Using cordovan is absolutely insane. Another important thing is how soft it is for its durability, as well as its slickness. It doesn't crease or bunch, and I do archery. The top finger tabs (something to protect your fingers when you hold the string) are all from cordovan leather, and for one of them, which is probably about 2 inches of leather and some metal fixtures, it will run you about £90. A shoe made from just one piece is absolutely ridiculous, and considering the prices of high end shoes, that price makes complete sense. Completely out of my price range but wow. Anyone that can afford it will 100% not be disappointed by that leather quality, and it'll be incredibly durable. For reference, pros shoot thousands of arrows off one tab, which is a tiny contact surface, consistently holding back 40lbs, to release as gently as possible, meaning that that string will be constantly rubbing and wearing that leather. This is known as one of the highest quality leathers for a good reason.
A shell cordovan of about 2.6 square feet will cost about 200 euro (Maryam) For 2 whole cut shoes you need two of them. That still leaves a price tag of 500 euro for the production of very simple and not very pretty sneakers. Using a rediculously over the top material to cover up the rediculously over the top price for the production of them. O, and from the left over scraps alone a bunch of archery finger tabs can be made. A far better use where material properties meet actual needs.

Fascinating video. If only we had a Rose Anvil for all of the other things that matter on a day to day level. Trousers, socks, glasses and pocket knives. Motorcycles and kitchen bins. Breeds of tropical fish and vacuum cleaners..
I love Crown Northhampton's attention to detail. Like the laces. They lace using the over under method and the left shoe is always perfectly mirrored to the right shoe. For example, when the laces cross, the right shoe has the right lace overlap the left lace. The left shoe is reversed, creating a mirror effect. It's such a tiny detail, but satisfies my OCD.
Yes you can do it yourself, but the fact the company pays attention to this detail makes you think about the attention to detail and care they spend building the rest of the shoes. I for one like it!
I met Chris at the Crown N.H. factory in May (2023), and I've never been more impressed by any shoe company or shoe factory than Crown Northampton. It truly was both an inspirational and unforgettable experience. P.S. He mentioned they were making these shoes for the Rose A. channel so I was glad to see this video: thank you!
Do I need these? No. Would I feel odd wearing them? Yes. Do they fit my extremely casual dress style? No. Would I be too afraid to to wear them? Yes. But I value excellence and I want them so damn much!
I got a pair of IC Berlin glasses for a little over $1000. They are screwless and made of surgical steel. Almost six years later, they look exactly like the day I bought them. Twice they have come apart and I just clicked them back into place effortlessly. These shoes may be next on my list. When you wear things, you add value to them.
I have 2 pairs of Crown sneakers, the Abington hi tops in black & white toe cap, and the upton wholecut white/white. They're awesome! For the quality and attention to detail its hard to match for the price. Dress them up or down they go with almost everything, I've worn the hi tops with casual suits. A minor compliant, the upton's came with ridiculously short laces that I needed to replace - I have a high arch feet and tend to bulge out of the top of shoes, probably should have gone with the "wide" fitting. I also love knowing that when the soles wear out, I can send them back to be replaced.
Made in the UK, not Europe. Technically it’s is, but nobody in the UK will say that. The UK isn’t a Socialist dump where borders do not exist and you are losing you culture and countries.
R.M. Williams boots use one piece of leather on their boots! Australian born and made, hope to see a pair on here one day! You’ll be impressed with Aussie handmade boots!
Honestly, crown is the only high end sneaker maker for me, since others do not even have the option for wider feet. Very happy owner of 2 pairs from them.
Curious about the width, but also the toe curvature. I’ve been rehabbing my toes and I’m wondering about the width of the toe box in the wider sizes. If you can share anything, much obliged.

