I got my broken Emerson vcr/ DVD recorder combo in the mail yesterday, and the vcr part was messing up, and eating my tapes, then I got one of my tapes stuck in the vcr, so I replaced the belt with a new one, and now the vcr works! The DVD recorder side does not work at all, even though I cleaned the lens, and other components on that side!
That was quite a challenge! At the 19:50 mark you can definitely see something on the end of the q-tip, possibly a tiny little piece of a bad cassette that shed into the mechanism. Enough to block the optics, perhaps? I've also seen similar issues when a strong light source is falling onto the deck. It upsets the optics and the deck goes into shut down. With some machines you had to pretty much put the top cover back on to get them to behave! It can lead to much head-scratching for the uninitiated!
Any idea why the eject mechanism seems to be getting stuck? I followed your directions on another of your videos for cleaning the prism and the IR LEDs, and that solved the playback issues (thank you!), but now I'm finding that the left rail gets stuck ejecting a tape and it needs a bit of help to lift all the way. Did I mess something up on reassembly, or is something amiss? Regular Play/FF/RW/Stop functions all seem to be good, and I figured out how to re-insert the mechanism arm into the door for proper insertion. (Funai ZV427FX4)
Great video. Im working on one at the moment which has no power. Cant figure what it is but its dead. I will figure it out. :). Hopefully. Love the videos.
Suscon even sounds suspect...lol. That position switch on this Funai looks great, probably their name brand is built better than the rebadged others they make...lol.
nice job, i have one of these, thanks for the insight, my only gripe on these is the clock display. i wish there was a way i could disable or turn off the timer record function to disable the clock display.
I have watched a few of your videos on these models i have the magnavox version and my cylinder spins super slow and it shuts off after a few seconds of it trying to read the tape any idea what could cause this
Man what I wouldn't give for some help on this TV I'm working on, main board powering up but no display, inverter/backlights working, previous main showed image when I put pressure on the main ic, 12v to tcon is present, no scope to check ldvs lines but there's voltages on them, baffled
Nolen Sansom Watch my latest video, It shows another fault of the mode select switch being bad. It will load the tape normally but the head drum wont start. th-cam.com/video/SJybP9-eTDI/w-d-xo.html at 3:35
I find it funny and sad when you comment that viewers lose interest if a repair video is too long. Those without the interest to learn these technics just don't care to learn them at all.
so was 2015 the last year for DVD recorders ?... according to every retailer I have been to , they are outlawed by the courts due to copyright laws and new ones are not available...I guess my question would be why DVD recorders banned but not VHS recorders?
Have the same exact unit that is having issues playing tapes without distortion and it just started recently after a loud clicking noise when hitting the dubbing button. Would love to send it to you.
I thought to myself, okay he has it dissembled and the drive belt is right in his face. Will he clean it with the magic joy juice? And you didn't touch any of the belts as a normal preventative cleaning procedure, but you changed the cap out which tested fine. That threw me. Why not, it was right there? Good catch on the bent frame. I was looking at the wear lane and noticed that as well.
I did clean both belts (capstan, and loading) just did not include it in the mix. The video was getting fairly long and some people lose interest easily.
Absolutely surreal that these things were being made as recently as 2015 and 2016.
Props to you for having the patience to work on these hunks of junk. They are not designed with reparability in mind, thats for sure.
so helpful. I'm going to take astab at trying to fix my Funai combo

Not that I know of, sorry. Cover it with black tape.

Hi, I have been having a similar problem with my Funai model where it can't take a tape. Is there anyway I can send my model out for you to look at?
Nice, I have a magnavox zv427mg9 that the head drum doesn’t attempt to spin, It is not the mode switch because it loads the tape properly!
The head drum may be seized up. He did a repair video on a Toshiba DVR620 which had that problem.
@@TheVCRKing Thanks for the tip, but I don’t have the right size allen wrench to take apart the vcr head
It is a 1.5mm allen

@@norcal715 Thanks! I've also wanted to know that so I can lubricate head drum motors myself.

The only thing I can think of is the video quality of the DVD vs. the VHS
2016 Funai made the last one.

I think you already emailed me about it, but if not email me NorCal715videos@gmail.com

@@norcal715 Gotcha. I just didn't see or hear anything mentioned about any of it. Usually you let us know what you did when you don't show it.
Why need a fan in 2015? hehe!
I'm not sure why you call this brush a "tooth brush"? I certainly don't brush my teeth with a stainless steel brush... 😅
Unless you are Jaws from James Bond Movies lol
