  • My friends, in this video I'll cut one of the most enjoyable Tamiya kits with a hacksaw. And I'm also going to build a WW1-themed diorama around it! All in raw materials, the paint will come in the next episode!

Absolutely loving the WW1 representation, armour from that period is a beautiful canvas for weathering, especially with all those rivets. Hoping to see more WW1 stuff in the future, maybe an A7V? 🤔

@@NightShiftScaleModels Hmm, integrate the A7V into the diorama like a building aka as a cut-off corner piece with full interior and everything? Knowing your approach to scary new techniques is to tackle them head on this might be the best way to approach the interior of it ^^
I begin to think that WW1 tanks could work really well as part of the terrain of a diorama in general.

Best of luck finding one - i stared at ebay listings for years and never pulled the trigger. If you do get it, I highly recommend getting resin after market wheels at a minimum.

Seems like digging a crater in the foam would have been much easier (if not more dramatic) ... you could even backfill with dirt/sand to close up the gap?

Emhar make similar tank kits, both machine gun and cannon variants, and the Whippet mortar carrier variant, too, along with the huge German WW1 tank (I forget the name of it). they don't have the figures, but are well worth checking out, as I bought and built the entire set almost 30 years ago, and they're still available, as far as I know :-) Granted, Tamiya make truly beautiful kits, but they can be expensive for many model makers pockets, as I found out while working in a model shop in the 1990's, so other companies started making similar kits but much cheaper. Tamiya also started bringing out brass etch after market parts for their kits, too, which made them even more in demand :-)

Clearly you weren't happy with the surgery but as you say, the ragged cut is no longer visible.
The illusion that the rest of the tank is still there is remarkably convincing even given the absolute lack of realistic coloration or simulated water at this stage. I think it's the off-level cut that does it.
Looking forward to the finishing stages but I think you've nailed the hardest part of this diorama, a believable overall look. I remember when you were "afraid" of dioramas, and here you are doing one with an unusual degree of difficulty, and ever-so-casually including a figure superdetailed with barbed wire.
Any other old phobias you're thinking of conquering? Your viewers appreciate the inspiration.

But why not just cut a hole in the dioramas floor/ground and let the tank recess into it. Once the grading and landscape features were added youd never know ......that there WAS the bottom half of the tank in the "mud".....like real life? Lol

Have you seen Ichiban Painting? He doesn't post anymore but he's really good at making stuff look old and beat up, I think you'd dig it. Anyways this is my first introduction to your channel so I'm glad I came across it. I've got a ton of models I need to set aside some time to complete, got the Tirpitz, a King Tiger and almost every warhammer fantasy army. Got a lot of work ahead of me haha.

Fuel canister in WW1, especially that shape? Im not so sure about that, germany invented them mid 1930s and allies don't use them before WW2.

Hi Martin, GREAT job. Again. But why was necessery to cut it in half? You could just drown it, or? And what would you do with the rest? :)
