For like 10 years they were averaging 50/60 goals each every season, that's unseen, while the rest of the elite forwards were averaging 25/30. That's how insane they were, they could have in a season more goals then a whole top 10 team front line of forwards.

    • @mydogiscalledoscar

Yeah. A 30 goal per season striker in a top 5 league would fetch ~ €100m. That's an elite bracket.
These guys were aliens. For my money, they're the 2 greatest footballers who ever lived.

Ronaldo x Messi was the greatest era of football. They are healthy rivals and their rivalry was something different, something unique, something from a epic movie, book. Nobody could have predicted this.
I rember all of this happening all over the years. You could go to any place on this planet and people would know about Cristiano vs Messi, people would watch each one of their El Clássicos and Champions League matches, I remember being surprised many times with the things these two did. One day Messi was saving Argentina and Barcelona and the world was saying he was better. Literally the next day Ronaldo would show up and save his club or country. This happened many times throughout the years. I remember working and at my workplace, at the streets, at the mall, at the bar and restaurant people where watching and suddenly you hear the reaction... It was Cristiano doing something crazy or Messi doing something crazy... Oh man... You have no idea how great this sport is. You can go anywhere on the planet and people know how to play, they understand the culture, if they don't they ar least know who these two are and exactly how great they are.
Keep driving on this sport. You won't regreat it. You can have many good moments throughout your lives watching or playing in real life or even at videogame. I bet even the USA will be on fire during the World Cup. Go out and watch any World Cup match. Even if the game isn't as good the importance of it and the world literally stopping to pay attention to it will make it a giant game. Half of the planet watch the World Cup, it's a short, dense and intense thing. I honestly can't wait.
I love other sports too, I love the NBA and NFL but you can't match something this popular, this big, this historically rich. Each country have it's particular history, football culture, football style, football philosophy etc. It's something amazing. You should try to learn about the different clubs and fans all over the world, just an overall view of the map of football. Each of these teams have millions and millions of fans. I would say that at least 200 clubs have more than 1 million fans on Earth, some have 50 million fans or more.

Between 2008 and 2018 only 3 teams other than Ronaldos Real Madrid and Manchester United or Messis FC Barcelona won the Champions League trophy (Inter Milan 2010, Chelsea London 2012, Bayern Munich 2013).
Between 2008 and 2021 the Ballon d'Or (MVP) was only given to Luca Modric (2018) other than them both.
There is almost no record they didn't break.
But for me this duel was so amazing, because both sides were so different:
Messi is the technical player, Ronaldo the more physical player.
Messis talent was 'given by god', Ronaldo is maybe the hardest working player there is or was.
Ronaldo is the flashy celebrity, dating super models. Messi is the quiet kind of guy, with the same girl back from his city in Argentina.
"[For FC Barcelona...] Winning becomes less important, because it is important to win in the “right way”.In Madrid, winning is the ultimate goal. The club exists to win."
Both of the players fitted perfectly the style of their teams:
At that time, many players of Barcelona came from the region and/or their own academy. They played beautiful football as a team (TikiTaka).
Real is always going for an all-star team (galacticos). The style of Madrid was more straight forward an aggressive.
Real Madrid is the Club of the spanish capital and the king of Spain (Real..), FC Barcelona the team of Catalonia, a region which wants to separate from Spain.
This wasn't only a fight between two different players, but between two clubs with different ideologies from two different regions in Spain with political history. At their peak.

Man this gives me nostalgia and goosebumps .. Early 90s kids will understand growing up with these two legends, I remember in 2009/2010 I was a highschool freshman, the whole world was already following CR7 in Man United and following Messi in Barcelona. The day CR7 joined Real Madrid was like a dream come true to everyone, not just football enthusiasts. I am not that crazy about football myself but these two legends made everyone love the game again, from all ages and throughout the whole world. The day El Classico was on, everyone was watching it, all coffeeshops were packed, the whole city was holding its breath, literally everyone was fan of both legends and because of that they loved the teams they were playing for. I get tears in my eyes when I remember these days, of course the day Messi left for PSG and CR7 left for Juve was a very sad day in football. In my opinion, it even sadder for Messi because he went to a country that is not really interesting in terms of teams etc. However, CR7 went for Italy which has more exciting games + he was still breaking records there and now he's back home at Man United, at a time where there is Mo Salah at Liverpool, another magnificent player which makes everyone wants to watch a legend VS a superstar. The same scenes of packed coffeeshops went back, and a lot of people currently are watching England but on a lower level that was in CR7 vs Messi days, that was a time that will really never happen again in football history.

28:20 yes you can tie in football. In playoff competitions you can't tie if it's a single game playoffs. If it's home and away match playoff you can tie only the first match. When ties aren't allowed the matches goes into extra time, two halfs of 15 minutes each and if the tie continue the game ends on penalties.

