I'll be in Den Bosch in March/April, visiting from Australia, so will definitely be trying the Bossche Bol. Thanks for the recommendation 😊 Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
The apostrophe-s thingy is a hold over from the past when the second nominal declension (2e naamval) was still in regular use. It stems from the word "des" which signals ownership or dependency ("Des Hertogen Bosch", the forest *of/belonging to* the duke/the duke's forest). This declension is still common in German. Over time, "des" became shortened to just 's. In pronuncation, you can treat it like a regular s so 's-Hertogenbosch is more or less pronounced like "sertogenbos" (note that we commonly pronounce the final "sch" as a regular s). A similar thing occurs with 's-Gravenhage/Den Haag (the hedge of the count/the count's hedge). Although that city has opted to use the more colloquial Den Haag as the official name whereas 's-Hertogenbosch/Den Bosch uses the more archaic 's-Hertogenbosch as its official name.
So the genitive is reflected in the "article" ("de+s") as well as the noun ("hertog+en"). Today we use a genitive s after a noun (without apostrophe! - that would be the exception in English). So its equivalent would be "Hertogs Bos".
I'm surprised about your pronunciation of "Den Bosch" very well done! Too bad I didn't know you guys would be around, otherwise I would have offered you a drink. Love Americans! Enjoy the rest of your journey!
There is a reason why there are no unguided tours climbing the St John’s tower. Likewise there are no unguided boat tours on the RIVER Binnendieze (NOT canal!) which in the local dialect is called de diest. You need a permit to put a vessel there.
The ones straight from Den Bosch are the best ones, I love the chocolate, I love the richness of the cream, I love the pastry base... and I also invariably get horrible acid reflux from them every single time. So the last one that I ate was definitely my last one (until the next one :-S )
If you are into art you should look up Jheronimus (Jeroen) Bosch. He was an amazing painter from Den Bosch in the 15th century. His paintings are pure psychedelic and fantastical.
It was on our “must-see” list for this day, but we just didn’t have time and didn’t want to rush it, as his stuff looks so interesting. We will be back!
We often are told that certain sweet foods are not dessert, but instead “treats”, to have as a snack or with coffee. Makes sense, we just kinda of lump all sweet foods like this into the “dessert” category… juts a language difference.
Around 11 in the morning and 3 or 4 in the afternoon we consider coffee time. You are supposed to have your pastry at coffee time. It should always be had with coffee or tea. Same goes for appeltaart, tompoucen, vlaai etc. Going for coffee at a friend's house in Brabant is sometimes even called "op de sjekladebollen komen" which means coming to have a Bosschebol (or sjekladebol, aka chocolate ball). Bringing pastry to a friend's house is often called "iets voor bij de koffie meenemen" (bringing something to have with the coffee).
I have to stop you here. I paused the vlog. Never ever reverse the mayo with the ketchup pfiew. I can go on now with the vlog. Do not scare me again 🤣🤣

A tosti with mayo? Look I really like you guys but at some point, enough is enough. I almost feel betrayed, like you dont even want me subbed to this channel. Sorry, Im just going to.... I dont know, Im just very emotional right now...
The 's you comment on as "we don't understand their language, apparently". Well, most Dutch people don't either. It's "anachronistic" (not of this time, not of today's version of the langues", archaic). The ' (apostrophe) references something that didn't get written and doesn't influence pronunciation either (in the way "accents" would do). We turn "piano" into plural as "piano's" because for phonetic writing without the ' it should have been "pianoos" but with the apostrophe the o in piano remains hard (as in also - because it would be the soft o of of when we write pianos). There's already a geeky comment explaining the meaning of the 's in the formal name of what should sound like den bos in its commoners' form.
You had the one chance to ask how to pronounce van Gogh correctly. I mean, van Gogh was from the province of Noord Brabant and the way it’s pronounced in the west of the Netherlands with the harsh G is wrong. Belgian and dutch Fries are eaten with mayonnaise…period. You had Belgian fries because they are a bit thicker than dutch fries. French fries are even thinner.
Is it? I'm born and raised in Den Bosch and would like the Idea, but unfortunately, depending on the definition of "oldest city", other cities can claim that title: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oudste_stad_van_Nederland. I know I'm being nitpicking if I say that Den Bosch is not in Holland, but in Brabant. Northern Holland, southern Holland and Brabant are provinces of Brabant.
Eeeh where did you get that info? Den Bosch got city rights in 1185. At that time Nijmegen and Maastricht were already cities for over a thousand years.
@@davidc.w.2908 Like I said, it depends on how you define "city". Nijmegen and Maastricht did not have city rights earlier than Den Bosch, heck, Maastricht never got city rights! But true, Nijmegen and Maastricht are the older settlements.
Eating it with a knife and fork feels a bit like cheating. We always only got a tiny little cake fork that you couldn't put any pressure on, and we always had to wash up afterward. The only one who could miraculously eat it elegantly with just that tiny fork was a friend of my parents. But she liked to rub shoulders with high society, so that is technically cheating, probably. She always has to be mentioned whenever we eat one.

The meaning and translation from 's Hertogenbosch is:
Des Hertogen bosch (in old Dutch).
Meaning: The Duke's forest.
I once wrote a song about Den Bosch called The Duke´s Forest 😄
Excellent!
I was in virtually all places you filmed and still you managed to escape from my sight that day. Good job. 😂
We are sneaky like that… :-).
Japan has a whole tourist attraction built around this place called Huis Ten Bosch. It is impressively similar. Happy holidays btw!

Same to you! All the best!
Huis Ten Bosch is nice, but NOT located in Den Bosch.
The only thing for me is, when i eat one, i don't feel hungry for one day. It fills you up like a total meal. But delicious!
those things will feed you for a week lol. speaking from experience;-)

Holland is expensive, the Netherlands a little less so. 😉
Cheap compared to Scandinavia. You need a 30 year mortgage to buy drink in a bar in Copenhagen or Oslo.

Even though Jan de Groot are the best. There is also a place in Den Bosch where you can make your own Bossche bollen.
At Jan de Groot they make about 5,000 Bossche bollen per day.
Some little facts: 1) Bosschenaren call the Bossche Bol a "Sjekladebol" 2) Experienced people can eat a Sjekladebol without cutlery
