Hi I do this all the time and you have to be QUICK and I mean QUICK. I usually use two ppl to spray the colors so they are constantly moving once they set the enamel paint turns dry and sticks. Then after you get your color set you like you have five seconds to swirl the paint with a THIN stick. I like to use a spoon handle. hitting the sides of the buckets does NOTHING to spread and swirl the paint. Final tip when you dip keep the item under water and swish the paint away to the edges of the container with the 'spoon' being careful to NOT touch the item.. DO NOT have paint over it or it WILL recoat and the colors are NOT as diffuse as going in. Also to get the strings from being there gently move your object around under the water before pulling it out. I THINK I got all the tips I have. If you have anymore questions s feel free to ask. 💖 Have a merry yuletide and a wonderful new year! Warmest regards and best wishes, Michelle B.
Sorry but had to say this. I thought you guys was frequently too quick! On a serious note are there any paints that take longer to dry that you can use. Stuff like Hammerite takes ages but the colours are crap!
Michelle Bolen Michelle can you clear coat over this? And if so so how long do you have to wait? Also can this kind of dipping be used for wood? Obviously this guy has covered NONE of these topics... thanks
you have to be fast you spray and instead of spraying going grabbing the other just have all the colors next to you so you can switch or get 2 in each hand and do it and just spray and have the item your hydro dipping right next to you aswell and once done spray painting use a stick or something to swirl it if you want and then just go in at a slight angle and dip it, shake in the water and then pull it out
I used cold water from my garden hose and the outside temp was about 53. Dipped a tomahawk and my knife and both looked pretty good. Going to get some blanks like you did and experiment before I dip my rifle. I used rustoleum came series paints. You're stuff looks good for just beginning brother.
Hey BlueDog, thanks for posting that. I was researching this and found your link. I'm going to give it a shot on an old snare drum of mine to give it a unique look. Thanks again, keep on keeping on!
First use White pint, then the other colors you want to use. Start pulling your paint from the middle to the outside edge to anchor it in a few different area's. Then you can swirl it from any direction. Yes you have to be quick when doing it. Also, dip at an angle, hold it while clearing the paint from the top of the water and pull your item out at the same angle it went in. This is the same concept as water marbling for finger nails.
Thanks man, did you have a problem with the paint getting stringy when you stirred it? Mine just wanted to turn into a sticky goop on the end of stirrer (screwdriver lol)
The very first one that you did was the prettiest IMHO. The color combo was light and cheerful and made me smile. You could sell that one for good money or enter it in abstract art shows. Also I think your swirls were better BC your water was clean and didn't have leftover paint still in it. I think I will have a wide drywall knife to scrape the excess paint off the sides and a piece of cardboard to scrape the knife off of... I think it is the second dip that while you were spraying the paint, cartoon faces were morphing so fast That I am gonna watch again and share it. Thank you for posting this. I learned a lot. I am gonna do some ugly beige crocs all girly with pinks and white and metallic gold...And I have two huge bison skulls that I want to do... just haven't decided yet.. though, I'm leaning towards metallic gold and then doing a black leather fringed and sewn to go over it....maybe some beads and feathers and a dream catcher in the third eye (just above and centered between the eyes) ...( I just realized that the third eye forms a triangle and got a whole spiritual teaching the message that I got is that to fully see ,..you need to look with all three.) (Wow! Neither of us would have ever guessed that I would get a spiritual lesson from you. Lol I love it!!!) . I have one last comment on your skull dip... since that one is your throw away expirement, I think it would be funny as hell to do a camouflage dip and hang a sign on it and say something like " ha! You can't see me" LMAO Last but not least, if you ever read this, you have to hit me up and tell me all about your artwork hanging in the background. Thanks Blue Dog! Erin
Hey Erin, send me your address and I'll send you that panel.... Best way is to email BlueDogGarage@aol.com and put something in the subject so I know it isn't junk mail... As for the "artwork" in the background. They are just some practice panels i did when I first started learning to pinstripe.
