- Rebuilding my DRZ400 water pump which has a slightly leaky oil seal, and possibly a very minimal coolant leak.

This is not exactly a how-to video, but it can be useful. If you are using this video as a reference, be sure to replace the side cover gasket which is not shown in my video. Other things not shown in my video which should be done include: greasing the impeller rod on reassembly when inserting it into the pump assembly (and try not to remove it after inserting it because the slit for the e-clip is very sharp and may damage the oil seal); putting a little grease on the o-rings (and "b-ring" as I call it) so they stick to the pump assembly; and I torque all the side cover bolts to 84 in/lbs, although that's just my preference. Don't use loctite on anything. Also: If you use a blind bearing puller for the two bearings, use the 10mm fitting (not the 8mm which I use in the video). And then obviously don't forget to refill with oil and coolant. Wait 24 hours before running the engine if you adhered the coolant seal with RTV silicone.
Excellent job on the entire water pump rebuild. The black o ring at 1:17 attached to the main side case is what leaks. Its a closed system. If the main propeller seal was leaking you would be getting oil contamination or vise versa.

Idk if this is too old to ask a question but do I need to remove the oil seal behind the second bearing and did I see it wrong or did you only re install the most outward bearing?
You should replace all the seals and bearings. I replaced them all in this video
did you use lock tight on any of the side bolts, and do you know the torque specks. if that even matters.
No loctite needed. I torqued them down I think to 84 inch pounds.

I ordered a pump rebuild it - Can you use a press to push the bearings out from the other side? Or do you need to use the blind hole bearing pullers?
Also where did you find the torque settings for the bolts?
You need a bearing puller because the mechanical seal and oil seal block access to the bearings from the other side.
I don't think the side cover bolts have a torque setting, but I always use 7 ft/lb.

@@madmarc could you not just ram the press through the seal and push the bearings out?
@@Booki89 no, once you see it you'll understand why that wont work. You might be able to heat the assembly in an oven and hope it will expand enough for the bearings to fall out but there's guarantee that will work. If you do your own bike work a bearing puller will come in handy for many more jobs.

Where did you place the second oil seal? I see you placed the first behind bearings. But didn’t see where you installed the second.
The kit comes with two oil seals. You only need to use one of them. The reason they include two oil seals is because some models have a smaller seal and others have a slightly larger seal.

Can this be a source of coolant in the oil, have already checked welch plugs and are good, but I am mixing fluids and it is driving me nutz, bike runs tits otherwise.
If both seals have gone bad and the impeller shaft is worn I think yes that could be the problem. But you would also see coolant and oil leaking from underneath the water pump. If you dont then it may be from a bad gasket.
Does it matter how to install oil seal? I couldn't see on video the seal between bearings and mechanical seal was installed.

@@madmarc also Im going replace the impeller. The shaft has two grooves made by the oil seal. I think even I replace seals it might start leak again soon.

How do you know when the water pump is due for a rebuild?

What’s the torque for the crankcase cover bolts ?
They don't specify torque in the service manual. But I tighten them at 7 ft/lb (84 in lb).

My coolant still leaks a little bit thru the weep hole after I replaced all seals even new impeller shaft. ☹
Dry it and take it on a couple more rides, and make sure that the coolant drain plug is tight, then check again.
I thought mine was leaking too after i fixed it but the drain plug was not tight enough.
@@madmarc ok I'll do that. Thanks for quick response .If it'll keep seeping I'll order rebuild kit through the dealer. Because the rebuild kit I have installed is aftermarket. Reviews were good though the name is hot rod.

@@madmarc hello so finally weather was nice I took my bike to ride and it was no leaks when I was on dunes, after I returned home and motor cool down I noticed it has a few drops of coolant, is it normal? Seems when motor hot when it cooles down it leaks a little bit🤷♂️
@@vb5037 Hmmm, i haven't had any drops on mine, it's been totally sealed, but I also havent ridden it in hot weather. I guess summer will be the test for me.
Is it at least better than it was before, or it's leaking the same amount? If it's just a couple drops it's probably fine for now. Just keep an eye on the coolant level in your radiators.
Don't mess around like this; just buy a new waterpump and fit it.
If your impeller shaft is worn than you'd need to replace it, but if it's just the seals this fix works fine. It's been almost a year and not a drop of oil or coolant has made its way through.