There can be ties in a game, but it depends on what type of match is being played. Nick is right about the point system. That gets used in all the domestic leagues: Premier League, La liga, Serie A etc. However in champions league and the other cup-formats there is a knockout stage. If a tie happens in those games they usually play till a winner has been decided. Thats when extra-time (added 30'minutes after the initial 90*) gets into play.
    Hope that helps:)

Even though it was considered a rivalry, you have to tip your hat to them both. There will never be a period like that in football where two greats dominated the game by both being the best players for their respected clubs. That time frame of them two just winning the ballon d’or is just an example of how both of them are on a different level than most.

El Clásico is (alongside Liverpool vs Manchester United) the biggest and most watched club football match each season because they are two of the biggest clubs in world football. I went to my first and only el clasico 2 years ago at the Bernabéu (Real Madrid’s stadium). The atmosphere was incredible. Both teams and the Spanish league in general aren’t as strong as they used to be. In the era of Messi and CR7, the Spanish league was the best in the world by far. Now it is the premier league. Love the growth of your channel. Keep up the good work. Oh and the Golden Ball trophies you kept seeing in the vid is the Balon D’or or World Player of the Year award. It is the award given to the best player in the world each season. During the late 2000s it was basically shared between Messi and CR7 as they were posting up ridiculous scoring records season dates season. They set a level that has never been seen before in the history of football which goes back over 100 years. Most players score around 20 - 25 goals in one season. That used to be the average and even then only a handful of players could achieve it do. For a period of about 5 years, Messi and CR7 were scoring 50 goals and more EVERY season. Just incredible.

I remember my favorite el Classico that I watched live was the one where Messi had a black eye and bloody mouth. The score was 3-2 for Barcelona. The game was so intense from the beginning right through the end. Madrid opens up the score 1-0 in the first half and then near the end of the first half Messi scored to make it 1-1. And then in the 2nd half Barcelona took the lead 2-1 but then Madrid tied it again 2-2. At that moment everyone practically thought that the game will end in a tie. But then at the last second Messi scored the winning goal to make the score 3-2. I remember having goosebumps watching that game.

Talking about football's atmosphere, I think it would be very cool for you to react to Copa 90's mini documentary about the Superclassico (River Plate x Boca Juniors) in Argentina. It's the biggest rivalry here in South America and the guys from Copa 90 really did a great job on explaining the reasons for that. Understanding how rivalries (like Barça vs Madrid in the video) are formed and experienced in football is key to understanding the soul of the sport, it's awesome!
Great video as always, guys! Love from Brazil 🇧🇷💛

At the time Real Madrid were buying all the biggest players in world football, they were nicknamed the GALACTICOS the best players in every position in one team. When Madrid bought Ronaldo, he was the current world best player at the time so it was bound to happen. Barcelona had the best players as well. He hence a match between Madrid and Barcelona was the greatest but however the rest of the teams in the Spanish league are weak, whilst the Premier league pretty much all the teams in the league are very strong

Incorrect. Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, and Villarreal are not "weak" or weaker than most EPL teams. The bottom half of both La Liga and EPL could beat each other on any given day. And the top teams of both leagues have all done well against each other in Europe. You can even see this in UEL performance in the last 10 years, (where some of the "rest" play each other). EPL teams have won 3 times, where as La Liga teams have won it 7 times. Fans of EPL have a habit of looking at football through tunnel vision, often morphing the other leagues into one "shit league" when in fact it's not at all true. If you had said Ligue 1? sure, we all know PSG is just showing up for UCL practice each week. But, La Liga is not the same.

1-If it is a league game you get :
    3 points for the win
    1 point for the tie
    0 points for the loss
2- If it is in a Cup game i.e(Champions league/Copa Del Rey in Spain/FA cup in England etc) there can be no ties in the game. It either is a home and away game( you can tie the first game but if the second is tied you go to extra time and then penalties) or you play the extra time and penalties directly because a winner must be determined.
So in conclusion ties in league games give you 1 point and ties in cup games will go to over time and penalty shootouts because a winner has to be determined beceause only 1 will qualify.
(Added time and overtime are not the same. Added time is the added time of the time wasted in the half regularly its about 3-4 minutes. Can be 1 minute or even 5-6 depends on the game because the clock doesnt stop in football even if the play does).

You're right mate, points win the league. But also in cup competitions which are tournaments, you have to knock other teams out until you win in the final. If these games are a tie, then extra time of 30 mins and penalties will decide if no difference in scoreline after extra 30.
In the league it's 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 if you lose. Then the 'goal difference' (goals scored - goals conceded) will decide it.
Also, you guys should watch some goalkeeper saves I like how you appreciate the defense haha

The point system is used in the league matches. if your team wins, that 3 points gained but if y'all are tied after the game is over, that's 1 point gained for both teams. if it's in other competitions, then its a knockout system so if it's tied at the end, they play some extra minutes and even go to penalty shoot outs to determine who wins.

