I never realized it bothered this many people either. We go to Virginia Beach every year and absolutely love going through this tunnel, it has always amazed me, how it was constructed, how far down it goes, I don’t know but Ryan Stout, I recommend that you go through there someday.
It has nothing scary about it. What is so fesrful? It is a simple bridge that goes underground or water for a short bit and nothing scary about that. Thousands of bridges all over and thousands of tunnels. This combines them. I can't imagine why anyone is bothered by it.
I drove a Trailways bus on this and the CBBT from Philadelphia to VA Beach. My regular route traveling from NJ to VA to visit my fam. No worries, cross winds can be interesting.
I was on a tour bus 20 yrs ago on a college tour, drove across the Hampton Roads bridge then suddenly we began to go downward and entered into the tunnel.. I had no idea what we were doing, I panicked so hard.. 1 of the scariest moments of my life. I was just thinking about that and ended up here, watching this video. 😨😰😱😫
Brings back so many memories while I was stationed there. One night I got on the motorcycle about 3 am and decided to run the tunnel as fast as I could. Over 100 MPH, True TUNNEL VISION when I shot out of there.
Years ago I visited Virginia and was able to experience this. All I'll say is I never forgot it. Don't know if that's bad or good, but it made me all of a sudden think about it.
Just drove through them for the first time this week. It was uncomfortable at first thinking that this was under water. But as I did a few times, it got easier. I live in Indiana btw.
I remember in the 70s being stationed in Norfolk and taking this tunnel every day. Hated it and the thought that not only were we under the ocean but ships were crossing above us
I'm from PA but I've been through this tunnel many many many times. This video brought me back to my childhood haha. We used to go down there a lot when I was younger. I'd like to go through it again! :)
I first rode on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel on Friday,September 22,1972. I was on a Trailways bus traveling from New Castle, Delaware to Norfolk, Virginia to report aboard my first ship in the Navy. The buses that traveled between New Castle, Delaware & Norfolk,Virginia had to be rerouted due to a Navy barge from Little Creek Amphib Base in Virginia Beach drifted in the Chesapeake Bay had hit & damage the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel which had to be closed for repairs to the bridge.
Try driving it 3 to 4 times a day. When I was working Medical non emergency transport I drove every tunnel bridge complex in one shift, yes even the CBBT.
Am I the only person who would want to walk through the tunnel at night when there isn’t any traffic and just listen to the waves and like the sounds of the ocean?
This isn’t bad I’ve been through these. If this gives you anxiety then never take the tunnel between Detroit and Canada. You’ll be down there a while in backed up traffic and you’ll see many water spots that you’ll think is water seeping through but it’s not.
I’m from Norfolk Virginia and moved back to WV for my moms family. We drive through it every time we come down to visit family and our old home 🙂 it’s pretty neat!
jaydon cornelius Josh isn't kidding...when you live there and have to commute to and from work(it's one of the major crossings of the James River) it's always jammed up...I've been through this tunnel over a thousand times to know it myself.
+josh Whitfield On average, it takes about 20 minutes to get through the tunnel. If you know the secrets to get through, its about 20 minutes whether to traffic is 3 or 6 miles. Every mile will add on about 5 minutes. The real bottleneck doesn't happen until after Mallory (the last exit) before the HRBT. Source: I drive daily from Langley to Princess Anne, VB.
4th View St. that's my exit . 5:52 So many people go into the tunnels and then slow down . 10 min later , you have a 6 mile back up . I remember when it was a single two lane tunnel with traffic going in both directions with a $1.25 toll . They have re-instated the tolls on the downtown and mid town tunnels between Norfolk and Portsmouth. There are improvements coming to the HRBT which will also see tolls being re-instated there. Lifetime area resident , never had to drive the tunnels to get to work . I pity the fools who do. Before the days of small cameras , there were attendants who manned the inside of the tunnel and walk up and down the walkway . Those little compartments were so they could go inside and close the door to get some fresh air , free from all the automobile exhaust fumes. There are huge fans which circulate the air in the tunnel to keep the air as fresh as possible, but prolonged breathing of that air , still not good. Things really get interesting when there is a vehicle fire inside the tunnel .
I was thinking that you could see the water while you were in the tunnel but since it's concrete all around or whatever the material is it wouldn't phase me unless it was a flood
