The hilarious/sad thing, is that the people who look up to Jordan Belfort for advice and inspiration are the same exact people who Belfort would happily take advantage of.

Ending of this movie is seriously underrated. We saw all of Jordan's excesses, a life full of greed, sex, debauchery, fraud and embezzlement. Getting caught finally in the end, but just serving 3 years in a 'prison' playing tennis and then coming back as a celebrity guest delivering lectures around the world to an audience listening to his words with immense respect and devotion.
On the other hand we had the real hero of the movie, the incorruptible FBI guy going back home in the same subway just like what Jordan told him earlier in the moving. In that subway scene he is seeing his miserable future right in front of him in the form of an old couple near death.
The ending scene depicted the reality of the phony world we live in. We all are gullible and adore the very people who screw us. The laws are also there to support the rich and powerful. Whereas the honest ones doing their jobs are unrecognizable and will go unnoticed. I didn't expect the movie to give such a strong message in the end.
Jordan's cell mate was literally Tommy Chong, who was the one who convinced him to turn his life's story into a book. The kicker is, WE all know Jordan is rich, but his net-worth is technically -$100 million because he still has to pay back his investors, which we know will never be paid off.

Meanwhile Jordan who did all these horrible things is still admired for what he accomplished.

The way the cop reads the paper and realizes nobody cares is a seriously under rated scene that explains the masses in a split second.

@@erickomar3152the point is, a man who ruined so many lives faced justice and no one batted an eye, but for years people fawned over Jordan’s success via fraudulence and aspired to be like him. People are more concerned with getting rich quick than doing the right thing. Because of that, no one cared when “the wolf” got caught, and the world barely changed, if at all, because of it. That’s why the FBI agent looks so dejected looking at the newspaper on his shitty subway ride home, because despite choosing his morals over Jordan’s bribe, nothing changed for him, or the world. As the old saying goes, “if a tree falls in the forest and no one’s around to hear it, does it make a sound?”

The shot at 0:29 is the most underrated part of this ending sequence. Here we see the FBI agent serving the arrest warrant for Jordan. Yet, even in this moment where the FBI is most powerful and Jordan is most vulnerable, Scorsese depicts the FBI agents craning their necks to look up at Jordan as he looks down upon them. Jordan is quite literally above the law.
And, even despite finally catching him. He gets just 36 months (of which he only served 22 months in real life). They spent more time chasing him then he did in jail. And now gets to be as successful as he was before, even having a podcast. He actually was the guy introducing HIMSELF at the end of the film.

I love how this movie doesn't give a crap about morality. It portrays the world as it really is-corrupted.
That's the thing with Scorsese's movies. Portraying the subject at hand at hand as it really is, warts and all. He despises movies that force the audience to root for someone and would rather much let the viewer decide on his/her own account. It's genius.

All of Scorcece's movie have moral value.. it's just like in real life, you just don't point out every moral value that we do. This is one of the saddest endings I've ever seen.
Jordan Belfort spent his life robbing people of their livelihoods, and he devoted a lot of those years training others to do the same. When the time came to pay the piper, he opted to sell all of those who trusted him down the river in exchange for a couple of years at what amounts to a summer resort. He got out of prison only to find himself a celebrity admired by countless people who wanted to do the exact same thing that he did.
The con man will always be America's unofficial hero. The reason that real-world villains like Jordan Belfort get off with little more than a slap on the wrist is because the rest of us let him. Because deep down, we're willing to delude ourselves into thinking that we have more in common with predators like Jordan rather than the multitude of victims who lost everything to him.
It's enough to make anyone want to cry.
Wow, the only person in this entire comment section to get the point of this movie. Everyone is just laughing about the scene with the Fed on the bus looking at his surroundings, saying he's rethinking the bribe, and how lavish Jordan's life was, but it's all bullshit. He doesn't own any of it, it's not his. It was all reposessed by the Feds, and Jordan got off on a light sentence only for people to glamourize him like you said, but a lot of people miss the point that this movie is illustrating just how stupid and pointless all the excess and debauchery is.

