  • Eric Knapp wasn’t supposed to live. The day before his 33rd birthday he suffered a series of thirteen massive strokes which almost killed him. Eric was left debilitated and had to re-learn how to walk, talk and even swallow. For a professional firefighter, whose life revolved around fitness and training, it was life-altering. But Eric was determined to not let these strokes stop him from what he loves doing the best - helping those less fortunate than himself.

This channel really makes me take a look at my own life and want to change. I’m tired of sitting in front of the TV doing nothing, I could be living life or volunteering my time and put it to some use. Very inspiring

I love this !!!!! I had a brain aneurysm at 20 which caused me to have a stoke ,I was fit , young, healthy, active with the world at my finger tips but the universe has different plans for me ,I also had to learn how to walk, talk, eat, drink,my name and everything in-between. I'm still not 100% but I'm getting there , your so inspirational and I hope to be doing what you're doing one day with helping others like us ,I learnt that you can't focus on what you're lost and what you could do you just have to find other ways to do it and that's what I've done ,I learnt how to cook one handed, tie my lace's ,tie my hair and other every day tasks so if you have the will we can do anything 😁 your doing awesome Eric

I am an occupational therapist and I used to be able to help others physically, and be very active (river kayaking/white water kayaking and long mountain bike treks). I obtained an injury on duty that my employer now refuses to accept - saying I reported it after the 5 day cut-off. I thought I only sprained my back. Turns out I blew out some discs and have vertebral stress fractures. A year on and the neurosurgeon says he can't do anything and that I will never do the things I love again. It is almost harder to live without those things than to deal with the chronic pain and neurological symptoms.
    Thanks for some motivation.
Ps. You seemed to have had a left sided hemiplegia. I know it may be hard - but I would suggest you try to learn to play guitar the other way around as your right hand has better coordination. Then you'd use the left to strum (maybe not pick, but strum at least). Keep strong.

Occupational therapist here. I absolutely love this story. I have not been able to work since 2018 due to EDS-Ehlers Danlos syndrome. It’s taken a very big toll on my life. I love when I can give advice to others and that has happened a few times recently. I keep up with groups on Facebook and when I am able I communicate with others and provide information. I do love this story. As to getting back to using the guitar I think it might be helpful if he was to complete one part of the task and then work towards putting small parts together.

Jeanne, I absolutely relate to health issues taking away our purpose. It’s one of the most difficult parts of dealing with this change I have found. Helping others is huge. ❤
