I have to add a note: Pablo from blender today mentioned multiple times that Cycle-X was planned to be released in 3.1. Not 3.0. In his Q&A section, people asked whether Dev would postpone the release of 3.0 so that cycle-X can be included in 3.0 instead of 3.1, Pablo said they haven't decided yet and hoped users didn't put stress on Dev & their working schedule, etc. More importantly, he said, even if it were to be released in 3.1, it would be just 4 month later than 3.0 release. There was really no need to rush.
I think I need to add this note because the title would be really misleading if people think Cycle-X will be in 3.0 while it's, at least currently, planned to be in 3.1. People may feel angry and fight back for the fact that Cycle-X doesn't present in 3.0 eventually.

  • @esbensloth

It will not be better for every video card. They are writing it in a NVIDIA proprietary api, CUDA, which will only ever run on NVIDIA cards. Cycles stopped supporting OpenCL without commiting to an alternative for other GPU vendors.
For it to work on AMD or Intel they will need to rewrite it in a different API like Vulkan or DirectX. They claim they plan to do so. But it seems more likely that Eevee, which uses the OpenGL api, will implement raytracing first. There are already several demos written in OpenGL that do ray tracing and de-noising.

  • @imgtsmnlom

1:45 I'm a bit confused. First of all, Blender says that the difference in render times 24s vs 16s and not 21s vs 16s. But regardless, it is not 130% faster, but rather ~30% faster (21/16 - 1 ≈ 0.31) or 50% faster (24/16 - 1 = 0.5). The largest relative drop in render time seems to be for the procedural wall at 12:32, which is 89%. However nowhere do you show anything that would be 700% faster. Don't get me wrong, what the Blender team has done is insanely impressive, but I think it's good to try to be honest with the stats to not create false expectations.

    Amazing! I tried the classroom scene in 2.93 at 500 samples (2070 super and 2x 1080ti) 1m 50s. Then with just 2070 super in cycles-X at 500 samples, 1m 5 sec.
That's 41% faster, with two less GPUs!!
I don't know how it will scale when they get multiple GPUs working, but I can't wait to find out. Hopefully next CPU upgrade I can spend less then $600 on mobo because I don't need an E-ATX with three PCI x 16 slots.

Does the RTX gpu are only benefited from Cycles X or does it apply with an older GPU like GTX 1070 for example?

Perfect timing that I was able to build my new PC with the 3080 GPU.. Amazing as always. Super thankful for your truly inspiring work !

Hey Gleb, curious, did you build/ model your scenes in Blender 3.0.0? or did you pop them into this version to render them with Cycles X?

*Thankyou Sir but My pc is 32 bit so I use Blender 2.79 so I can't use it*

Perhaps you already know, but Blender 2.80 has a 32 bit release. 32 bit was dropped in 2.81 though. You can get the 32 bit 2.80 version here: download.blender.org/release/Blender2.80/
Perhaps it can be interesting if you want to get accustomed to the newer interface and some of the early features of the 2.8x branch.

@@NOTMYSCENE yeah, its there, but it is not as stable as either 2.79, 2.81 or any of the later releases unfortunately.

This is mindblowing, the EEVEE v Cycles X comparison got me off guard. Now that both the EEVEE and Cycles teams and under one single team maybe they will be able to piggyback some optimization ideas because for preview purposes (while moving the camera and look dev) responsiveness trumps image quality (to reasonable middle ground).
Ditto collaborating to the BF, I spend a somewhat reasonable amount on random patreons and decided to just add Bronze donations to Blender just because of how mindboggling their advances are and for free, I don’t even use Blender at all except for exploring and learning sometimes yet I can’t help but appreciate their work. Background: I come from 3dsmax days, the days when Brazil, Cebas FinalRender and VRay were all the rage with 2hrs long single frame renders.
    Enjoyed the rundown, subbed.