I crossed it once during a hurricane and the water's waves sloshed up over the bridge parts of it. Thank goodness it has a great drainage system! It was scary to have whitecaps come sweeping up through the rails! When I was a little girl, there was only one tunnel with one lane each way. I recall my grandparents taking me to see the Admirals quite a few time at Hampton Colloseum and the traffic was always a b^&ch. My PopPop would always have us roll up the windows and turn off the ac/heat, lest we (in his belief) get CO poisoning while we sat in traffic down there. I also recall him telling me "Little Missy, we are about to go through the Straw to Hampton." That's what he told me we were in-a drinking straw and he was right. He's in his nineties now and my beloved grandmother is long gone, but those memories live on! They added the second tunnel to provide two lanes going each way and later, yellowish lights at the entrance (you can see these for a bit at the entrance) to keep out-of-towners from slamming on their brakes due to the change in lighting when coming in and going out of the tunnel. I also recall a time when your radio would cut off as you descended into the tunnel. Now, that does not happen-seamless reception the whole trip, thanks to technology! My Gramps was in the Navy (3-War veteran) and he said the navy ships that go through there have keels(?-is that what it's called?) that come within feet of the mud bed that that tunnel lays under.
Trust me on this...The 'Moniter/Merrimac' bridge is the better tunnel, HRBT can be a bottle neck hell hole in rush hour! Tidewater...still today has the most accounted underwater tunnels in a single area, and Virginia struggles to keep this metropolis to a par based on it's traffic volume and jams. But still in the excessive time you will spend in your commutes, this area carries it own unique beauty and it's best to drive these tunnels with a beat up old clunker, because a Ferrari will not get you anywhere fast(only maybe a early Sunday morning keeping in mind the that Mr. Va. State Trooper is somewhere hidden around the corner!).....besides how many times it has been that a beat up old clunker has stalled out in the bottom of one of these tunnels!
What stood out to me when I went under it,was before entering the tunnel. Looking on the side,it looked like the water was going to splash on the road. An just knowing I was under water I drove as quickly as I could. But if I remember got in some slow moving traffic. That made it bad
ClaireP2603 i have lived in hampton my whole life we have 5 bridges around here that all have tunnels for short distance. they construct these tunnels in sections then float them out in the bay and fill them with water sink them and then connect them together, once the tunnel shell is complete they pump the water out ,and complete the inside work and connect to bridges on each end.
I drive a 18wheeler through it everyday , its just a damn tunnel , absolutely nothing to be afraid of but if you are , STAY ON 17 AND GO ACROSS THE JAMES RIVER BRIDGE AND QUIT SLOWING ME DOWN SO I CAN DO MY JOB !
The way people were going on about it on Facebook I thought there might be something different about experiencing it, but it's just a plain ol' bridge and tunnel. No big deal.
Are you comparing this facility to the bridge over Lake Pontchartrain? No. The HRBT is only 3.5 miles long. Lake Ponchartrain is almost 24 miles long. However, the nearby Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel between Virginia Beach and the Virginia Eastern Shore at 23 miles.
Yes it is, we go to Virginia Beach every year for vacation from WV and we pass through it, it’s very neat, especially thinking about the work it took to build this or how far down it descends, but yes it is real.
yes it's very true I took my family to Virginia beach last summer and we went thru it too. It is not scary at all and my wife didn't even believe that we were under water (she gets scared easily)
i thought u could see the fishes
i didn't realize people were so scared. I drive through it everyday. I guess because we locals are used to it.
Nate Barnes I'm not local and I wouldnt mind it
I never realized it bothered this many people either. We go to Virginia Beach every year and absolutely love going through this tunnel, it has always amazed me, how it was constructed, how far down it goes, I don’t know but Ryan Stout, I recommend that you go through there someday.
Really? I don't live in Hampton but I use to live in the East Coast until 1992 and I think I went through some of these tunnels with no problem.
It has nothing scary about it. What is so fesrful? It is a simple bridge that goes underground or water for a short bit and nothing scary about that. Thousands of bridges all over and thousands of tunnels. This combines them. I can't imagine why anyone is bothered by it.
It’s the bridge that scares people, specifically truck drivers. Several trucks have gone over the bridge due to strong gusts of wind.
I've been through the underwater bridge before a few times.
It makes me surprisingly calm.
I had a panic attack watching the video. NO WAY I could drive through that!
Not as bad as it looks. I'm terrified of water and was fine.
I drove a Trailways bus on this and the CBBT from Philadelphia to VA Beach. My regular route traveling from NJ to VA to visit my fam. No worries, cross winds can be interesting.
Tidewater 757 lol everyday..

