I'm a former Amazon customer service rep...and we (well...amazon) 100% can afford to send out complete replacements for almost whatever (although the more costly items needed higher authority approval).
People go crazy happy when you say you'll replace a lost or broken item, for obvious reasons and to the point where there is also a separate department for "concession abusers" who try to gain the system.
There must be hundreds of thousands of stories like the playstation 4 one...but they've been forgotten, or never brought to light in the first place. :)

For me, the things that define good customer service are
    1. Deep knowledge of products, enough to answer any question.
    2. Patience to both answer all questions the customer asks and also if they're a bit belligerent.
    3. Being nice and polite, as well as genuine understanding/concern for any issue customer has.

While working at a car rental company, I had a customer who reserved an SUV for his family trip and when they arrived they had way too much luggage and the client also only drives domestic vehicles no imports, so I took him and his family to their hotel while we collected an Escalade for his trip from another location and delivered it to his hotel, he was so happy that we did that for him that he told his company to rent exclusively from us only. Little details like that can make a big difference.

Great story! Customer service really makes a difference. The executive chef at Disneyland who went above and beyond for the family, especially for the autistic son, is truly inspiring. The story about Lego is also heartwarming. It shows that even a small act of kindness can have a big impact on someone's life. Keep sharing these stories, it's important to spread positivity and show the impact of good customer service.

I always make sure I contact management or corporate office when I get someone who goes above & beyond. I used to work in customer service for years & CSM... it's so much better to go the extra mile. It makes you feel good, the customer feel good & I was lucky to be loved by the big bosses so I was allowed to have the head store management decision making & codes to make whatever happened, happen. I love it & miss it. Customer service is key to success, period!
I had to stop working for a while & would like to be able to do customer service from home, but not sure what company to go through. Amazon is odd with theirs, and I'm not bilingual. If anyone has anything (no get-rich-quick pyramid scheme businesses) or knows of ideas of companies to look into, I'd greatly appreciate it. I miss having a purpose.
It always lifted my spirits to work with people, making things right & then them coming back, wanting to only speak to me. I had two events where people wanted me to walk with them & help them shop, offering to pay extra for me to do it. But, it was not allowed ☹️ although, it was quite the compliment! In a more men's world large store, and they were asking for me, a female, by name. Any ideas are welcome. Thank you in advance 😊

    These are excellent examples.
Now and then I will work a booth at a local trade show. There is a MASSIVE difference in customer retention between the vendors who pinch every penny and the ones who go out of their way to help customers. I may forget someone who doesn't give me a deal, but I sure won't come back to a person who both inflates their prices and won't haggle on them. I will ALWAYS come back to a person who is helpful and gives me a deal without me even asking. I do the same, and my customers love me.

It's good to see people taking their 'job' and making it a profession. 'I just carry bags to peoples' rooms' - learn more languages, learn about where you work and live and interact with your customers offering tips, places to go or not go, traffic, events, etc. 'I work on a production line' - learn about the machine, work in different parts of the line and learn more - can you do it better without eliminating workers?

I worked in retail management for 3 years. 1 employer sold car audio along with other technologies. Visiting 1 store I was asked if I was headed west to a remote store. I asked why & was told 35 car DVD / CD players needed to be sent there as customers were waiting for them. I collected the boxes & drove 2 hours to get to the store.
I was greeted with cheers & claps as I walked in with these boxes stacked up high. The thanks I received from the staff & manager was only further supported by the customers handing over cash & cards. The Manager was shocked I would go this far to support the customers but those customers paid my salary.

Patrick, whilst you were going through your list of companies, I was thinking of Amazon as a positive and lo and behold, there it is as your no.9. I won't get into it but I have had nothing but good experiences with them anytime something goes sideways. I don't reside on your continent but it does not mean that I can't relate to everything you said. I believe it is the inherent nature of a person to naturally be a good employee or a bad employee and the reverse side of that coin is a good employer and a bad employer. I always find it necessary to tell you what a natural, wonderful speaker you are.
