      There's a lot of products that claim to be designed by "the community" or something nowadays, and maybe it's true but it doesn't really seem to affect what the end product is.

      @Ethan Stam possible, but they'd have to go through more effort and the truth will always come out. People could just buy the actual product from the store and review them too, so it's really hard to say. Plus if you are caught lying as a company it's hard to build that rep back up. So definitely risky to do that, or they shouldn't send one at all and fake the marketing.

      @@nouahlevi Makeup community has done this. A company worked with a very prominent TH-camr and sent her a 'good' product for her to test and promote. The mass produced ones for the public turned out to be of a much lesser quality. There was a time delay but the public eventually caught on, but the company still made bank by that time. Even duped the TH-camr whose name was attached to it. And it wasn't enough for them to go under. Still think they are around. In this specific case, working with the forum, there is no way they'd get away with this. This would also be nice to see what sort of leather your money gets you and directly compare different cuts that are not just tanned differently, but tanned at different price points. A video directly looking at this and the supply process in general would be amazing. Thank you for all the great videos!

  • @radry100

    You didn't analyze the leather used. Is it full grain like they claimed? Are all parts the same leather? How thick is it... Also, are you gonna cut the v2 in half too? The price is much higher than the v1 originally was.

    • @RoseAnvil
      @RoseAnvil  4 ปีที่แล้ว +205

      Oops I must have accidentally cut that out. It is a full grain calf skin. It’s basically the same thickness as all of the rest of the white sneakers. I’m not sure if I’m going to do the V2, it kind of depends on how this video does and if people want to see it.

      @Wsherwoodking 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RoseAnvil So it's the same thickness, has the blue hue. Are we really sure it's veg tan beyond what they have claimed? Why would chromium salts be added if it was regular veg tan? As you say in the video, they should definitely do a proper full veg tan sneaker and I'm glad you haven't just taken their word for it 100%. I don't think anyone is delusional enough to think it would sit at the same price point as chrome tan but it would be interesting to see how much more as it is only then imo that you far exceed the other white sneaker brands (common projects, axel arigato and so on..)

    • @Roh2274
      @Roh2274 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Will Sherwood-King the white calf has some chromium salts added to it so it achieves the brilliant white colour. I’ll copy and paste the answer to Rose here. So the white calf is a vegetable tanned leather but some chromium salts are added early (i think i understood this right) in the process. However the process is primarily veg tan as the core (again pardon my ignorance) is tanned by the longer veg tan process so much so the skin is marketed as veg tan.
      I think the term you used might be right but they explained it as exactly or especially about this colour. It is definitely not a chrome tanned skin.
      Most of the other colours in calf are full veg tan. We don't use white in our handwelted collection. The Anticato is painted crust aside from anticato tan which is painted tan. We have posted pics of the open shoe in crust on the forum.

    Having watched this video I can’t help thinking that the product wanted by the Styleforum already exists. They are handmade in England by Crown Northampton at a price not much more than you’d pay for Archibald London. The Crown’s shoes come in three basic models, two of which can be made as high tops, and in standard and wide fittings. They have a range of high quality leathers, including Horween Chromexcel, and a range of soles. Each pair is made to order in their Northampton workshop. They have been reviewed on The Kavalier TH-cam channel. Personally I’d rather order the Crowns over the Archibalds. I’d really like to see a tear-down video to see how they compare to the other white sneakers you’ve reviewed.

    I looked up to see what kind of leather is chrome tanned, then, re-tanned using the veg tan process, Here’s what I found on wiki:
    “Latigo leather is cowhide leather that is combination tanned. First it is chrome tanned, then it is vegetable tanned. Before modern combination tanning, latigo had been combination tanned with alum and gambier. Latigo is usually infused with oils and waxes. ... They are named for the latigo leather used to create them.”
    I guess you CAN market it as “veg tan” if it spends more time in the veg tan process but they probably should have called it “látigo”

  • @Stevieboy7
    @Stevieboy7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Creases are part and parcel of working with vegtan as well, it doesn't have the softness or bounceback as chrometan. This is the problem with folks just labelling and thinking "oh vegtan is better than chrometan in everyway". It's so terribly incorrect. The reality is that for what you want in a sneaker, chrometan is the perfect leather.

      Exactly.

