This channel is outstanding. Wow. So grateful I found you. What albert said about drinking coffee in the morning on the deck and watching the sunrise feels so spiritual really hit home for me. My great great grandfather migrated from Licata to NYC after his father died of the influenza epidemic. He was 15. That's why I'm here in the states and I'm getting back to my roots. Been learning italian on duolingo for about a year. Plan to WWOOF in Sicily this next summer! Could you do more videos on sicilian culture? Even though I now live in Lucca, not Sicily, I am still “connected” to Sicily through friends and some of the wonderful places I visited while living there. Also we still keep our sailboat in Marzamemi. So I really enjoy these videos. Always entertaining, informative and fun. Love your energy Eszter. Keep up the good work. Also I recommend to friends both here in Lucca who have not been to Sicily, as well as friends in US and UK.

I'm a Physician in the USA got 4 more yrs and I retire. sadly divorced after 20 yrs so I'm flying solo Have been looking at Sicily to retire and other places My mother immigrated to the US inside my grandmother in 1921 from Florence Italy...lol. The only Italian I know is bad words my mom used to say about the low class Italians in the area she was raised in ...lol Love your channel.

I spent two years in Vicenza in the 70's then studied Italian for 5 years at university in the US. I don't (yet) speak Sicilian but I don't think it will take long. I'm retired in California and am sincerely considering relocating to Italy, quite possibly Sicily. I thank you for the information.

I so enjoy watching you two! Perhaps you are familiar with the store in Catania called Cristaldi. They have a variety of international food items. Not a huge selection and not cheap, but when you have a craving, it certainly comes in handy! Thanks for what you do!!

The reason why there is trash everywhere along the roads in Sicily is that they never paid for trash removal before. The communes introduced trash removal fees a decade ago or so. On top of the fees, they also request the citizen to separate the trash into up to 4 types of trash (plastic, glass, paper, organic).
Correct ! But even now with recycle there is trash problem!

In Taormina about 3 Euro for coffee and about 4 euro for granita !
Hello Ester and Alfred! I stumbled on your channel by mistake! It is nice to discover you. I am Italian American Sicilian from Lentini and I had to reformat my brain to live here when I came back here from San Francisco. I have raised my children as bilingual. The hardest challenges here are the driving, the trash problem getting worse, and the mentality that changes too slowly! I teach both English and Italian as a second language, but my two beautiful children with autism have reduced my availability to work like before. The hardest challenges I face are the battles with the system to obtain their rights and the services they are entitled too. I enjoy listening to you both, because I can totally relate to you both. Nice channel.

I wouldn’t change my decision to live here though. My family is in the US, but I enjoy life much more than when I was in the States. I agree with the spiritual aspect of living here.

@@tobirates916 hello there, my children are dual citizens. Here the culture in general is more tollerant and the school system is more inclusive, but there is still a lot of work to do. I have to fight for everything that they are entitled to.

We can relate to the driving stories we got stuck in the very narrow streets in Erice the map told us to turn but it was a set of stairs !! Everyone in the houses came out but no one offered to help us lol The worst traffic circle was in Bagheria by the Diva cafe !! We can laugh about it now priceless experiences !!

YES for us too!
Lol, driving is not for the faint at heart. I drive everywhere and it is an advanture. The stray animals are a big problem and there are some places with kennels now. Sadly they are over full and many stay in them for years. The biggest problem is not many will spay/nueter their pets and just let them run free.
Two of our friends, one in Canicatti and another Naxos are working on rescuing these dogs but there is not much support !
Do you take advantage of super cheap flights to Greece, Croatia, etc on Volotea, Ryanair, etc.

Two years ago my kids did Palermo to Santorini for a week in October for 30 Euro each way. They used the hydrofoils once they got there to visit crete. Last year friends did the same to Dubrovnik in September, 40 Euro each way.
It’s good that they treat foreigners differently - that’s why Sicily has its own culture - you have to earn your way into the culture.

If on Social Security and retired, no. If you,however you earn wages in Italy yes. You would need to seek advice from an accountant, however, for your specific situation

YES there is public transportation .
My first year I walked everywhere no problem. It is totally doable but different story if you want to travel around the island. PLUS there are many hilly areas so take that into consideration if you have knee or other physical issues. I will for sure address this and have more thoughts on our next chat !!! Grazie mille !

Oh my goodness I really need to find out certain things. I'm dealing with someone who doesn't read my emails in full. It is just back and forth and I am doing my head in. There is no way I will learn Italian. I am European. English is widely spoken.
English is not that widely spoken in many places in Sicily. What do you need help with ? Alfred is an attorney and deals with lots of Sicilian and Italian issues.
English is not widely spoken, neither is it in many countries in Europe, especially outside of major cities. Trying to move to Sicily without learning even basic Italian would be very difficult indeed!
i lived in italy for yrs. i would strongly encourage people thinking moving there to go spend a long vacation there first. it can very quickly turn into a nightmare .

YES of course !! Catholic churches are everywhere. From our home there are 3 churches in 2 mile radius !

io attualmento abito in Florida Usa ....posso dirvi che qui il costo della vita e' quasi il doppio che in Sicilia ....un carciofo costa 2.99 la frutta non ha sapore e noi italiani desideriamo il buon cibo i dolci sono pessimi.... le tasse sulle case altissime per la sanita' se non hai un assicurazione sei fregato anche qui se non stai attento ti fregano sul prezzo ....paghiamo 225 dollari al mese per internet telefono e pogrammi televisivi solo per la tv 122 dollari al mese un pacco di pasta barilla di 454 gr costa 1.91 dollari e viene fatta in America si trova la nutella fatta in Canada i panettoni in Brasile e il parmesan che di parmiggiano non ha nulla .....in banca se vai sotto i 1500 dollari al mese ti costa 12 dollari ...il vino costa tre volte piu' che in Sicilia al ristorante un calice costa in media 9,95 ...paghiamo piu[' di 100 dollari di acqua e in media 150 di luce mei mesi piu' freddini in estate saliamo a 250 al mese l'affitti di un appartamento con una camera da letto non meno di 1.200 ...per quanto riguarda il cibo con tutto il buon mangiare che abbiamo questi signori desiderano il cinese indiano che comunque a Palermo trovi tutto ......quindi cari americani in Sicilia prima di parlare informatevi meglio..

How can you miss donuts in Italy??? Italy has such luscious cornetti and pastries and we did find muffins in Italy....Bomboloni are Italian donuts and they are delicious!!!
Ha. First of all I eat little sweets in general. That said,Italy has delicious sweets some of Europe's best. However, a good old American New England plain doughnut on a crisp fall day,along with hot apple cider,I certainly miss. :)

"There is no Indian restaurant" or "I wish there was more foreign food options" - let me stop you right there. This is a very American way of thinking that people need to unlearn when they travel to Europe. Italy is not America or Canada that don't have a culinary of their own and need to bring everything from outside. Italians have a very good and famous cuisine, and people shoudn't expect to find foreign food restaurants without *at least* a local taste added to it, specially outside of big centres like Rome and Milan. If you wanna taste TRUE Japanese food, it goes without saying that you should go to Japan. When I go to Italy I wanna flood my senses with Italian flavors, and not having to choose between foreign food knockouts. Leave Europe with its own cuisine.
@erikaweber_ We LOVE Sicilian foods! However we live here and are not visiting, so sometimes we miss some diverse international foods. Not a complain! Trust me!
