Wes is right on this. The MPs stood on the manifesto and the constituents voted based on that manifesto, or at least they have to assume that they did. Their votes weren't going to chance whether the cap was in place so it was performance art. Starmer wants to remove the cap, the entire party wants to remove the cap, but they can't do it yet.
There's also a theory that what they did will delay the removal of the cap to avoid Starmer looking weak. Hopefully he's thick skinned enough not to keep it in place just to prove a point, but either way there's even less money left than they thought right now.
Will there be a delay on sending more weapons to prolong the war in Ukraine and increasing payments to NATO from our taxes " until we can afford it". Probably not, so its a matter of what your priorities are and obviously the working class comes last.

Morning Dave, Those 7 mp's were elected by their constituents on the basis of a party manifesto. At 18-days into their term of office, to vote directly against that manifesto and how it was presented in the King's speech, was NOT representing the views of their constituents. It was performance art as politics and a complete waste of their talents as left-wing mp's because now, they will be on the sidelines grumbling instead of being inside government and influencing policy. And now Corbyn wants them to join him in some kind of independent alliance in order to ...do what? Have they learned nothing from 14-years on the opposition benches? Be in no doubt. The Tories have left the country's finances in the most awful mess. Child poverty is a priority, but it cannot be fully addressed without the proper funding. Keep your powder dry until after the autumn budget because by then we'll know where this government are heading.
American here. Is it customary to suspend or expel MPs because they departed from the party leader's position on one or more votes? Over here, we don't do that at all, and there are plenty of bills supported by the majority party in the House or Senate which never get passed because some members of the majority party vote against it. I'm not saying our way is better, I'm just curious if MPs in the majority party are not allowed to stray from the party's leadership on all bills. PS: And even I was shocked at Streeting's statement that the Labour MPs were there to follow through on the King's orders. In a democracy, the representatives primary loyalty is to his constituents, not to any leader or monarch. I thought your monarchy was just a big glitzy Public Relations thing anyway, they don't really run the government.

Those 7 mp's were elected by their constituents on the basis of a party manifesto. At 18-days into their term of office, to vote directly against that manifesto and how it was presented in the King's speech, was NOT representing the views of their constituents. It was performance art as politics and a complete waste of their talents as left-wing mp's because now, they will be on the sidelines grumbling instead of being inside government and influencing policy. And now Corbyn wants them to join him in some kind of independent alliance in order to ...do what? Have they learned nothing from 14-years on the opposition benches?
Be in no doubt. The Tories have left the country's finances in the most awful mess. Child poverty is a priority, but it cannot be fully addressed without the proper funding. Keep your powder dry until after the autumn budget because by then we'll know where this government are heading.

American here. Is it customary to suspend or expel MPs because they departed from the party leader's position on one or more votes? Over here, we don't do that at all, and there are plenty of bills supported by the majority party in the House or Senate which never get passed because some members of the majority party vote against it. I'm not saying our way is better, I'm just curious if MPs in the majority party are not allowed to stray from the party's leadership on all bills.
PS: And even I was shocked at Streeting's statement that the Labour MPs were there to follow through on the King's orders. In a democracy, the representatives primary loyalty is to his constituents, not to any leader or monarch. I thought your monarchy was just a big glitzy Public Relations thing anyway, they don't really run the government.