    • @alanc6468
      @alanc6468 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Half true, you can't say there's a perfect leather. Both can be made into sneakers like the colours other than white in this case. The leather upper is so thin that veg tan or chrome tan will work. The main difference is the cost of time to tan, patina and colouring options. Chrome tan can be vibrantly coloured but veg tan will be more difficult to colour and have a "natural looking" patina. The SF community couldn't care less about the method of tanning, only on how well the shoes are made.
      EDIT: Puncture resistance has mainly been solved with leather counters and steel toes. Waterproofing has been solved with varieties of hydrophobic compounds. *The method of tanning does not matter apart from the appearance you want in a pair of sneakers. The level of craftsmanship matters more.* The same cannot be said for boots.
      I have pairs of Vibergs and Edward Greens (chrome and veg) and it really doesn't matter at all if it's chrome, or veg tan but how it's been crafted instead.

    even though that they are handmade sneaker, they can't avoid the key aspect of making shoes which is the percentage of usage for a piece of leather and on top of that white leather it is the most difficult color to make. let say you got a big piece of leather and if you are insisting that only the best part / firm area / zero defects to be make into shoes, you will throw away at least 30-40% of leather. even the high-end tanneries like annonay france ( own by hermes) cant produce a batch leather that could guaranteed 90% usage so it is best to educate consumer on the industrial quality grading standard.

    I occasionally view your post however I find it to fragmented, coming from the sneaker community there are fans of particular silhouette with various upgrades in construction 👷‍♂️ eg:- Nike Dunks - lux low 🔥- deconstructed low✨- elite low🌟- then premium collaboration & signature line, not just GR release. Neat information 👍!

    I have a sneaker similar to this one (including the way it wrinkles), and the manufacturer advertises it as "napa confort" leather tanned without any chrome. The manufacturer doesn't specifically say that it is veg tanned. This leather is tanned in Germany (I live in Brazil) and is finished and dyed (or painted) in Brazil. I didn't cut it to see if it has any blue tints…
    Now a doubt: as there is no white dye, white leather sneakers are painted and not dyed. Doesn't this make it irrelevant in terms of quality whether leather is chrome or veg tanned?
    White ink looks whiter when adding a dash of blue ink, for example.

    Honestly I'm just diving into the plain white sneaker game. I've been a dr marten wearer for 5 years and finally bought a pair of nike air max & alongside with some Adidas superstar. Damn I wish I came across this page earlier, these look beautiful, common projects were on my hit list but you've just sold me these, will be ordering and DEC 15 can't come quick enough. Thanks for the information & class TH-cam channel

    I bought a fairly high-end lambskin jacket in Italy and the sales rep said some property of the leather was "because we use so little chromium in the tanning". So I wonder if some kind of combination tanning is common there.

    Check out the Italic cadence leather sneaker. They are 75 bucks at cost with the annual 100 dollar membership and 150 for non members. They should be restocked in August. Love the channel too btw! As an avid sneaker owner and wearer it's very interesting to see all these different sneakers be torn apart and compared.
    At some point too try getting Gucci ace sneakers and saint Laurent SL-01 or Andy moon. Being more expensive I understand if it takes some time to get to those. Thanks again!

    I'm sure they get into this detail in the forum-- but i'd say they made the wrong visual design choice by moving the cross stich and heightening the toe box vertically to 'expand' the toe box-- rather than properly reworking the entire proportions of the shoe.
    Higher end dress shoes are able to maintain sleek lasts while providing ample room for even EE width because they take a holistic approach to last design rather than treat tweaks like slider customization to fit specific needs.

  • @yapolloable

    wow, another great video. Kinda wish that the shoe didn't have fabric layers in between the upper, it'd delay the breaking in process as i've got wide feet. Madly anticipating the resole video!

    1. They should have went with more cushion inside.
    2. They could be getting tricked by the factory.
    3. The eyelets need to be steel reinforced.

    If it's veg tan leather, the creases are normal. Don't demand a particular material when you don't like the way it naturally ages. All leather naturally creases but they last a long time.

    Curious why no mention of the sole compound and rand tape. Rubber type and manufacturer should be disclosed. Is it vulcanized or molded? I would evaluate wet / dry traction on multi surfaces and wear characteristics. Grip and sole flexibility are my top priority after a perfect fit is established. After sufficient sidewalk abrasion, my first impression might be rainy day grip of polished market floors. I do not object to rubber chirp. I appreciate your thoughts.

    Another good teardown and very informative as well.
    They did not mention how many percent of the chrome tanned versus the vegetable tanned process.
    Since it creases easily so does it means that there was more chrome tanned process involved?
    It would be interesting to know how these two tanning process were done on the same hide.
