it, if there is one in print now. Or his concerto for 2 pianos and percussion (a la bArtok) or any of his recordings of his solo works. His chamber works are great too. Could go on forever
This is an awesome recording of even more awesome Music (capital intended). I already loved Kapustin, this orchestral disc put him even higher on my chart. Thanks Dave for this!
Thanks for the video Dave! I just discovered Kapustin's works a few days ago and instantly fell in love with it. Imagine my surprise when you suddenly uploaded a video about him! Also, congrats on 11K!
thanks. Agree completely. Every time I listen to Rhapsody in Blue, I keep thinking how Rachmaninov told Gershwin at the premiere that he used a lot of the Russian concerto tradition. As I get older, the more I listen the more I see what Rachminov meant. Now here is the Gershwin influence on the Russian concert jazz tradition. At least that is what it sounds like to me.
Oh wow. This is certainly different. Giving this disc a listen as we speak. Then onto some Hyperion piano music discs that Ct recommends. What a find!! I am picturing myself in a jazz bar in NYC with the piano concerto playing. Excellent stuff!! So bizarre. A true mix of genres.
When you said there was a Kapustin video coming soon, I should have guessed it might be about this terrific release, which I snapped up the moment it appeared. Such great stuff! And an intro to so much more great stuff-Kapustin’s own recordings, Hamelin, Osborne, Angelov & del Piano, and the rest. I’ve been a huge jazz fan since my teens, so Kapustin’s capacity to meld these forms was such a blast to discover. Thrilled to see him get his debut on this channel-here’s hoping it sends newcomers scurrying to hear this magical stuff!
A few years ago I was listening to Nikolai Petrov's recording of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 here on TH-cam, and it recommended Petrov's recording of Kapustin's Piano Sonata No. 2. I was blown away by both the performer and the composer. Have regularly listened to Kapustin's work since then -- love it!
What wonderful stuff! Jazz is my first and foremost musical love, and I do enjoy some of the Gunther Schuller-era Third Stream stuff attempting to weave jazz and classical together, but Mr. Kapustin seems to have a very engaging approach all his own. Time to keep on listening! Incidentally Dave, mazel tov on hitting 11,000 subscribers.
Great video David ! Kapustin is a genius. Wasn't really familiar with his art but now I'm converted. I also recommend his Piano Sonata No. 2 by Marc-André Hamelin , a piano wizard if ever there was one. It's a live recital in Bremen from 1999 available right here on TH-cam. Check it out. Amazing !!
Thanks so much for this recommendation Dave. I tinker periodically with a couple of the etudes - must really get down to learning them properly - but had never come across any orchestral music of his. Just listened to the Piano Concerto, which is a true delight. So nice, in this age of too much darkness, to discover new music composed of pure joy. Okay, time for the rest of the disc as dinner gets made…
Oh boy what joyous fun! I’m not even into jazz that much usually but this is pretty great. This is the kind of brilliant mixing of genres that works so well.
The first two notes of the chamber symphony so badly reminds me of the first few notes of the 3rd mvmt. of the Haydn Trumpet concerto! Not sure if that has been intentional on the side of Kapustin!!
I love Kapustin, and have played and performed a good deal of his music over the past twenty years. Never get tired of it, it only gets better and better on closer acquaintance. But why waste your time on a modest talent like Kapustin when there's music by a thundering genius like Richard Nanes out there? When are you going to devote a video to him?
If by thundering genius you mean a recycler of boring, tinkly arpeggios topped with even more boring meditation-style “melodies”, then bring it on. But I guess you were joking when you made this comparison…please tell me you were joking….

Great to have this introduction. I recently became familiar with his name through some of his jazz piano etudes. Just amazing.

Just recently discovered Kapustin -- the "Russian Gershwin", as I call him! Fantastic composer. And that disc is the one I just got yesterday morning.
I saw this thumbnail and squealed with joy.

The clip reminds me of what DON ELLIS might have tried!
Mr Madorsky, if you know of any video maker who does for jazz what the irreplaceable David Hurwitz does for classical, kindly let me know!!!
@@pauldavidartistclub6723 I don’t, but if I stumble across one I’ll post it here!

Wonderfully, there will be a new album by Frank Dupree on Nikolai Kapustin, coming in February!

What a hoot! This recording is infectious!
Wow! This is new to me. How enjoyable!
What a revelation! Thank you!
I can't stop listening to the 4th concert! thank you david hurwitz for this great discovery
You're welcome. It's really catchy, isn't it?
@@DavesClassicalGuide It is indeed very catchy, I hope you review more records by this great composer
Oh no, ANOTHER composer I now have to investigate! My wallet hates you Mr Hurwitz but I LOVE YOU
Sounds good.

I wish Oscar Peterson, himself classically trained, had recorded some Kapustin. That would really swing
Thanks for the introduction. Id heard the name but (until now) none of his music.

@@dannymillington3015 Why would you even need to ask? Nanes is obviously pure garbage.
@@nb2816 Must have had a weak moment :)
Easy listening genre
Even if true (which it isn't) there's nothing wrong with that. Mozart is easy listening too.
