When Holden says _"She's gone"_ , He's actually talking about the big ship, The Canterbury. It is naval tradition to refer to ships as female. 'She was a fine ship!'
But it is a natural thing, and probably a planned moment of dramatic confusion that you would also think he is referring to his girlfriend since she was cut short as she was telling him something important.
You are starting something truly brilliant! You will very quickly become addicted to this show. If I could offer any advise, it would be to never ever take your eyes off the screen! You don't want to miss a single frame of this wonderfully produced drama.

  • @17thknight
    @17thknight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +57

There's a double meaning to "She's gone". It's very common for sailors in English to refer to ships as "She" even though we don't gender nouns in the language. So the viewer isn't supposed to know if Holden is referring to his girlfriend or the ship in that moment, and neither does the crew with him.

Wrong indeed… It is pretty good at fiction and at least puts some token effort into science, but a great deal of its basic technological exposition is just so damn clueless. Like the water shortage being a driving force of conflict when even our society today has technology to almost 100% recycle water, e.g. on cruise ships. Not to mention how the movement of ships defy the most basic of Newtonian physics…”flip and burn”… really?

"She" is a pronoun used for ships. When Holden said, "she's gone" and "they nuked her", he was talking about the Cantebury, not his girlfriend 🤣
If you're interested in Astronomy, you should also know that Ceres is a real planetoid in the solar system. Ceres, Eris and Sedna are part of the reason Pluto is no longer classified as a planet. Otherwise we'd be learning about the 15 planets of the solar system in primary school.

  • @danbadd

Holden is from Earth, as is Amos. Alex (with the drawl) is actually a Martian from Mariner Valley, and Naomi is a Belter as is Shed (the "sort-of" doctor). Josephus Miller is a burned-out detective working for the Star Helix security company in Ceres. And the woman that you meet on Eath is Chrisjen Avarsarela who is the Deputy Undersecretary for Defense with the United Nations. Part of the confusion is that in order to introduce all of the important characters from the books, the show-runners had to blend the first two novels into one stream from the beginning of the series.

@@ANDREV I haven't read the books yet, just seen the show. However the authors have stated to reference the show for learning the language and not the books. Anyway, Lang Belta is obviously most derivative of English, but it's also heavily derivative of Spanish, French, German, Russian, Hindi, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean and Arabic. There are also influences from dozens of other languages sprinkled in, but most of what makes up the language is in that list.

When Holden said, "She's gone," that was the reference to the Canterbury itself...ships are referred to as "she."
This is a very well-developed story. It began as a role-playing game, then became a popular novel series (the final book of the novels has just been published). The original creators of the game and novels are also producers and writers of the television series. This means that they know their story very well, and they have sprinkled foreshadowings and clues to future episodes throughout. You have already seen clues to future seasons.
The episodes are very information-dense. They don't hold your hand, they don't tell you things twice. They show you what you will need to know, but you have to pay attention. Even computer screens in the background contain clues to events of future episodes.

Welcome to The Expanse! I loved your reactions! One of you clearly stated part of the answer to this initial mystery of the show! The Canterbury was purposefully destroyed to spark the war. Well played, girl! Being an ice hauler, the ship was a vital part of the machinery of survival for Belters by supplying water to Ceres Station. Ceres is a dwarf planet and basically the Capitol of the Asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
Yes, the show is super information dense. Even to the point that every screen you see will have some sort of info to help understand the plot and the universe better. I've seen the series three times and still see things I've missed.
The Expanse...of space. Living in, surviving in, or dying in, the expanse of space.
I like to describe The Expanse as if Battlestar Galactica and Game of Thrones had a secret love child, it would be The Expanse.
    Sasa- Belter Creole, meaning "know"
Belter Creole, often referred to simply as "Belter," is the cultural language spoken by many Belters. The Belter name for the language itself is Lang Belta. During humanity's expansion into the solar system, people from many different parts of Earth or Mars often lived and worked together, and they developed a pidgin language to communicate with one another. Over time, this developed into a full-fledged creole language, lang Belta, which became the lingua franca, a common tongue of the Belt and the outer planets. As a creole language, Lang Belta is primarily derived from English, with influences and contributions from languages of many different families, such as Germanic, Chinese, Romance, Indic, Slavic, and Niger-Congo. Many of its words were derived from words or phrases in one or more of these languages.
There is a Belter Creole translator online. TH-cam hates links, or I'd post it for ya.
I think they used Jonathan Banks, Mike from Breaking Bad, almost like click bait. Have him in the first episode, but kill him off at the end of that episode.
When James said, "They nuked her." I think k he was talking about the Canterbury, but then he said, "She's gone." I feel like then he was speaking of Ade.

The Expanse is the best sci-fi series I've ever watched. It's been described as "Game of Thrones in space" (minus the terrible last season). I really love the human side of it, how it shows the best and worst of human behaviour, how humanity is its own worst enemy, and our efforts to overcome that when it's necessary to work together. Also, the show does diversity in casting _right,_ in a way that doesn't feel forced or preachy. It's also a show with excellent character development and its female characters are multidimensional badasses that rival (and I think they even outshine) its male characters. You are going to love it.

In ancient Roman religion, Ceres (/ˈsɪəriːz/ SEER-eez, was a goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships.[3] She was originally the central deity in Rome's so-called plebeian or Aventine Triad, then was paired with her daughter Proserpina in what Romans described as "the Greek rites of Ceres".
Ceres (/ˈsɪəriːz/;[17] minor-planet designation: 1 Ceres) is a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Ceres was the first asteroid discovered, on 1 January 1801

So, Season 1 isn't "worse," but this show has a lot of intricate stories and lots of characters, and the first season lays the foundation for all of it.
Once you see the entire series, go back and watch Season 1, again, and you realize the writing is absolutely brilliant. :)
It lays the groundwork for everything that happens, later, and delivers like a boss.
Okay, every location mentioned, so far, is a real place in the Solar System.
Ceres is the largest asteroid in the main Asteroid Belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter.
Ceres really is huge and it really is covered in ice, because it's out in the "Frost Belt," the region where the Sun's light and heat grows so dim that water freezes and doesn't evaporate into the vacuum of space.
In this setting, it has a huge station, inside it, with a large population.
Also, note that the Canterbury was mining for ice in the rings of Saturn, which is the next planet out, after Jupiter.

Awesome! you spotted lots and got a lot of things most first reactors miss
    - Identifying Julie Mao from the start
    - Debris incoming from the Canterbury being destroyed
    - Miller taking bribes for the air filters
    - Havelock being an earther
    Looking fwd to the rest

Welcome! To the fan base, and to the best sci-fi show this century. (And yes, I loved BSG!) All will become clear, so don't worry about being confused - you're supposed to be. Subbed for this. The girl was the daughter of the owner of a Luna-based Earth Corp. The detective is on Ceres, a dwarf planet and the largest body in the belt. A million people live there. All of the locations are real life solar system locations.

The Expanse is my favorite show, and its fan community is one of the best. And this is a great reaction. You are picking up on pretty much everything the show is showing you in terms of story, and this first season it is set up as a mystery. Don't worry about not getting everything immediately. There's a bunch of world building that needs to happen still, and they love to show you how stuff works, rather than tell you. If you feel you're confused, there is a good chance the writers want you to be, so just let it play out. Enjoy the ride!

I'm hyped to watch your reactions to it!

Read about "Ceres (dwarf planet)" on Wikipedia - that might help give you a sense of the setting.