What I like most about the end of this movie is that it has a happy and pessimistic ending at the same time. The FBI agent, an honest man, goes home by subway and Jordan Belfort, a thief who destroyed many families, went to prison, served his sentence and still remains rich. And he's still rich telling people the story of his life of crime. It is a pessimistic ending. An ending that makes one think it's not worth being an honest person in this world. But then, remember the FBI agent who goes home on the subway, we remember that he has his morals intact and his duty accomplishment. It may sound silly but for some people this is worth more than any money in the world. The FBI agent had a happy ending.
It's those same thieves like Jordan that steal from people from the same subways. Jordan could've played it honorable instead his money came from the sweat of the people who don't have it easy in this life.
That’s a nice way of interrupting the ending, honestly. Refreshing.
And what's that across from him, to his right? An Elderly couple, who I'd imagine are happier in their lives than maybe even Jordan Belfort will be.

3:03 is the best part of this scene. Agent Denham is sitting in his cheap suit with sweat dripping off on the subway exactly as discussed on Jordan's boat earlier in the film. Nobody knows who he is or that he's the one that made the headline about Stratton in the paper happen.
Love how he casually looks around and is satisfied that he did the right thing and looking at the subway-goers knows he could've saved any of them from becoming Stratton's next victim.
Yeah Agent Denham did not lose at all. FBI agents earn really good salaries despite what these commenters say. Plus he finally completed his long-awaited goal.

Thats not how he looks. He probably has mixed feeling, maybe regrets, cause Jordan is a rich star, and he is a nobody, with very little money.
This is my favorite movie, mainly because of how fearless it is. It just shows a man's rise and fall and doesn't even care to have a message of morality, which is cemented when Agent Denham is shown on the subway ride home looking completely defeated as if he finally realized that Belfort got off easy. His integrity doesn't outweigh the fact that his situation would remain average and Jordan in a sense beat him in the end. Outstanding movie, hilarious, amazing acting and production, masterful directing, great characters, and no filter whatsoever in the narrative and storytelling. I don't think I'll ever find a movie that I love as much as this one.

@@dxncerr1233 The man reading newspaper is FBI agent who refused to take Jordan's bribe and instead kept honor and arrested him, he is taking subway to home and is not that rich probably, but he could had been rich if he took the bribe, at the end they also show scene of public wanting to hear from Jordan Belfront instead of wanting to hear from FBI agent, because most people want to earn money and lie to public than be noble.

The scene with Denham going home with the subway was my favorite in the film. He looks around wondering if his life could be different, but still in the end of the day, he can sleep well at nights knowing he did the right thing. My favorite character in the movie.

Gotta love the scene at 3:01. The FBI agent, even after finally locking up Jordan, still finds himself going home on the subway, just like Jordan said he would in their talk on his yacht. Even after winning, the FBI agent is still trapped in his "miserable life", so he doesn't derive any lasting happiness from putting Jordan away.
Fortunately there are no such people in the real world. Everyone can be bought. That agent was just stupid.

I think you're interpreting it wrong. The FBI agent doesn't want money, he doesn't want to be rich or powerful. In the end, no, he doesn't get the fame he deserves, but in a way he is like a superhero in disguise, who just put away one of the most powerful men in America, and yet sits there humbly with all the other lower-class people. So I think the FBI agent is happy living his modest and yet meaningful lifestyle.

I think the subway scene isn't just about the officer thinking what his life could be if he had accepted the bribery. The way it is shot indicates to me that even though he is in the same financial situation, it is still worth it to do the right thing for all the people inside the subway he is looking at.

Notice the last 10 seconds of the movie (and this clip), is a steady shot that lingers on the ordinary peoples faces. I hold the sentiment that this was Scorsese's way of calling us out. The average every day people. We are what enabled Belfort to lead the lifestyle he did. It wasn't only his greed, it was ours too. And here we are, at the end of the show, still being sucked into what Belfort has to say, despite knowing what he did.

