  • Nepalese chef Khadag Bista, was working in New Zealand when he had a car accident in 2018, which left him with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Doctors feared he had no chance of recovery. But, after 22 days in a coma, Khadag woke up. He then spent eight months at the Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust (LFBIT), learning to eat, speak and to walk again. Today, Khadag walks with the aid of a brace on his left leg and a walker for support; and his speech is still difficult to understand. But Khadag is a stubborn and determined character who walks 3-10 kilometres every day as part of his rehab. One of the highlights of Khadag’s week is working as a chef at Can Do Catering, a social enterprise run by the LFBIT, which hires people who have brain injuries. It is a great creative outlet for this top chef and has been integral to his recovery. Khadag says, “As long as I am in the kitchen, my heart is feeling happy”.

This is absolutely wonderful, and what an admirable person Khadag is.
I do wonder though about a person who acquired similar disability due to stroke, or some other organic disorder, and what kind of services would be available to them? ACC needs to be expanded to cover all illness and disability no matter how it was acquired. According to the vision of the person who designed the ACC system.

Khadag is awesome. Please get him some toeclips on his trike... Not the fancy clip-ins - just toeclips that keeps feet on the pedals.

In order to help him with keeping his feet on the pedals and not risking any fractures if he falls, you could perhaps install a few semi-powerful magnets on the pedals and strap a metal plate covered with a thin rubber layer or grip-tape under his feets in order to make them stick better to the pedals

Old school cage pedals or clips (a bit more fiddly) could really help with the trike :)
