What is actually being done during engine break-in is the controlled bedding, or wearing-in, of the new piston rings on the hone of the cylinder walls. “We are trying to bed those rings so that they achieve a correct seal against the cylinder walls, and we have a relatively narrow window in which to do this. Once we achieve that seal, we end up with an engine that creates good power, has low blow-by, and has low oil consumption in the case of 4 stokes. We are using the rough surface of the hone pattern to abrade the rings and make them seat. The crosshatch pattern of the hone in the cylinder like a file on the outer surface is creating a perfect fit within the bore. While that may sound simple - and really, the actual mechanics of it are - the process to actually achieve that is a delicate balancing act, as that crosshatch is only abrasive for a limited amount of time. The reason there’s a narrow window is because that hone pattern will be broken down in time. The process of hysteresis of metal due to heat cycling happens over a much longer period of time. It was way less critical to a good ring seal. The worst thing you can do while breaking in an engine is baby the engine or allow it to idle for extended periods, particularly when it’s hot. That will place almost no combustion load on the rings and it will allow that hone pattern to be broken down without actually performing its job of seating the rings properly.
My 2009 KYmco Super 9 AC Sports, has needed this for quit some time, I kept getting a low compression diagnoses and will try this technique. Thank you for your very nice video. D. P. Householder
4 years later but i bought a 70cc, do i need to drive it at all or do it just need to do this over and over to break it in? thx in advance if you have the time to respond 💪
I have a 2001 yamaha zuma. Running a polini variator kit with yellow springs and stock pipe.what pipe should i put on and what roller weight should i go with for that pipe
@@Scooterswapshop thanks so much can, you provide me a number so i can give you a cal and order everything i need. I would like to get my bike above 40. Im jellous over your red zuma lol
if it still has compression and there’s no signs or rubbing or anything and it’s a cast iron cylinder yeah you can cast irons very forgiving i had 6 soft seizures and still ran the piston and bore
I really like how this scooter looks Could you please give me some info on the wheels? Are the wheels from another scooter and do they bolt right up? Thanks in advance 🙂👍
Please can I ask a Zuma question. I have a 1992 Zuma here in the uk. It’s still a 50cc but I have fitted a Polini Hi Speed kit and a Tecnigas Silent Pro exhaust. It gets it around 72kph but takes its time. I want the fit the 70cc Polini Corsa kit so what would you change for a nice road setup ? Thank you
@@Scooterswapshop thanks for the quick response, I just found your old Zuma bundle list on your webpage so that has given me a good list. 👍🏻 will junk the variator and swap it out.
Hey, it's 2 years later. Does this still apply, or have you learned something new and do something different now? I just ordered a Naraku 75cc kit for my Kymco Super Fever(same engine as AF18), and it's probably coming tomorrow. I have a stock carb, do you think i should rush to get a better one, or am I fine with just a different jet? Pilot jet can't be swapped on it. I'm using the stock airbox and stock exhaust.
What mix ratio do you run during break in and after break in. I deleted the oil pump for more reliability and I was tired of the hose on the oil Reservoir falling off and all my oil coming out when I run expensive oil. What do you recommend?
I've been working on this scooter for a while now I ordered some parts from the manufacturer and then some aftermarket performance parts like a tune muffler I have put on a performance Coil I am trying to figure out I have the stock carborator It is running now but it's definitely not running right There's anybody around that can work on it and beef it up And I did order some performance carburetors intake but without doing a board kit It will not build on to the stock and I'm not very sure on what to do next if there's any advice you could give me I would greatly and I repeat that greatly appreciate it
be careful with those 'performance coils' make sure you stick to brand name, 49cc scoot did a big comparison and those common orange ones are far far worse than stock and constant missfires.

The polini variator kit is a faulty design. No matter what you do you can’t get it to work right. We determined this last year.

yooowsss gaming you can’t install an internal water pump in a motor that didn’t come with one unfortunately

The polini variator is a flawed design. Start by removing it and installing a malossi or better one
