  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The internet is a powerful tool with many layers. Kyle Terry shares his exploration of one of the deepest layers: the darknet.
    Kyle Terry was destined to become a computer historian. Having worked as a systems administrator, software engineer, and senior devops engineer, he's explored many aspects of computing and is qualified to speak on a broad range of topics. See his history of the internet presentation here: kyleterry.com/tedxsalem.html
    About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

      +D'andre Chesterfield A lot of people visit these sites out of curiosity, nothing wrong with
      that, many people do not know that their activities are stored and can
      actually be tracked later, and hence they "research" on these sites for
      information and risk assessment: Ofc what they want to hear is, Tor /
      Tails etc. is 100% anonymous and I can look at whatever on the dark web.
      Reality, however is different, and I believe they deserve this
      information, so they can make up with themselves, if this is actually
      worth the risk for them.
      Knowledge is power, use this to your advantage. Stay safe guys

    I am so happy to C young people fighting for privacy. I am old schools and I am a privacy advocate. I had some one say to me "you have to understand young people have little need for privacy because they give it all away on facebook,twitter,youtube,ETC.." .When I digested what he said he was spot on. I responded with "I see nothing bad or wrong with young people giving their privacy away on facebook,twitter,youtube ETC as long as it is by choice". What I want so bad for the young generation to know is that your choice is going away and once it is gone they will take your internet away..The battle for privacy online has nothing to do with fighting child porn or terrorist and everything to do with the social power and information that is at every ones fingertips who has internet access.Control of this power is what they want.The first steps in taking control is to take your privacy.

    • @skbartistry2473
      @skbartistry2473 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tim Law lol, they're not going to take the internet away. Iran tried to do that and Anonymous was immediatly there and helped them getting back online. In case you dont know, then Anonymous are not bad guys. They're the sole reason as to why no one can remove the privacy and free internet of the people. There will always be a way. Governments and multinational corporations are welcome to do all they can to control peoples lives. They will just be asking for more shit, cause people will always find a way.
      Btw, your privacy online is only gone as long as you agree to it being gone. Once you deactivate your social media accounts, then everything there will be disconnected from your private life, aka they are not allowed to survey anymore. Then there are the programs that places your IP in another country and turning off location and flashplayers, Java and such. And if one is really into code, then there's always the option of programming your way back to online privacy 😊

    • @pietandersen6120
      @pietandersen6120 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tim Law And once they have their privacy and a currency the governments cant control, then they will be people the governments cant control, then they will have a world the governments cant control, policed by those who stand for justice, fought for not by the honeyed words of politicians, but by the people who would stand for what is right and led by those that are not woven into lies, but by the ones who would lead for the people. We will have a world that is for once truly of the people! by the people! and for the people!
      Or, who knows, maybe the racists, greedy, bigots and criminals will kill and loot everything and we will all be fucked.

    • @jacobw6629
      @jacobw6629 8 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      +ilparola TOR has been compromised, and is no longer necessarily anonymous. The whole point of TOR was to provide a secure, anonymous network, so the government having a backdoor to sniff network traffic would defeat the purpose. Despite what they would like you to believe, they do not have a monopoly on the world's best engineers and coders. They used to have a hard time following the hops, and would thus lose the trail to what you were searching for. They can now peel back the encryption fast enough to follow the hops, meaning if they wanted to see what you were searching, they can. But first they would have to want to see what you specifically were searching. All that really means for the average Joe using TOR is that they better not make it onto a surveillance list, or they run the risk of using an anonymous service that is being sniffed by the feds. Big news for journalists and political dissidents, not so much for people who just want to watch porn without the NSA knowing their kink.