Well, I started this video not expecting my mind would be blown at what goes into these shoes. Ended the video with my mind blown at what goes into these shoes. Incredible stuff.
I grew up skateboarding, so quality footwear was really skewed in the big scheme of leathers. Once I started needing dress shoes and boots, I quickly realized the importance of full grain leather. Seeing this cut open hurt! What an absolute beauty of a midtop sneaker. Even seeing a full grain skate shoe for $120-$150 is too expensive for most. Imagine these being an after skate or full on go-to formal sneaker. $910 isn’t so crazy when low quality, plastic-infused top grain leather SB Dunks and Jordan 1s go for hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Be interested in a Diemme Roccia Vet, they stopped using Vibram soles for Eurosoles. Looks like a traditional alpine walking boot but its a fashion shoe really. Made in Italy.
I enjoy and appreciate your honesty. Your channel is probably the only channel where the entire shoe gets dissected; that allows us to understand better the anatomy and quality we should look for.
The way your shirt folds, it often looks like it says "Lucky Lice Pizza." Delicious! Seriously, I dig your channel a lot! Thanks for the fun and information!
When you said “no creasing” I had to wonder - what would it be like to recreate a pair of Nike AJ1s or AF1s using these same level of materials and methods? A Rose Anvil challenge, perhaps?
Would the cork eventually break apart and fall into where it spans the gaps of the rubber sole? Seems like it would cause stress points where the cork touches the rubber vs. the cavities.
As a Nike fanboy, I still love this channel. That was an absolutely fascinating video. Thank you. I have to be honest, I don’t like the look of the shoe, but appreciate the workmanship.
I have shoes that are reminescent of these from a strange German shoe company called Trippen. They are not seamless but the seams are turned outwards and are placed very well in pretty "novel" places. They really have formed themselves instead of creasing at all. It's only one layer of leather, nothing inside at all. I have had them for several years and I love them. They show no signs of wear except the original shoelaces just gave up. I think they cost me $130 at an outlet so $1000 for a pair of shoes feels pretty extreme, even if it's a very good pair.
I'm struggling to justify that much on shoes let alone dream about cutting them open 😂 But it is informative and educational seeing exactly what they're made out of and where (if any) corners have been cut so you get a better idea on how it will fare in the long run
If you need a good dress sneaker for work that will last years. It's definitely justified. Shoes are important for a lot of reasons. Such as, being perceived properly, foot health, back health, general comfort, etc. It's much more justifiable to spend big money on shoes opposed to something like a shirt.

The Brits make such cool shoes. I was measured for and bought a pair of cowboy boots from Conker Shoes in Devon in 1997. It took about five weeks to receive them in Oklahoma USA. They still look beautiful and have conformed to my feet flawlessly. Being able to choose the leather type and colors, and combination of sole materials was my best footwear buying experience ever.

Definitely something I will consider now next time I need to buy a more formal type of shoe. Cheers for the detailed info too. Best sneaker videos on TH-cam by far