The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT). Folks, it is usually backed up. I live in Hampton, VA. This bridge-tunnel isn’t scary at all.

Back then was only one tube. Was a little more hairy with traffic coming at you. They are currently expanding it again to 3 lanes each way.
Wow..I used to drive from Hampton to Va Beach everyday to go to work. I'm in NY now so it brings back memories. Thanks for the video.
SMILES DAMILL about how long is that?
I'm from PA but I've been through this tunnel many many many times. This video brought me back to my childhood haha. We used to go down there a lot when I was younger. I'd like to go through it again! :)

i love tunnels, especially this one. it's my all time favorite one in virginia.
i have been through this tunnel a few times myself. it's awesome. i'm an underwater tunnel fanatic.
I love traveling through tunnels they're so cool. 😄
Try driving it 3 to 4 times a day. When I was working Medical non emergency transport I drove every tunnel bridge complex in one shift, yes even the CBBT.
What does CBBT stand for if you don't mind me asking?
@@adellluke8196 Chespeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
That one scared me half to death only because I can't swim and being around that much water....OMG. I'm nervous just talking about it. Lol.
Am I the only person who would want to walk through the tunnel at night when there isn’t any traffic and just listen to the waves and like the sounds of the ocean?
There’s never not traffic in that tunnel and you’re so far down/the walls are so thick, you can’t hear the ocean.
Amazing videoLooks good Thanks for sharing
"Oh hold on I'm going through the tunnel let me do 20 in a 55" - almost everybody who uses the Hampton roads bridge tunnels
I was stationed there from 2009-2014 I drove that road everyday to the base
I wouldn't want to drive through that in a storm when the waves are out of control.
Oh that could very much flood the tunnel. You remember what happened back in 2009.
impressive that these exist
On this video at 1:21 right top of the ceiling (Big brown spot). Is that water oxidation?
I saw that too!!! A leak ? The big rusted spot?!
I hate this! how deep down does the tunnel go? Did I see an office in there? I feel sorry for the poor souls who have to work in there!
I live in Hampton roads. It really isn't that bad
@@obihighgroundkenobi Born in Hampton
@@thiebaude your in Hampton as well? Cool
They dont HAVE to work there. They can find another job.
I live in Virginia Beach but I go through it every weekend to Newport News to see my grandparents.
That's too much damn water to drink
2:40 I can hear seagulls. Yay!!
The naval air craft carriers come through there back and forth too and from the base.
used to love going under the bridge when I was younger now its just a normal thing
I would have a fucking heart attack I gotta see my surroundings.

Every time I'm stuck in that tunnel I scream to myself, should have taken the monitor Merrimac Bridge tunnel.
drove this the other day, so cool and the view is so pretty and cool at night. u can only see the skyline, u cant see the water bc its pitch black
I'm from Hampton and Everytime I go to Norfolk my ears pop but if u never drove through a tunnel like this u would love it..
Your upload is much appreciated. Thank you. Best of luck for your future! 💗
This must be fake because the tunnel I know is always backed up lol
Nowadays it's backed up almost to Darling Stadium
I went through this tunnel in 2013 when I was going to VA beach it wasn't really busy either.
lol...well more frustrating, than it's funny! Betcha they photoshop video this!

Get to drive across/through it tomorrow! Kinda nervous
Imagine if somebody had a wreck.
Expect to wait literally hours to get to your destination because of backed up traffic. I drove that tunnel a lot at one point.
I drove on this bridge and did not realize that it went underwater. It was no big deal at the time.
This make my anxiety level so high omg 😯
i don't think i would have travelled through this! no way!! (great engineering though).

Does the tunnel go through the water or under the seabed, I'm confused because the tunnel only goes down a little bit

The tunnels are in trenches. Naval vessels and container ships need at least 40 feet draft;I believe the tunnels are at least 80 feet below the water.

MY LORD, THATS THE LONGEST TUNNEL. AND ITS VERY DANGEROUS IF ITS UNDER WATER. THOUGH MEN OF EXCELLENT SKILL
I live in va my grandson attends norfolk state I go through there often it doesn't bother me
Ain’t nothin but a damn thang. Drive this to and from the naval base every day. Not to mention the HOURS of traffic you have to sit in.
is this longer than the new orleans bridge?

Really fun in a semi.
why do they have to make it underwater? of course there must be why I suppose a bridge will be more safer