      Yes, and my comment is dumbed-down for the layman, as I find most people using TOR are not network or server specialists, and really just want a basic version of what is going on. My previous comment is incorrect in it's description of how they are monitoring traffic as most people don't want to hear about monitoring a certain percentage of nodes with common router firmware, so I gave them something that, while technically wrong, gets the point across.
      Also, if you are looking for some sources that don't require reading through collegiate papers, here ya go:
      www.computerworld.com/article/2863937/snowden-docs-show-tor-truecrypt-tails-topped-nsas-most-wanted-list-in-12.html
      This has been old news for a while. The NSA and FBI have been looking to do this for years, and honestly I'm surprised it took them this long as it is. TOR was never a guarantee, just a really fancy shell game, but it looks like the high speed cameras have caught up. Go figure.

      LMAO I'm pretty sure that it doesn't take anything so scandalous as downloading TOR to end you up on a watch list anymore. But if you'd like a surefire bet for how to end up on one, TOR is a fast pass. It doesn't matter though, they dragnet email and phone conversations, so if you even talk about it they probably flag your information. Such is the name of the game for the NSA anymore. Sad days.

    • @cestarianinhabitant5898
      @cestarianinhabitant5898 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Angus Kane You didn't know? In a nutshell, Windows 10 tracks every file in your computer, every word document or email you write or read, (literally) every keystroke you make, and well... yeah, just E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. you do, or on your computer is forwarded to microsoft's servers.
      And microsoft are not even trying to hide this; and they say you can turn much of this stuff off, but not all (I mean they have officially on record stated that not all surveillance can be disabled in windows 10), which indeed, you can't (and there are a few programs out there which claim they can, many of which is spyware and the remaining few are probably not bulletproof)
      It gets worse if you read their services agreement (and this applies to all people logged in to windows 10 on a live account, all xbox users, all people using oh idk, their office pack and outlook, etc, but not windows 10 directly (although I am sure that doesn't mean a thing since most of this is part of windows 10 anyways))
      Here, really, knock yourself out www.microsoft.com/en-us/servicesagreement/
      Get a load of article 2.b. or this snippet: "to improve Microsoft products and services, you grant to Microsoft a worldwide and royalty-free intellectual property license to use Your Content" and sure, sure, you can argue that microsoft are probably not going to actually steal somebody's program or artwork or other work related files and publish for their own.
      But the fact that this is there means that they may at any point decide to think about doing it, and doesn't it just raise a fucking eyebrow for you that they put this in their services agreement?.
      I'm sure I didn't even catch everything wrong with Windows 10, but it bugs the living shit out of me when I talk about this stuff online, that people are actually trying to defend Microsoft's complete disregard for human rights, even to the point of glorifying windows. And I cannot imagine any other reason for this happening besides these people being in denial, because the thought of abandoning windows for unknowns like linux, or shit they don't like OS X (which I would argue is probably no better than windows in any single way, so really linux is the only real option, and other open source operating systems) it scares them. They are afraid of abandoning what they know, so they go into denial and outright deny the need for change, the need to take a stance against these corporate mother fuckers and put on the breaks, because this shit is not ok.
      Wi-Fi Sense was also part of the problem (biggest fattest security hole in any operating system ever made) but I hear they cancelled that crap the other day, if they really did I will stop my policy of not even allowing any friend who uses Windows 10 to log in to my wireless network. Because you know, I don't want just anyone to be able to without effort.
      The only sane thing to do is stick with windows 7, uninstall any updates after Windows 10's announcements (because these tracking features actually got added in to 7 via updates), and find a linux distribution to stick with (I recommend fedora with cinnamon (and I recommend it over linux mint, but that one is also ok), or kubuntu, I can not recommend ubuntu, but for people who like apple type interfaces, debian would be a good choice instead if you don't mind some of the programs running a bit older versions). And you should only really stick with Windows 7 because I'm sure you'll want to dual boot while first using linux, and give yourself some time to adapt to it, find alternatives to your favorite windows software that does not run on Linux (I honestly managed to find alternatives for everything, to my huge surprise because I have rather specific needs; but it took me a long time to find them all, and test various alternatives that didn't work out for me); because the truth is that Microsoft has been doing similar stuff since Window 95 or earlier. They just haven't been doing it this openly, and probably not to this level of extreme, but you are still vulnerable to all this surveillance by just using a windows operating system, just not as vulnerable as on Windows 10. (I think, can not confirm but I think that with older versions of windows they have surveillance options built in in such a way that you need to be specifically a target of surveillance by NSA or FBI for them to use backdoors to get in your system and check your shit out, it's more roundabout than just directly taking all the files and well, sharing it with them)

    • @benjaminclement8437
      @benjaminclement8437 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Cestarian Inhabitant You are correct but a simple google search you will find you can disable all of the above mentioned features as I have done!

