  • Here is (yet another & another & another) Magnavox ZV427MG9-A DVD VCR (from the San Francisco Bay area) this time to be repaired. This one spills the tape and will not play. Also the DVD has several bad capacitors that will be replaced in part 2

    The VCR needed just a simple cleanup of the tape path, sensors and mode switch (heads appear to be OK) - no parts replaced yet. Easy enough fix. Looking forward to part 2 with the DVD section and cap changing. That should be fun. Cool vid by the way. Cheers. :)

    You may wanna mention that when reassembling the unit, you'll probably end up with 8 or 9 different kinds of screws and more than likely you'll forget where they came from. That said, this video gave me the basic knowledge to get it done. So thank you. Shockingly enough, it was that lens with the plastic wheel underneath the VCR unit. Oh, I have an ONN universal remote without the VCR option. Do you know how to switch from DVD to VCR on the remote without having to do it manually on the unit? God forbid I should get up off my ass.

      i bet you could ask your fans/subscribers to help having them all backed up, so you wouldn't have to do anything, but ask them to do it.
      if a video has already been saved it will indicate that on the wayback machine website.

    I'm having the same problem with my own Magnavox combo! I've taken it partially apart, but you didn't show how to access the mode switch. I'm wondering if you had to remove the bottom, (taking out base screws) in order to loosen the chassis? I removed the basic chassis screws, but it was still securely in place. I'm only willing to go so far.

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do have to remove the complete circuit board / mechanism unit, then there are 2 screws that hold the mechanism to the circuit board. One is hidden under the capstan/cylinder motor ribbon cable. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE RIBBON CABLE!

    • @Lightsngear
      @Lightsngear 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@norcal715 Okay. I'd have to open it up and take another look. I'm still assuming that the loading/playing unit (as a whole) needs to be loosened and/or removed, since that piece is not visible with everything in place.

    I have that same make and model. Yesterday, the Hi-Fi Stereo sound on the unit stopped working after I played back a tape that turned out to be in rougher shape than I thought. Even after using the head cleaner tape multiple times, the Hi-Fi still wouldn't work. Any idea what the problem could be? Do you think something like that is repairable?

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tape may have damaged the HI-FI head(s) on the rotating cylinder. You need a microscope to actually view the heads. You can do a visual inspection and usually see if a video/hi-fi head is damaged without a microscope.

      @@norcal715 I sent mine in to a local repair shop a few days ago. According to the employee I talked to on the phone yesterday while obtaining an estimate, it sounds like the unit just needs a good internal cleaning. Would a cleaning similar to the ones seen on some of your videos fix something like that?

    You seem like you know what you’re doing. I have a system just like this and all lights are on. The vcr and dvd lights are on. The power light just flashes all the time. I can’t turn it off or choose vcr or dvd. It won’t even eject or open and I know there so no VHS tape in. I don’t think there is a dvd in either. It won’t do anything but light up. I have to unplug it to get it to go off. It just started doing this a couple weeks ago. Any suggestions? I have lots of old VHS tapes from long ago of family recordings that I’d love to watch.
