  • At 5 o'clock in the morning, on the fifth floor , on the 5th of May 2010 . A fire started to engulf the top floors of the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate .
90 firefighters from Harrogate and surrounding regions, including, Leeds and York using 3 long extendible ladders , along with 16 pumps tackled to contain the blaze .
It took 5 hours to contain.
Unfortunately there was one fatality . This film is dedicated to Nigel Butterworth . A very well liked and respected member of staff who unfortunately lost his life due to the blaze . He will always be remembered fondly and be sadly missed . This film shows the latter stages of that fire .

The room owner was working as at the majestic and took a quick ciggarette in his room, when fineshed he didnt step on the cigar and it set fire to his room.
he also died in the fire.

Thank you for your video of the events of that day, as a nearby resident I was shocked to see to all unfold

Nigel was a smoker and had epilepsy. He possibly had been smoking in his room and had a fit. The staff floor was non smoking. I very much enjoyed my time working at The Majestic.

Nicely piece of citizen journalism Rob, such a shame about the Majestic.

@kingice113 . The police and forensics are unsure at the moment. They think it was seated in the room of the man who was unfortunately caught in the blaze.

Wasn't this hotel featured in the works of James Herriott?