Some rules about the point-system and cup-system in European club football:
    In the competition:
    3 points for the win.
    1 point for a draw.
And if in the end of the competition, if 2 clubs have the same points, then they look a the goal difference.
Or at the results they played against each other. ( but it depends on wich country, or league, rules are sometimes different )
    In the national cup:
Win the game you go go the other round.
Draw: extra time 30min, if its still a draw then penalty's
Or the play a home and away game. (again it depends in wich country or league)
    Final is 1 game.
    National supercup:
League winners against cup winners holders.
(Spain 2 games, rest in Europe 1 game)
    European cup:
They play a groupstage without 4 teams, so 3x away and 3x home matches.
Best 2 clubs qualify for knock out stage. (KO)
In the knock out stage, 1/8 1/4 1/2 finales. Its home and away games. (who scored the most goals go's the next round)
Draw in both games: extra time in second game, if its still a draw the penalty's.
Final is 1 game, in a neutral city in europe.
    There 3 European cups divisions.
Champions league: the best of the best teams in europe. (nr 1, 2,3 of the top league's, smaller league's have 1 or 2 teams or play KO games to qualify before it al begins in september )
Europa league: the teams under the Champions league teams. (winner qualify's also direct for the new champions league season)
Confederations league: the clubs under Europa league clubs.
European supercup: (first game at the start of every new european season)
The winner from the Champions league plays against the Europa league winner.
1 game in a other country.
Hope this helps you guys how it works.
    Bless

About the point system: in this case we have two teams from spain, they play against each other every year at least twice if not more. They have la liga( which is the championship of spain), during these games you can have a tie score by the end of the 90 minutes. Two halfs of 45 minutes with additional minutes estimated by the ref( in case of lost time and injuries..).
Then you have la Copa Del Rey, which is a cup and you have two games and in case they score the same amount of goals in the two games, they go extra time because you need to have a winner by two games.
You have also the super cup which is usually between the winner of la liga and la copa del rey.
And the champions league games are mixed between points system and face to face phases. That's enough information for the day because i know that's too much for yall to learn at once xD

28:54 he was talking about aggregate scores not necessarily points per se. So yeh winning on aggregate ending on a level score doesn't matter once a particular team have won the last game. For example in a 2 leg game (home/away)..leg 1/2: team A scored 2 and team B scored 1..heading into leg 2/2 the aggregate would be (2) - (1)... so if team A ended leveled with team B say 1-1. it doesn't matter because now it is technically (3)-(1) and team A is declared the winner.
This can also be a case where in the first leg both teams tie the game..there would be the need for a winner in the 2nd leg, if at the end of the regular 90mins + stoppage time there isn't a winner, the game goes to extra time. If still without a winner penalties then take place.

In league-system competitions, the point system is in place, and ties grant 1 point for each side.
In knock-out rounds, you have either home and away games, or one single game. If it is home and away, a tie can take place, but if another team won the other game, then that team advances. If both teams won one game, it can come down to the total number of goals in both matches. Or if both games are tied, it can come down to who scored more visitor goals. But there are times where you can go to OT at the end of the second game if everything is tied, counting both games.
In a single knockout games, someone has to win, so if there is a tie in 90 mins, OT will take place. And if there is still a tie at the end of OT, they go to penalties.
It's kind of complicated at first, especially understanding "away goals", and the way different leagues and tournaments have different rules.
Regarding whether two teams end up tied in a league point system, yes that has happened many times. The tie-breaker depends on that league's rules. In Spain, the tie-breaker is the direct duel between the two teams. For example, in 2007, Real Madrid and Barcelona were tied in points at the end of the season. But in their direct games, Real Madrid won one, and the other one was a tie, so Real Madrid was crowned champion.
In other leagues, if there is a tie, the tie-breaker can be the total difference between goals scored and received throughout the whole season.

Yeah one thing I wish we had in football, is something like the Nba all star games, that would be so entertaining, with all the little mini games or contests before the main game, oh my goodness.

In the league a win is 3 points, a draw(tie) is 1 point and a loss is 0 points. If 2 teams are tied on points at the end of a season a tiebreaker is used, in Spain they use the head to head results of the 2 teams, so how they played against each other. Other leagues use goal difference (goals scored - goals conceded).

In the la liga, if you win you get 3 points, if you draw (2-2) or (0-0) you get 1 point each team and 0 for loss. If two teams have the same points at the end of the season it goes on "goal difference" which that takes account for who wins. The team with the highest goal difference wins. So if Real Madrid had 90 points, Scored 70 goals and had 20 past them then their difference is 50. And that's the basis of who wins if they have same points.