I never regretted a second I had bought them all. I do recommend them. Cheers!
Hey @RoseAnvil, you mention how the shell cordovan will not crease, it just rolls... how bad do you think the creases would get in the Chromexcel versions? Do you think the fit and feel would be much different? Thanks!!!
I think $910 is a fair price, given the quality of the materials, the difficulty of making, and the provenance. I'd pay for it, but in this case, it's not a style I like.
Honestly I can't get myself to like the design, no matter how much I look at them. I think they're weird looking, too shiny and smooth, the tongue goes down too low and there's no interesting seams or details to make them look like a sneaker at all. Also the laces are so close together. I appreciate the workmanship but it's a no for me 🙈
@@onixtheoneI argee with everything you say except when you say you can get quality for $90. You can’t get a shoe to compare in quality to this one for $90 man
@@Lexidezi225the point is why do you want next level quality on sneakers? Sneakers are meant to be casual comfortable shoes that go with more relaxed outfits. Invest that money on high end dress shoes or boots - footwear where the supreme quality is actually functional.
Hi! It would be great if you do a cut review of some Diadora Heritage sneakers, specially the ones made in Portugal (Diadora Basket Low or B.560). I'm not a leather expert but I own MANY leather sneakers and I'd say the quality of the Diadora ones are the best you can find in regular, reasonably priced sneakers by far.
@@somerandomperson8282 What is the target market for something like this? You gotta be: 1. A leather nerd who appreciates the fine craftsmanship and materials 2. Someone who is rich enough to afford these. 3. Someone who wants to buy brown leather sneakers instead of a nice pair of brown leather boots. Like what kind of outfits do these work with? And why not use boots or dress shoes with those outfits instead of shiny brown leather "sneakers"?
@@salvadorHombre you are of correct... you have to be someone who appreciates and can afford them; that is just obvious. Nahh! Those shoes don't even scrape the bottom of the *quality* that are Yeezy shoes. Because Kanye is never wrong and he said they were the best shoes ever. Right guys?
I’d urge you at this point to look into A1923 (A. Diciannoveventitre), Boris Bidjan Saberi, and perhaps Nihomano! All three are definitely what I’d call artisanal and you’ll find various leathers including of course horse and sometimes kangaroo. Pretty sure all these gonna be hand lasted and super impressive but also no price points under $1000
There are now a bunch of direct-to-consumer leather shoes and boots manufacturers in India that are absolutely outstanding in terms of style, construction and materials .... at literally 20% of the cost of the UK / US. Would be really interesting to benchmark those to these global brands.
@RoseAnvil would you be interested in pulling apart some Lowa hiking boots? The pair I owned started losing the sole and I got a new pair so I don't really know what to do with the old pair... Maybe cutting them in half and representing some german boots on your channel would be a good last purpose for them?
I have 2 problems with them and I know you can’t disagree because they’re gripes you usually bring up. The foam and the cork. Foam has no place in a $910 shoe. The foam will wear out of a few months and serves no purpose other than initial comfort. The cork, while being a relatively decent addition to the average shoe is still inferior to another piece of leather in its place. After significant wear the cork is pushed around and gaps are made making them less comfortable and not as long term of an option. It’s objectively a great shoe but it’s not as good as it could be.
I agree with you on the foam my dude, but maybe you should reevaluate cork. It is lighter than leather, antimicrobial, and the only natural solid which when compressed on one side, does not increase in volume on the other. When a sole is thicc like this sneaker ya gotta slap some cork in there. A full leather insole is only ever comfy on hardbottom shoes in my opinion 😊. I agree with your point though, these sneakers shouldn't've did that foam bit.
As a cobbler, I agree with your points that other superior meterials could be used instead, especially the foam and how true, cork can eventually break up to a point where it causes discomfort.
I have mixed feelings about cork. On a shoe, rather than a boot, I really prefer a lighter material than leather. However, you are correct that in terms of wear, cork will not last as long and is inferior to leather. I believe the foam is removable.
Great seeing something different and getting to appreciate the amazing quality and story. In terms of other sneakers it would be nice to see on this channel are diadora made in Italy, n9000 for example, to see how much better the leather quality is when compared to Nike, new balance etc.
Having NB made in UK and Diadora made in Italia as well as famous Northampton dress shoes, I can tell the european sneakers are well above their asian cousins. Both in material and craftmanship. The QC is better too, so is the wearing experience. However, they are not comparable to the finest dress shoes.
I disagree with it being the perfect sneaker, because while it might get leatherheads crazy, I'm not sure it's winning any style points outside of that crowd.
I think it looks awesome, and I'm neither a 'leatherhead' or a sneaker fanatic. And lets be real: sneaker fanatics are actually brain damaged. The stuff they like is comically terrible.
Will you make a thorough comparison between Archibald and Crown Northampton? Both these companies seem to be high quality shoes makers (and leather workers) but it is a bit difficult to choose between the 2 when it comes to more expensive priced shoes. Thanks!
While the quality is top notch, the aesthetics aren't up to par. They're kind of ugly. Work on the silhouette and lines of the shoe a bit more. Those things look like marching band shoes mixed with an old church shoe. So they're still not a perfect shoe. Appeal is a big component of footwear too. They can be improved upon.
Damn this shoe is legitimately a work of art.. such a precise and timeless look that clearly only a master craftsmen could assemble. Truly the perfect shoe
Maybe, but when you can get a pair of plastic Nikes for $200 it doesn’t seem as insane. I mean I’d never buy them, but if I were independently wealthy I might