3:02 ~3:25 is the true message of this movie. The agent is not affluent but absolutely living a meaningful life protecting people like those on the subway.
I don't think that's what it's about, I think it's about the fact that Jordan Belfort spent 3 years in a luxury prison and came out a rich celebrity, but the FBI agent is still wearing the same suit and taking the subway, all because he did the right thing and didn't take the bribe.

"I did the right thing" vs. "What if I became a stockbroker, and followed my own dreams? I wouldn't have to take this subway and wear the same suit every day. I could be living the life". Ultimately, he chose the path of nobility, but as Jordan said, "There is no nobility in poverty." Is where he is better than the prison bus? I don't think so, Jordan goes to a cushy prison with a library and where he can play tennis and write his book, and the FBI agent stays with his poverty forever. Jordan goes to a vacation home for about 2 years and goes back to being rich. The FBI agent gets a life sentence of being imprisoned in poverty,

@@justchilling177 I think the point of the movie is to point out how people like the agent exist and do good things, yet they aren't nearly as rewarded as people like Belfort who lie cheat and steal. Although he did something good, he knows Belfort still is getting the better hand of cards, it's supposed to show how modern society doesn't promote good people like the agent and he looks around wondering if it is all worth it.

The symbolism in this movie is so underrated. Love this ending so much. Denham’s look on the subway ride home to me is him questioning if he’s made the right decision in life to play it straight, and know that he’ll never ‘take his shot’ to get rich and have all the lavish material possessions that we all wish for..the very end where Scorsese essentially takes the camera and flips it on us for that mirror image final shot. We all judge Jordan’s life and decisions, meanwhile we’re all sitting in the theater like sheep captivated by it, and paying money to watch it, and in turn, helping Jordan get rich again..You can interpret those scenes 5 different ways, but that was how I interpreted the end.

What I love about this ending is its not a contrived dumb ending with cheesy morals. It shows the world how it is, and it asks what you're going to do about it.

He's never going to pay it all back unless if he wins the lottery or something like that but he's not as rich as you think from his "royalties" and his book. He overall has a solid middle class life who he has to pay back his dues for the rest of his life but it's overall comfortable life to live in which is kind of twisted seeing as he's ultimately the villain in all of his this as he screwed over thousands to millions of people but still has an overall good, comfortable life.

Sad state of things. The FBI agents like Gregory Coleman who refused Belfort's bribes deserve to be lauded as heroes and fondly remembered as such well after they're gone. Sure Agent Coleman has to ride the subway home, but its worth a good and peaceful night's sleep. I'll take riding a subway home and a loving family instead of sleeping alone in a cold mansion and popping fistfuls of pills to temporarily numb the pain of the miserable void in my soul.

The part with him on the bus is showing that he's content with his decision to be a good person without massive riches, in contrast with Jordan who was the opposite. You know this because in every other way, they're the same. The FBI agent brags about his busts while Jordan brags about his success in stealing. He fought against Jordan, who was a dime a dozen in his profession, and looked at a newspaper glorifying the big bust. But, rather than flaunting his win around for the sake of personal vanity, he sits on a bus humbly looking around at the people he views as equals, rather than what Jordan would have done, which is the opposite.

Drug problems and alcoholism as well.

Love this movie. It doesn't spoon feed you a simple tale of morality, but instead tells a morally-complex story and expects you to form the right moral conclusion. Only a fool would look at this movie and see it as advocating Belfort's lifestyle or decisions. The movie points out that, yes, sometimes "the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding". Does the film then endorse living such a destructive and hedonistic life? No. The moral is this: life is unfair, but its unfairness shouldn't make you desire to become Belfort. The final scene of the film isn't a stinging rebuke of living the good life, but rather a reminder that sometimes living the good life leads to less success. Also, I saw a comment where someone said the FBI agent was condemned to a life of poverty. How anyone could think a seasoned FBI agents lives in poverty is beyond me and shows the amount of world knowledge in these comments.

That moment of the FBI agent on the tube is honestly my favourite scene in the whole film. You can't tell if he's wondering what his life would've been like if he'd taken Jordan's bribes or if he's satisfied with the fact he'll go down in history as another unsung hero and he ought to be proud - or at least he's trying to convince himself that he is.