BlueDogGarage , good attempt. On the skull you failed to mix paint , different kind of paint , just cut a stir stick in half long ways, 3x then you will have 3 to mix with also try slowing down and use more paint and have someone help with the paint dip slowww, then clear the water and pull out set on cardboard let dry .
remember that what you see on top of the water is actually the underside. you would have to have a camera inside the water to see what the project is going to look like. have to think backwards like oil painting you start from the back and work forward
+A rtie Thanks! I have a video up of just skulls....and yea if i'm outside working on anything she thinks she needs to be out there with me "supervising" lol Thanks for watching!
Use just 3 colors! It works the best with just 3 colors. Spray one after the other for just 3 seconds. After that waste no time if possible and use your screw driver to spread. Then dip at a 45 degree angle with a constant left to right or front to back dip. If you want camo use brown, green, and tan. For some reason yellow paint sucks for dipping. Unless your doing all yellow.
try putting a cap or two of rubbing alcohol in the water and mixing it before the paint process starts. If that doesn't work it might be the quality of your cities water. When the water is rich with lime or calcium it makes the process kinda hard.
you will be happier with an oil based paint it won't dry as fast in the water it will however take quite a bit longer to dry once you pull it out of the water.
use warm water paint will take longer to dry giving you longer working time also always clean paint residue from previous dipping off water surface before starting new dip that paint will be partially dry and will mess up your new design
I use oil-based Testors Enamel. 1 tablespoon of Borax per gal of water at room temp. Usually turns out OK. If your going to use rattle cans use Rust-Oleum - it's oil based.
try using the enamel in the pint size cans with medicine droppers Paint won't clump as fast as spray can hope this helps did my whole dash board in. my truck looks awesome
im thinking if the water was cold the paint wouldnt dry as fast, and if you hav a 2x4 on edge of bucket and set cans on board, then rather than spraying into center spray the paint left to right to get lines, and try the deer head again, im just speaking outloud here i havent done it yet either, but cool that you tried it just the same cool video
I'm no professional but, my first thought when you started to get the globs was that you might be using too much paint... Those signs turned out pretty cool though! Thanks for the vid
I pinstripe as well. Cool lookin panels hung up. Does this make the paint have a texture or does it lay down pretty flat? I might try this on a panel and wet sand it then clear. It would be pretty cool for a Rat Fink or Flying Eyeball panel background.
It gives them some texture, I've considered striping one but was worried your eye would lose the striping in the swirls. If you try it let me know how it goes!
I see you had a grid on one of the panels. If your panel consists of darker colors just grid it out with a white stabilo. Or just make a center line and work off of that. I usually just make a center line and work from there. I find myself trying to be to careful or perfect if I lay out a grid.
Your deer skull was such a bad A idea especially with the camo-esque color scheme im totally gonna have to try that!! (Dont worry ill credit you for sure hah but really great idea!!)
maybe you should try a different temperature water. I would like to think the paint would dry faster if water is cold that could be the reason it is getting stringy
I saw one saying 75 degrees, but not stating if it was Fahrenheit, I think it was Celsius. He had lots of time for dipping, and got a nice shiny surface.
One thing on your panels or anything else you are paint hydro-dipping spray a base coat on the object usually what ever color is mid (not the darkest, not lightest). You also need a bigger tub so you have more room to push paint to the side before taking it out.
Two problems I see. One is your water is too cold. Use water at about 90 degrees for better even results. The second thing I see is that you are using a regular enamel paint. The best results are with oil base paints because they float good and don't thicken and they mix very well. Also to help keep your bucket clean use packing tape on the sides that will go just below the water line and above the water line. Then you can peel the tape and the bucket will be ready to put tape on for the next dip.