About a year later, they are coming close to another resole - the soles are quite soft but this must be one reason they are so incredibly comfortable. Many years ago I was fortunate to get a tour of the Horween factory and talk about and view the process they use. I was gifted some cutoffs of some of the leather that did not make the cut. I think they where nice to me since I had my car stolen the night before and had to take several buses to make it there or maybe my sincere interest in leather.
I mean you can do this yourself
@@_bats_are you crazy? My father was killed relacing his shoes. Not to be trifled with.
@@Matthew-tr6io LMAO! I mean, sorry for your loss..
Yes you can do it yourself, but the fact the company pays attention to this detail makes you think about the attention to detail and care they spend building the rest of the shoes. I for one like it!
@@hellokenHuh? Cheap sneakers are laced like this all the time? What are you talking about?
These make me so happy. Watching basically perfectly made products be dissected and just seeing the maximum performance is awesome
Sounds like a real exaggeration. What about it was an "unforgettable and inspirational experience"?
Do I need these? No. Would I feel odd wearing them? Yes. Do they fit my extremely casual dress style? No. Would I be too afraid to to wear them? Yes. But I value excellence and I want them so damn much!
Highly relevant thoughts.
I feel exactly the same as this.
This is a very good introduction into high-quality shoes for me. I may even end up with a pair....or something like them. 👍🏾
Insanely beautiful shoes! I am glad that quality footwear is still made in Europe too.
I’ve never been sad to see you cut a pair of shoes or boots. That is until these. So beautiful.
The quality craftsmanship and the fact that it's made in Europe adds so much to the price!
Why does manufacturing in Europe change the price?
Made in the UK, not Europe. Technically it’s is, but nobody in the UK will say that. The UK isn’t a Socialist dump where borders do not exist and you are losing you culture and countries.
@SPNKr16 where is England?
What continent?
I would be interested to see a review of the Footjoy premier series golf shoes.
That’s heartbreaking to watch you cut them in half but it’s great to see the craftsmanship and everything that goes into making these trainers
Nice, which ones do you have?
Curious about the width, but also the toe curvature. I’ve been rehabbing my toes and I’m wondering about the width of the toe box in the wider sizes. If you can share anything, much obliged.
The qualities of Quality are uncompromising workmanship, superior materials, stellar design, and flawless function. it is forever a joy when the striving kisses perfection.
They are literally the One Piece of sneakers! I would say for everything that goes into the shoe, it’s a fair price. Good to see actual quality made shoes in the UK is still happening!
Though only a rarefied few can afford such highly crafted shoes, they are not a boondoggle to me. Taking craftsmanship and design to extremes must yield knowledge and techniques that make cheaper and more common items better. It's the reason for concept cars and insane goals like travelling to the moon and beyond.
I agree that this might have been the most painful to watch get cut. After that passionate explanation of the shoe how could it not be.
I want to see you touring tanneries seong their processes and shoe factories. You chatting to one of the skilled artisans about rolling those french seams.
would you be interested in cutting a pair of Visvim sneakers? I have a pair of Foley Folks that don't fit me. They are built to be resoled, supposedly hand made, supposedly top tier leather, etc. More than happy to donate to the site for a fun video of a brand you've never featured!

These have the vibe of those really ugly KD6 lifestyle shoes.
It would be interesting to compare these to designer sneakers like LV and such, I have feeling which will come out country mile ahead!
Crazy people pay thousands for sh!t quality shoes everyday in America. This one for a thousand sounds worth it.
Love this type of Heritage and superior craftsmanship brand. It’s way beyond my pocket but love to see quality brands still in existence.

I felt pain tear through my very soul as you cut those in half. Such beautiful shoes! Also wonderful job on your presentation about the company’s history; can you give us some details on how you’re making that?
As a sneakerhead this is not a type of shoe I had considered before. After watching the first video on these shoes I'm interested. Although expensive, you get a really good quality product and I could see a shoe like this literally lasting me a lifetime. Definitely something I will consider now next time I need to buy a more formal type of shoe. Cheers for the detailed info too. Best sneaker videos on TH-cam by far
Hey man! These are that expensive because made of Horween Shell Cordovan. I have 2 pairs of Crown Northampton sneakers made of different leathers:
- Crown Northampton Upton Wholecut - Horween green chromexcel
- Crown Northampton Upton Wholecut Essex - Horween natural Essex
Both are muuuuch cheaper than shell but look same nice and feel veeery comfy.
Thanks!!!
The La Sportiva TX4 R are hiking sneakers intended for easy resoling! People say they're really durable would be interested to hear you take!
I think $910 is a fair price, given the quality of the materials, the difficulty of making, and the provenance. I'd pay for it, but in this case, it's not a style I like.
I can buy a similar style for good quality for about 90 bucks from Beckett Simonon and spend the rest on a great pair or pairs of boots

It hurts the soul to watch Rose Anvil and ProjectFarm destroy nice things. Brings a single tear to my eye.
I have some Brunello Cucinelli sneakers that seem similar, but I’d love to see a dissection of a pair!

If you are thinking about how many pairs of cheap sneakers you can get for the price of these then you are definitely not the target market.
@@somerandomperson8282
What is the target market for something like this?
You gotta be:
1. A leather nerd who appreciates the fine craftsmanship and materials
I own leather boots and I own Crown Northampton Harlestone shell sneakers and my sneakers get far more wear than my boots due to their far higher comfort levels. They basically feel like slippers on the feet and I still get regular compliments on them at work.

It’s objectively a great shoe but it’s not as good as it could be.
third problem: it's ugly.
@@Bawnana The foam is just in the removable insole. If that starts wearing out, you can just get new ones. Takes zero work.