    • @cestarianinhabitant5898
      @cestarianinhabitant5898 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Benjamin Clement Yeah, cus you can disable the services agreement...
      Also, as I said before "And microsoft are not even trying to hide this; and they say you can turn much of this stuff off, but not all (I mean they have officially on record stated that not all surveillance can be disabled in windows 10), which indeed, you can't (and there are a few programs out there which claim they can, many of which is spyware and the remaining few are probably not bulletproof)"
      These programs, are you really confident in their ability to lock out microsoft from your system? That would be kinda stupid, when microsoft are the ones who created the operating system and have full control over the kernel and could have put god knows what kind of toxic shit in there which these programs can't do anything about. Which is why as I said, the only sane choice is to use Windows 7 while transitioning to Linux or another open source OS, then dumping microsoft's ass because we're in an abusive relationship with these fuckers.

    • @benjaminclement8437
      @benjaminclement8437 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do things the old fashion way on computer it's the only way to be sure!
      However yes there may be registry I fail to modify or exe, CMD, DLL's ect I have missed modifying, nothing is bulletproof and I gaurentee you this type of stuff has been and still is in most if not all operating systems, windows 10 is just the first time they openly let the public know about it, to merely gauge how far we can be dominated at the moment, xbox did the same and can turn there spy stuff on (if it is even off) anytime they want people still bought them!
      Now something that someone keeps on them almost always, can emit different frequency (can be used to disable a person via noise), it gets given most of if not all your information, the way to use it is to put a small thing inside it that you must be registered, is used by almost all for there everyday needs and we can sell to everyone year after year with better surveillance inside and higher prices!
      Oh wait already been invented and sold to the unaware public, they are called mobile phones.
      Gee Microsoft with windows 10 is just trying to play catch up in the whole surveillance game and we know how much Microsoft love stealing other peoples ideas!
      There is this other awesome tool know as social networking eg FB, myspace, Twitter ect that most people use and they do a pretty good job at surveillance too!
      Saying windows 7 is any better than windows 10 is laughable (they both suck for surveillance) and gives me the impression you do not no to much about how the surveillance game is played or just how long it has been waging!
      PS I totaly agree it sucks and should not be done and I wish it was just that easy to move to a diffrent OS however I am a gamer so no other OS can game at this point in time (not really game eg apple) but your phone is a way bigger threat than your OS and you should look at what effect sounds even non audible to us can have on a person and exactly what type of frequencies our phones use!
      Did you know the legal stuff sent to you with your phone lets you know that the phone within 5m of your brain is unsafe in fact it makes it clear you must never have the phone within 5m of your head, now this is of course in the very boring legal crap that no one reads or now more commonly is hidden somewhere on the manufactures website, now how are we meant to safely use our phone if we cant get within 5m of it? They may by now have stopped mentioning this completely as quite a few people started taking photos of the manuals and uploading pdf version highlighting the insanity of this!

    The dark net is the future towards people's privacy and anonymity . What needs to happen is that the community using it can protect themselves from the extremes who also use it, I think they can but it needs some negotiation.

      What do you think all the ads you see on TH-cam, Facebook, etc are?
      Companies trying to promote themselves.
      So how is it okay for a big company (McDonalds for example), to promote themselves when everybody, worldwide, knows who they are. But when a less known person tries to do it on a MUCH smaller scale, it's all of a sudden a bad thing?