One thousand apologies; however, I disagree. To achieve optimal colour dispersion and adhesion, your water ~must be~ 1.) heated to precisely 113.889°C (even a 1° degree [+/-] difference will certainly produce drastic and erratic failure), then with great haste, 2.) add one-and-a-half cubes of ice made from a 1:1 mixture of the purest municipal and deionized water you can obtain legally in your area. The cubed ice must measure 1" x 1-16/32" and half of such, retrospectively. Once the proper ice melt threshold temperature is reached, 3.) remove .075 ml of the solution and responsibly dispose of it in accordance with EPA and your local governments standards. You do not want it to leech into the ground water system or have it evaporate into the environment. It is a highly toxic solution and will wreak havoc on native ecosystems. Once properly disposed of 4.) GFY.
my dad an I are wanting to dip his rims we are going to use something other then the rim to practice on first. is there a certain type of paint you use. an the temp of the water?
+KellyKinx1996 I'd suggest having the water at room temp ~70ish.....other than that make sure you use an enamel paint....send me a picture when you get done. I'd love to see them!!
Can you do both sides of a pannel at once and still get the same efect i make vinyl roof signs for derby cars and i have had a few request to do this before adding the vinyl lettering figure id rather ask before trying it
Shawn Deweese I've done both sides of of thicker material but never tried a thin panel. I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as you had a large enough water tank (at least 2.5x the size of one side of panel)
If the pain is drying on you before you can get the part in the water that is because your water is to warm. I suggest putting ice in the water and let it set until it melts. Then put your paint in and it will not dry so fast. But a very helpful video. Thank You
Hi I am from Iraq and I am not allowed to enter the stimulant material which is added to the films of Hydrographic printing. Is there an alternative installation for this article? What is the answer?
I just started looking into Hydro dipping, and from the research I have done, I think the paint may be drying in the water to fast because the water is not warm enough. I read the water needs to be around 75-90 degrees. Try setting the bucket of water out in the sun and add boiling water to it right before spraying the paint. Also, you should look into the hydro dip films instead of just spray paint. The films have crazy cool patterns, you can even buy ones with Real Tree paintjobs that look extremely professional, almost looks like you put a decal on the product but it is actually paint. with the films you have to buy activator spray though so it gets a bit more cost effective.

room temp water and when you pul color u dont want to pull from the very edge start like 2nd or 3rd ring in the main thing ive noticed is letting your water reach room temp
suggestions maybe try silicone to keep it from sticking / dw40 with silicone example .. also maybe liquid enamel paints instead of spray so you can pour or use a pipet to put paint on water would be easier to get patterns you desire .. good luck
hehehe if he used that much paint dipping the dog it would set like concrete eventually but that was a funny comment you made the moment I read it I was drinking a coffee and I ended up with the legs of my jeans looking like they'd been dipped cause it was so well timed when I read your comment the coffee was just spat out. Well done funny comment 😂😂😂
Hey, man. Firstly, cool video--i get lost in painting and finishing youtube holes. Secondly, what breed of dog is that? I have a mutt that has very similar coloring, and I'm, curious. Thanks!
try using a blow dryer to push the paint the direction you want then it cant stick to your tool and make glops. And keep cardboard boxes and cut them into 4x4 pieces to move the paint out of the way to take out,and the heat from the blow dryer will help with the drying too fast.

Why would you want to slow it down

did you use borax in it? if so, how much?
maybe set a small table next to bucket or a board across the top of bucket on edge and line up the cans so as to grab them faster pretty cool,
Water resistan collor?
May I know what kind of materials you use for swirl painting?
All I used was rustoleum spray paint and water.... Several folks have mentioned adding borax to the water will help...
did you use warm water and did you mix with anything?
no and no
Dumb & Dumber
try mixing it by blowing through a drinking straw or with forced water.Let me know if it works.
is it just straight water
Yes sir!
It's bent water haha see what I did there ;)
giggerRider yes
try using a blow dryer to push the paint the direction you want then it cant stick to your tool and make glops. And keep cardboard boxes and cut them into 4x4 pieces to move the paint out of the way to take out,and the heat from the blow dryer will help with the drying too fast.
Tool...lol
The water needs to be warm and also works good with oil based paint like nail polishes.
what temp is the water?