It had the best 2 teams in the world. Even top 3 for a little period. However Premier League was still way more popular and entertaining as there are more competetive games and multiple very big teams.

As far as the ref giving extra time at the end, during those two 45 minutes halves the clock keeps running. They don't stop it like in nba. At the end of each half the referee allocates a few extra minutes called added stoppage time which is basically the time the ball was out of play during the half. Usually the stoppage time is greater at the end of the game. You will see like 3, 4 ,5 even 6 minutes added, the difference between those is because in some games there might be an injury or one of the teams is stalling with putting the ball faster into play, depending on those type of incidents the extra time is added.

yeh in Domestic League games(Prem/La Liga etc) and Champions/Europe Group stage games you get 1 point for a tie/draw. In
But Knockout cups games are decided that day (mostly, I will describe directly below the usual format, but for information on when it is different see the "***Extra detail English Cups" section at the very bottom regarding FA CUP and League Cup) :
Domestic Cups (FA Cup, Copa del Rey etc) you have extra time at a Level scoreline at 90mins (2 extra halves of 15 mins) if still level you have Penalty shootout (5 chosen penalty takers, and after that sudden death through the rest of your team until 1 team s ahead after a round of Penalty's is complete, 1 round = 1 penalty per team). Domestic cups are usually 1 match per Knockout round (like a playoff) the fixtures are drawn at random so you may be home ground or the oppositions home ground , it is what it is, the Final (and sometimes Semi's) are held in a Neutral ground usually the National Stadium (in England''s case the FA cup and League Cup finals are held at Wembley)
The Champions League and Europa League have a group stage which is a mini league, group of 4 teams 6 games per team, home and away with each other team in the group 3pts =win, 1pt Draw/tie 0=Loss, top 2 from each group through too Knockout stage (3rd place teams go into Europe League Knockout and play Europa League Group stage winners/runners up)
Knock out Stage: 3 Knock out stages which are 2 legs (meaning 2x 90 minute matches, 1 at each teams Home ground)
If at the end of the 2nd leg the teams are still level they go to Extra Time (2x15 mins halves) and then a penalty shootout (as above)
Then a Final which is a one off game at a predetermined venue (known at the start of the season)
The Final is 90mins of football, 2 x15 mins halves if still level, and then Penalty Shootout (as above)
The Final's Venue (Europa League and Champions League)
Basically one of the great Football stadiums in Europe, occasionally a team gets to the Final that happens to be held at their Home ground, this is very rare though Bayen Munich had this in the last few years but were beaten by Chelsea in the Champions League final on Bayern's own ground
International Football Tournaments (World Cup, European Championship, AFCON, Copa America, etc)
These are a bit like the Champions League Group stage, which is a mini league, the Knockout stages (usually 4 or 5 Knockout rounds), but slight differences. The Competition is held in a different country each time (bit like the Olympics, they have a host country), Sometimes its 2 nations joint hosting. The Stadiums are the best Football Stadiums in the Country(s), so only the host nations are in Home grounds, the rest are technically "away".
In the Group Stages 4 teams, only play each other once this time so there are 3 games in a group stage each team has to play (3 pts win and 1 pt draw/tie 0 pt loss)
Then (usually) the top 2 from each group through to Knock Out stages. Then its 1 off games winner progresses to the net round.
The Knock out in International games is like Domestic cups (FA Cup) single 90 mins games , 2 x15 mins Halves if still level, then Penalty Shootout if still level.
    * Extra detail about when things are not as above International
There are exceptions to this in similar competitions around the world, and the exceptions are usually down to pool size meaning how many teams are involved. Sometimes in Group stages you have top teams go through and only the 4 highest 2nd place teams (league stats) this happens in competitions with smaller number of teams than 32 (so Oceanic continental competition is probably like this, so countries like Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Island nations.. Papua New Guinea etc etc). Th European Championship used to be like this but they increased the number of nations taking part
    ***Extra detail English Cups
The League Cup in England is different to most cup competitions in that its single game Knock out stages, which is normal but the Semi Finals are for some reason 2 legs, a bit like Champions league Knock out stages, but they are talking about changing that, making it 1 leg each stage of the Knock out, because the Final,it goes back to 1 leg
Also Th FA Cup and the League Cup (and other domestic cups around the world) have Replays for tied games in early rounds.
If the first match is tied, then a replay happens. The first game is by draw chosen to be Home for a Team, if they draw that game it will be replayed a week or so later at the other teams home ground. This only happens in early rounds and only on the first game,if the replay is tied, it goes to Extra Time (2 x15 min halves if tied) and then Penalty shootout if still Draw/tie.