This film is almost ten years old (time flies) and I can now say that this is one of Martin Scorsese’s best films IMO. Top 5, for sure, and it might even be in the Top 3.
That ending shot is kind of depressing. A room full of hopfuls desperate for easy money who are paying a con-man to advise them. A great end to a great film. Belfort in the end used his infamous status to make money.

That final shot is so brilliant and one of my favorite in film history. You just spent the whole last hour watching what this life had gotten Jordan - severed relationships, convictions, had hurt thousands of people, and a shell of his former state - and yet here are hundreds of people waiting with bated breath to learn how to be exactly like him. Hits even harder when you realize Scorsese is holding up a mirror to the theater audiences, since so many people saw this movie and left with the thought that Jordan is the protagonist and wanting to be as cool and rich as him. Gatsby syndrome. Says all that in 1 shot with no movement or dialogue. Genius.

The FBI just gallivanting into Stratton Oakmont was so satisfying to watch
one of the best directed scenes of all time, and criminally underrated especially compared to the back door restaurant scene in goodfellas. Obviously that was one huge take but i think this scene, as far as direction, was superior. the faces and emotions and you can tell exactly what the FBI agent is thinking when on the train, with no dialogue. the FBI raid panning across, everyone in commotion eventually settling on a panicking Donnie. Mind blowing direction.
For some reason, the music and lyrics go so perfectly with the scene, yet neither are obvious. just superb film making all round.

And the ending song is Vince Guaraldi's classic, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind." A double-sided meaning supporting the ideology of both the man of integrity and the man of indulgence.
The ending scene on the subway really sums up the whole movie to me. In many cases, even when the bad guys go down, it won’t make your life any better. To add insult to injury, many times the bad guy will still go on to live a more comfortable and luxurious life then you ever will.
I’ve grown up around a lot of kids who aspired and probably still aspire to be rich, especially through finance (more fintech nowadays). Yet, a part of me could never stomach working on Wall Street. I always root for the nameless silent workhorses like Agent Denham who devote their immense talents to the ascetic life of public service.
When you meet Denham, he is almost robotic. A quiet, simple man building a complex yet completely airtight case against Belfort. He is an endurance hunter, stalking his prey until it finally cannot go one step further. But after the boat scene, I think Denham was touched by the magic dust of Belfort. Denham maintained his integrity, but just like a soon-to-be-swindled Stratton Oakmont client, he felt like he was special. For a brief few years, he had a case on his hands unlike any of his coworkers. He knew he was sure to win and in a matter of months or years he would be a giant slayer. In a sense, he was emotionally scammed by Belfort.
What I saw on the subway was not defeat or indifference. I saw inner conflict. His years of austerity reasserting their dominance over the boyish ambitions that once led him to apply to be a broker all those years ago and just led him to think for a brief moment that he could be special again. When he squints and raises his chin, I see him engaging in a personal factory reset, trying hard to return to his drone like state.
However it seems the tale in real life isn’t so bleak. The real Agent Coleman seems to have been pleased with the media exposure, and in the fashion of the entrepreneurial Belfort eventually founded his own private consulting firm focusing on preventing money laundering and suspicious financial activity. He probably makes millions from government checks while training future Federal agents and regulators. Nowadays, he and Belfort both essentially are paid to speak and I would guess have similarly sized “consulting” firms. You could argue this equivalency between an honest man and a criminal is amoral, but I would be happy to see that honest work does have some benefit. While they may be at the same place now, I would guess that Coleman probably sleeps easier at night.
The last scene to me has always been angry and heart breaking looking at the lives of ordinary people who were Jordan's victims. These are the people that were ripped off to pay for this guys debauchery. These are the people that used to be America's middle class.

A criminal enterprise isn't "something great". The FBI agent, who seems to be the lead FBI agent conducting the investigation into a firm knocking on Wall St.'s door, gets renumerated properly, I can tell you that much. He isn't living off of food stamps. What's wrong with not scamming people for a living and selling your soul for some pieces of silver?
